Smart family I'm sure you know your stuff and have been around this breed alot longer than I have. I was simply asking and wondering if anybody else has experienced these patterns...they only time I have heard such a thing was from a corso breeder who has been doing this for 10 years and has ha 100% success with every litter. So how can I not believe her. Her pets are her family and they do this for the joy, she is not trying to sell anybody here.
I actually don't know much about the breed but I am learning as my next dog will be a corso a couple years down the road. I'm not trying to argue with you dude, I've just never heard that rationale.

But not everybody's goal when choosing a large breed dog is to watch it grow to 200lbs. Especially for the fact the Corso is the smaller of the mastiffs if not smallest...this is not my reasoning for keeping the tail it's just my personal preference. I want my dogs tail to wag and slap me in the legs when I walk in the door...I want him all natural except for the dew claws removed...his dad is 140, he's goona be big regardless. You sound like what you are saying is that the breed is not big enough and we should share our secrets on how to influence and achieve maximum Growth...
I didnt think this notion was that out of this world...unwanted stress on a body can easily stunt growth as we see it with young
teenagers weightlifting before their growth plates are closed...I wouldn't start to train my dog to pull weight until he is fully developed. If the body needs to use it's resources to repair then muscle it can't possibly give the bones enough nutrients to grow at their normal rate. Same deal with cropping a tail and the healing process....and we're not talking about exponential difference here either, maybe a couple pounds during the time his tail would normally be banded.[/QUOTE

1) remove the dewclaws= already not natural 2) the tail is not a muscle

You won't be loving that tail so much when it starts whipping around stuff (besides your leg, which will only cause prob bruises) and breaking everything it comes in contact with :)

A dog's tail is actually not made of cartilage, but of bone. It consists of the extension of the caudal vertebrae. As humans, we do not have that extension, and in place have a coccyx. Because a dog's tail is made of bone, it is susceptible to the same injuries as other bones.

Well no one told my last male puppy that who stands right around 27 inches (can't tell you the weight as I haven't put him on a scale in a while) or my rotties (both too big for standard) at 28 inches and 29 inches. I can tell you that dew claws are no different as the tails when done (especially if banding at home with the mom right there), especially if front and back are done. Neither are fun, generally for the breeder as the dogs don't seem to notice later.

Don't get me wrong I don't think anyone should crop or dock if they don't want to but I also don't want info that isn't 100% accurate out there. We are fighting a hard battle where we are at the moment to keep it a right of the owner to chose :(

I do have a question though, you got pick puppy to show/breed or a pet?

Guys I'm not trying to jump into a forum and become te bad guy. I respectfully contribute to many forums and I'm not looking for pointless arguments. I'm telling you what a wonderfully loving breeder told me. The women has litter upon litters living in house with her and her family spending lots of time with them...The mother, her daughter and her daughters boyfriend all were very surprised when I told them I want to keep the tail...they said they have never had a request to keep the tail on a males, only females. They dont have picture evidence of growth patterns. This was not an experiment here, They just made it obviously that their time and care with every puppy they have noticed more growth from the females with tails. They are very nice people and we will continue to communicate once I bring him home, they are very interested in him!

Ok people I'm not looking to have the biggest dog on the block, I already do. Indiana Jones weighed 100 in his prime and he gets a ton of attention already. I got this breed because I love this breed and I want a puppy to learn from my dog now while he is still exhuberant.

No, I did not get this dog for breeding purposes he is going to be a pet. However, I Am thinking of getting his papers in the near future before his second birthday. The breeder suggested some people don't think they ever want to breed but as their dog grows it may become a really beautiful and you your thoughts may change....so we will leave that option open but I highly doubt it.

As for the tail cracking or breakig open? Who ever said that? I never heard of this...I have a decent size house, he is not going to knock anything over. I want the tail for wagging purposes, it makes them look much more friendly.

As for the topic of Dew Claws vs Tailbone. Dew claws can be highly dangerous for a dog and serve no purpose what so ever...I don't want my dog playing rough with other, or climbif over rough terrain with pointless pieces or cartilage sticking out of his body. They could tear and cause serious discomfort even fully grown. Also that being said they are pieces of cartilage, not bone like the tail. So how can you say that they are the exact same thing? If you wanna get down to the biology of it. Bone is highly vascular, high rate of Mototic capabilities and is easily replenished stronger than before. Cartilage is non vascular (without blood) and is not easily repair, basically not at all, ever. So when removing Des Claws vs. A TailBone logic would only make one assume that banding a tail induces more stress on a pup...I think that makes some sense...again it was just a family's opinions on puppies with tails and they are very interested to see how
mine grows.
I'm just surprised that not a single person has chimed in agreeing with me just a little bit lol. New pics on Sunday! Thanks for commenting!

It's called happy tail or tail whip. Look it up. No ones agreeing with you because I don't think any of us have heard of that before. I'm sure your breeder is perfectly nice, no one said otherwise.

Okay I am sorry, I will say it... Your breeder is feeding you a load of BS. I will also say that you will love your pup and congrats on the addition, but your breeder is NOT a reputable breeder. They are what is called a Back Yard Breeder. So many red flags in your post make that VERY apparent. The docking of tails has nothing to do with the size of the pup, the genetic makeup of your pup does that. It is predetermined how big your dog will grow by this. Yes, there are things you can do to affect this in ways, poor nutrition, early spay/neuter... Those will determine the muscle mass of your dog but not the bone or height. That is akin to saying that men with circumcised penis's have much smaller dicks then those who aren't circumcised...

Backyard breeder lmfao. Buddy don't bring your jealousy and incompetence into my thread. You know nothing about the breeder or what I paid for this dog. And Now you're comparing growth of a human to growth of a dog....just enjoy the pics and wish you handeled your dog at 2 days old.

Oh but I do... there are a thousand CC breeders just like her. Glad you are happy with your pup and you got what was most important to you, the color 'blue". I am sure your breeder told you how rare it is and how lucky you are :) I am sure your breeder is also correct your dog will be SO MUCH BIGGER cause the tail is left intact, that is solid science based on lots of research done in his yard. I must just be jealous and incompetent, absolutely. You seem very knowledgeable about the breed, I do hope to learn something from you here.

Oh snap! What just happened?
ChiTownTy, I am going to play mediator and say first of all that I am so happy to see the love you have for your puppy. He is very cute and if you're happy with him, then that is what should be most important to you. I will add that everyone here is incredibly dedicated to their dogs and this forum is an incredible source of information. Sadly, too many of us have seen the ill effects back yard breeders and puppy mills have on the integrity of the breeds we love with all our hearts. It takes more than a good temperament and good looks to be reason for breeding a dog. Too many people don't do their research and put the time and effort into their dogs and it truly shows. This forum is a great place to learn wonderful new things about your dog and share your passion with other mastiff owners. From my time on this forum I have learned that many things that people believe to be true can actually be harmful to dogs. But to learn, you have to be open to the fact that sometimes you are going to be wrong and sometimes you will be told things you do not like to hear. If you can accept this with an open mind without getting defensive than I believe you will really enjoy your time here on this forum.

I will also comment on the tail docking issue. It is a personal choice, end of story. However, I have never heard of any effects on growth. I can see your logic, but it just doesn't have the results to back it up. Every time my brother broke a bone(just about every summer), I could see that his body worked extra hard to repair the damage. He often lost weight during his recovery times. He did end up growing up to a height appropriate for his genetics though and 25 years and 32 breaks, 7 major surgeries, 5 minor surgeries and one near death experience did not seem to stunt his growth long term. I would imagine that dogs do go through a similar experience where they might lose weight when recovering from surgery, but I feel like the long term results will be the same regardless.

Ok Cody from Canada, you obviously need to check yoself and your comprehension if you are even reading anything I have written. I did not choose this breed based on the size alone and I did not enter the corso world with intentions of bringing home a big blue eye dog. Do you even read what I write or just throw yor opinions out there totally uneducated on the situation? I paid for my dog weeks before he was born! I was getting first pick and 100% bringing home a puppy from that litter. I did not mention to the breeder what I wished for aesthetically so how could they have any basis to persuade and sell me on? It was just their family's point of view with their past experiences banding tails...the whole family had the same notion, father, kids, boyfriend.... I didnt come on here preaching anything or saying I was correct, I was merely asking your professional opinions. Instead, a highschool drama filled mock trial arose. Real mature.
Thanks for looking! More pics Sunday!

Hi everyone! I am a new member here and I felt the need for an introduction and some bragging about my puppy :p
My name is Tyler, 24yrs young and I'm from the northwest suburbs of Chicago. I purchased my first cane corso 4 weeks ago, when I contacted a breeder and put a deposit down on this little guy a week before he was born! He was in my hands at 3 days old!!! I get to bring him home April 19th and I am too excited!! I wanted a Blue Cane Corso and I couldn't ask for more! I have one dog at home, a huge mutt that loves little animals and he will be ecstatic to have a puppy around.
Enjoy
these pics, will update regularly!

Hmm, Cody from Canada, I like that. You are the one that brought up color and size not me. I have read what you have written, you picked your puppy when it was born. I am curious what you based that choice on. My guess would be color and size, since you have NO idea about the dogs structure or temperament at that age. You are bringing your puppy home at 6 weeks, which by any reputable breeder is FAR too young to leave it's mom and littermates. It needs at least 2 more weeks with them for proper socialization, bite inhibition and a large variety of other important developmental behaviours. You kept your pups tail intact, personal choice yes, but were rude when people disagreed with your breeders made up theory. There are is no factual documentation that supports that claim. Believe me if it were real then the anti crop/dock campaign would be all over it. I am sorry you don't/didn't want to hear what I said, but unfortunately it was/is the truth. The fact that your breeder is suggesting you may want to breed your dog in the future because it is beautiful, well that there, in compilation with EVERYTHING else you have written here, tells us quite plainly what kind of breeder you have chosen. Regardless of the amount of money you spent on your pup, to be honest that means very little in reality. That said have a great time with your pup, I hope he is healthy and turns out to be everything you wanted in a dog. Enjoy him.

Well my friend you are what the cools kids call a "hater". What don't you understand when I say I paid for the dog before he was born? Weather he popped out pink green or red it didn't matter. I pick this breeder based on the parent dogs and the quality of life she gives them. Dude you are all the way up in Canada, you are like third world to Chicago. There are TONS Of quality breeders in Illinois. And We're not making test tube babies, 6 weeks is perfectly old enough, it's a dog. I'm sorry if you had to wait longer and that makes you upset. Or maybe you didn't get the color you like. What ever it is something is really bothering you. You might wanna go see your vet.

Actually 6 weeks is not long enough. If you read through the threads here you'll see lots of people got their pups at 6 weeks and then struggled with issues like bite inhibition. Ideally they stay with the breeder at least until 8 weeks, if not 10-12. Also Cody is one of the most experienced Corso people on the forum, as well as a moderator and is very passionate about the breed because she lives and breathes her dogs. You'll find that there are many different personalities here and if you have am issue discussing like an adult rather than jumping to childish accusations like she must be jealous, this may not be the best place for you.
