That corso is pretty, poor Apollo its such hard work.

So they rings didn't accommodate larger dogs. Well at least the schnauzer person came back to apologize talk about etiquette. :)

Well, the ring size doesn't work well for the toys breeds either lol. But yah, they reall need a larger ring for the working group.....I mean we're talking the English Mastiff, the Bull mastiff, the TM, the Leonburger, the black russian terrier, the huskey and malamute, the great dane, the CC.....

Oh, the EM today was this HUGE brindle male. I was so thrilled to see a brindle!

Daniel Rosa is her handler and I think he handles a lot of different breeds but has been her main handler since they started campaigning.

Small ring size when having a large dogs can be a serious problem as it can make it hard to really move out a breed and showcase their movement well if they have compacted the ring too much. I know that we have the same problem here when it comes to some of the local shows.

I didn,t catch his name, but the name fits the face if that makes sense. Bit of an accent, just enough I had to actually LISTEN to what he was saying.

The ring size wouldn,t be so bad if it was just a couple dogs, plenty long enough to move out, but with the whole group packed in there it was just way cramped.

It is him in the picture.

It would be if the group was small but as working and sporting are the largest groups there are always too many dogs making it too hard to do a lot at those times. It is when you hope your dog made a great impression in breed as that can help out big time. I have seen the judge split the group and fouce 1/2 into the middle of the ring or all to one side and run the pattern differently just to accomidate all the dogs in there and still get a good feel for them.

Good going Ruth! As BlackShadow said, it gets easier every time. I know Apollo isn't like most dogs, who can be kind of revved up before going into the ring; but if you act like this is the MOST fun you EVER had, he'll enjoy it too. And it's fun to be there, seeing all the other dogs, etc. And as Mountainfila said, there are unscrupulous people out there who will try to throw you off your game. I've seen them toss bait in front of another dog when the judge wasn't looking, just to throw the dog/handler team off. Someone once told my housemate that one of her puppies was in the pound, & he looked AWFUL, just as she was stepping in the ring.Bitch.

At least throwing bait in front of Apollo won't do anything lol. Though I swear if one more person tells me "you just need a different bait!".......no squeekers don,t work either. I'm tempted to try another ribbiting froggy, but they're to big to stuff in a pocket which would make it awkward.

Even though I don't show dogs, I am glad you provided the rest of us an "inside view" of what it's like to go through the process (the good, bad, and ugly, LOL.)

I've been to Westminster a few times (it's only a few blocks from where I live), mostly to hang out in the benching area and visit with the mastiffs... :)

But I have seen a few shows as well, and it does seem stressful; although most dogs by this point seem to take it in stride...

Thanks for sharing.

Definetly stressfull, but I'm enjoying parts of it too. Seeing Josee, after we admired her on TV at Westminster, was just to cool. This was the first time I've seen a Leonburger up close. I had a great chat with a young woman working on Jr Handling through her 4H club (she had raptures over Apollo and he insisted on kissing her so I'd say it was mutual). I got the name and website for a guy who makes kangaroo leather braided show leads so I can see if I can get a custom set done to match Apollo's coat (I'm using black now). Found out the local chow rescue had a litter of ten pups almost ready for new homes....

We have a local show here every year, reminds me of a livestock auction.

In someways....very much so! Hey, if you can catch the Chessapeake club shows you might very well catch Apollo's breeder with Apollo's brother! Aslan would be worth the look-see.

Ok, so the trick to getting Apollo to stand and stack in perfect form is to plant my husband in the direction I want Apollo to be facing.....Note to self: train hubby how to move around the ring ahead of us so that Apollo is always facing in the right direction. One of the other handlers asked if we'd have been better off with Hubby handling Apollo, the answer is no, he'd have done the same thing with me on the side of the ring. The handler of the Leonberger (who was ahead of us today) was trying to get Apollo's attention so he'd face the right direction, he then rather grumpily asked if "Apollo" really is the dog's name, cause Apollo was ignoring him....At which point Josee's handler, who was two dogs ahead of us, broke in and said no, thats just a Tibetan for you, thats how they handle. The Leonberger handler gave us both looks like we'd grown horns and ignored us for the rest of the ring.

Apollo did do much better today, the crowds didn't phase him as much, so there is hope in our future!
