Pretty much. Or the ones who want a "rescue dog" free because they "can't afford the re-homing fees"....I know some places charge fairly large re-homing fees but most of them are more than willing to lay out THEIR costs if asked....and although I hate the "if you can't afford the rehoming fee how are you going to afford the dog" there IS some truth to it.

The shelter I sometimes volunteer at does this. Whenever you adopt a dog, along with the adoption papers you get a list of everything your money goes towards so you can see that not a penny of it goes to a person, it's all for the dogs and cats. They frequently run specials as well. One month the adoption fee's were $5 + $1 per pound, they had about 40 smaller dogs and tons of cats they were wanting to find homes for and it worked, by the end of the promotion almost all of the smaller dogs had found homes, most of the cats and even some of the bigger ones. Sometimes they also do a promo where dogs that have been there for more than 6 months are only requiring a $30 adoption fee. Usually it is between $50-$100 for cats and between $75-$250 for dogs.

Yah, I gripe about my local shelter, but their rehoming fee doesn't even cover the cost of a spay for anything larger than a medium sized puppy, and they DO run specials regularly (they had a 12 Toms of Christmas special all December for their cats, $12 to rehome any cat who'd been there more than 6 months).

I used to hate when I worked at the shelter and people were outraged at the adoption fees and expected us to just give them the animals. Dude you're paying anywhere from 90-225 for a fixed, vaccinated, felv/fiv/heart worm tested animal. That's a steal!

Pretty much! Heck, I paid more than that for Arty's neuter, and he's not a big dog!

Hey you fell asleep on us last night!

Shhhh. I tried to join in on the fun in chat but it didn't work for me. And I was too lazy to get my computer. :p

I completely agree with adoption fees to help recover some of the cost of the animals the rescue or shelter take in. 9 times out of 10 the fee doesn't cover the entire cost of that one animal's care & medical needs. What I don't understand or agree with is the handful of rescues who maybe have less than 10 dogs in their program & are asking for a $850 adoption fee for an 8 month old healthy purebred dog that was an owner surrender. IMO that is selling the dog. I did stumble across that situation many years ago when I was looking for a small dog. Purebred yorkie that was probably from a puppy mill & the so called rescue group it was with was more than just trying to help recover cost. I love that there are rescue groups that take in so many animals every year & their #1 priority is finding homes for unwanted animals, not seeking profits. If that makes sense.

The pedicures help but for some reason my heels crack all the time. I started smothering them with Neosporin, put socks on then go to sleep. It has helped but as the day goes by they dry out again & start cracking.

I've also read that Epsom salt helps, which I have some but it doesn't last as long as the Neosporin.

Try bag balm

The worst times were when we had adoption fee waived days and everyone and their mother would come in. So many classy people! Then they were appalled that there was an application and it wasn't first come first serve, it was the best home for the animals.

Oh yes, those days sure are interesting. Especially when the people get turned down. Most shelters will lower their fees, not their standards and it kills me when people fail to realize this.
