I'm still in shock. I thought I was just taking her for a chest x-ray. I believe it started in February, she wasn't feeling well, was lethargic, wasn't eating. Took her to the vet and she only barked at him once, her blood work was mostly normal, white mildly elevated, slight fever. After a round of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories she was back to her old self.

Fast forward yesterday. She is again getting lethargic, off her kibble and her breathing is not right. It got worse at night when she tried to lay down she was almost whimpering. Took her to the vet this morning and he wanted x-ray. We did not do the in Feb because she got better. We had to go the specialist diagnostic hospital. The vet took two films (the fact that she went to two vets offices with not so much as a growl told me how bad she was feeling) and immediately brought her out for an ultrasound. She had a massive pleural effusion on xray that was compressing her lungs so he wanted to get a better look with the ultrasound and do a thoracentesis. I asked if he could draw out enough fluid to give her some relief and he said he would try. Unfortunately it was not just a fluid, it was a very thick puss that could not be aspirated. He said if we started IV fluids and mega IV antibiotics she MIGHT make it to morning, when surgery could evaluate her for a thoracotomy to try and clear out the abscess. He gave her less than a 25 % chance. I couldn't make her suffer any more. I held her and kissed her until she was no longer in pain.

She was THE most amazing dog I have ever had in my life. I love them all but she was my heart. I'll miss you my most beautiful girl.

Words can't express how very sorry I am. My sil had wise words for me when I lost my boy unexpectedly. She said, "Someone has to suffer. Aren't you so glad it's you and not him?" Of course I was, but the loss - it's so large. I know you're suffering and I'm so damn sorry. Be at peace, beautiful girl. Strength and hugs to you.

No words will ever heal the wounds you are suffering at this time.
Only time and the happy memories you had with your precious pup will heal
The pain I know you are suffering right now.
My heart goes out to you and your family at this most painfull time.
Run free good girl, there is a special place in heaven for you.

I'm so sad and sorry for your loss. I'm new here so I didn't get to know Daisy through your posts, but this post definitely speaks volumes about your beautiful girl.

All of us who have lost our beloved pets can feel the pain right along side you. RIP Daisy.

Tears...when you lose a dog it hurts so much. When you lose your heart dog, it's painful and shocking. Sounds like Daisy was a strong, noble girl. Keep her memory alive by thinking of all the goofy, silly things she did, and the special things you did together.
Good bye dear Daisy. You did your job, you loved your human. Good dog.

Thanks all. My husband was on an airplane going out of town when I took her to the vet. I have this huge hole. Part of me wants to avoid the forum because I cry every time I come here but I can't go without my mastiff fix. :(
