Doggies on the furniture?

Was never much for pets on furniture before Trinity. She was just such snuggly, three month old, cuteness I couldn't resist when she came through that door. And imo, the house she came from where she was crated nearly 24/7, laughed at as a year old german shepherd bi--- beat her up and nearly tore her nose off, had to fight for her food with that GS and a bunch of pit bulls- she needed the human affection. She still hasn't completely recovered from the crappy beginning she had, but she's getting there. She respects the comfort she's allowed and knows not to take it for granted.

Well, I guess I must be the kinda bad parent here ;-) . We allow our mastiff on most of the upholstered furniture once he learned "DOWN" (caps not yelling in this case, but a very firm tone). He does very well. The only issue I have ever had furniture wise was one of the kids leaving food on the kitchen table and Willie (our em) deciding it mudy be his now. That landed him in trouble, but otherwise we are pretty laid back.

I have had pet dogs my entire life. From poodles, schnauzers, spaniels, english & irish setters, husky & 2 shepard mixes... while Raistlin is not my first dog he is my first mastiff and he shares something with every dog I've ever owned and that is pack mentality. They will follow the pack leader AS LONG AS HE/SHE RESPECTS that leader but those with a dominant streak will randomly test and challenge that respectability and they use thier strength and mouths to do so. My dog, who I do call son, will always know the humans in the house are above him in the pack. It doesnt make him any less a member of our family. Children generally only have a pack mentality AMONG THIER PEERS during middle school, and I'm not worrid that one of them can break skin...

Thanks Aubrie!! I am with you on wondering why some feel the need to be so personal and argumentative on this.

Thank you for asking the question. I enjoyed reading the various responses on the topic between furniture and no furniture. After the puppies are weaned, I will get a video of Moose in the recliner and his expression when he has to get out of "Daddy's" chair.

1st - I'm just curious...... "Gus isnt allowed on the couch " .... What does that have to do with the amount of knowledge he has on dogs ???
The OP was regarding allowing your dogs on the furniture..... He replied to the OP.... " gus isnt allowed on the couch " .... ?

2nd.... Jenny is aloud on the couch sometimes. If she has just come in from outside, she has to go to her bed ( big blanket folded in the living room with us) ... But if her paws are clean and she hasn't just had a meal.... we will let her up to cuddle with us. She knows her place though, when its time to get down, its TIME to get down. We just picked up a new bed... and I need a step ladder to get on it, so We are not to worried about her on the bed. She just got a big new crate with a fancy bed in it.... At first, it scared the crap out of her... now she loves her new crate. She will sleep in her crate 95% of the time.... we leave the door unlocked and once in a while you will her the "tap tap tap" of her nails at about 3-4 in the morning.... Shes headin to the couch ! Thats another time we leave her be. hahah

3rd - Bantu, Im beginning to really see your a VERY experienced/knowledgable person here....... I would reallllly like to see your dogs. They must be beautiful specimans, being raised by an expert like yourself. If you could, take a minute or two and post some pics of your beautiful Dogs. Im sure we are ALL axiously waiting to see them ! What breeds do you currently have at the moment ? If you dont mind me asking.

Thanks ;)

Are you a half wit? She called into question the content of my posts and I did the same. "Tyhatts" lol

Billie and Ben are allowed on the two older couches and know that the new one is strictly a no canines couch. However, discoveries of hairs, suggest that this rule applies for all of 5 seconds if we go out and leave them.

:lolbangtable:Yeah, well, that is definitely one way to know! So funny to visualize them obeying your rules perfectly in your presence and then helping themselves to the new one as soon as you leave. Pretty slick! Love it!

I state the below is ONLY based on my own expereinces....lol...
In my experience with my OWN doggies, it depends on the dog and their temperament/demeanor. For example, Boscoe my BM (man every time I type his name I gasp for air I miss him so much), was allowed on the family room couch, or his dog bed but not on the couches in the living (where guests sit). ; I never had any issues with obedience or behaviour ; When he was a young pup between 7 months and 14 months, he went through some typical pretty stubborn teenage issues, but;he was mostly testing me to see what I would let him away with!!!;putting his cuteness to the test!!!

Roxi my Boxer/American bulldog/Staffy cross, well she is challenging at times....;but I have used the couch as a a type of treat I guess you could say.... I have turned it into a mental game.;; I will tell her to sit then say "up" "lay down" and then praise her and pet her, then I say "off" and "sit".; She jumps off and sits.... because I know when I am not there she stretched out all over the couch anyway.... then she immediately jumps off when my key hits the lock of the door...; or I tell her "off" and she slowly literally slides off the couch onto the floor, this is hilarious and I stand there trying very hard not to laugh out loud.

Gunner my 17 week old mastiff mix, he LOVES LOVES LOVES his doggy bed!!; If Roxi is on the couch Gunner may come over sit and cry, and then I say "up" and "lay down" because he wants to cuddle with Roxi. It works for me and my crew.

Again, it depends on the dog(s) and the owner I guess to.; With my dogs, them being allowed to be on the couch does not affect how they interact with me or others, and does not create any dominant issues or obedience problems, for me anyway.; Besides... How could you not want a wrinkly mastiffy tv watching cuddle buddy!!!!!; ha ha!!!

All i would like to say is beware of the Bantu!
I think i know who he is and he thinks and claims that he's an expert in every breed. He's only bred and raised apbts. He'd like to get into the neos, and diff. mastiffs and that's probably why he's here. He causes nothing but trouble and will only downgrade ppls dogs. He does have good general dog knowledge because that's been his life. He also has a way about changing your words to try and make him look more knowledgeable. He can't show pictures of his neos or any mastiffs because he's never owned them. I recognize his verbage, wording and smiley action. Along with trying to get others on his side to build rep. points. Don't let him win on this forum. I would like to warn you all in advanced because if it is him he's the ugliest, crudest, rudest, sneakiest devil that i've ever come across in the dog world. He also causes and enjoys conflict and fights on forums. All i want to say is beware of him. Beleive me it's not worth his knowledge when it's not only wharped but full of venom.

The more i read on this forum and some of his responses tells me its him even more.

On this topic- My dogs are allowed on the beds and couches that we allow them on. :)

I'm trying to figure out why I got tagged in Bantu's post further up. Quite literally, all I did was answer whether or not we let our pets on the furniture and make a joking comment about being the "bad parent." Yet, for some reason, I'm told to " ignore it and refrain from making comments..." I kinda thought that was what a forum was about, was politely sharing opinions/experiences/thoughts. My apologies if I offended anyone else unknowingly...

Again, I agree completely with Cody and AKBull.

Bantu, this forum is about sharing our experiences and knowledge of mastiffs/ molossers. We all have varying degrees of knowledge to share and in the vast majority of cases this is done so in an extremely positive fashion. In the same vein our experiences are shared in the same manner, for everyone to enjoy. This happens because we all respect each others opinions and knowledge. You are not doing this, your posts are agressive and often offensive and I really haven't seen any positive offerings from you. If you want to be negative please do two things:
1) stop posting here and 2) have a look at what it is in your character that leads you to behave in the way that you do.

Absolutely, I don't contribute very regularly, but I do read alot of the posts. By and large I appreciate this forums members for their knowledge and common courtesy. Their seems to be only one source of negativity. Ignore Bantu! Words to live by!

Miel sleeps on the couch when we go to bed. However, during the day she can't get on the couch. What's funny is that when my wife and I stay up past our bedtime Miel nudges us to get off the couch so she can go to bed; she's hilarious. Take a look at my photo album at Miel on the couch sleeping.

I have a loveseat ( with a throw on it) in the TV room and the dogs are allowed on that. I have a gate that keeps the dogs in the TV room. I don't want the dogs on the sectional in the living room but sometimes I will find Lillie on it. She will sometimes jump in the bed with me, not everynight, just if she hears a noise outside. I guess she is protecting me. But she does sleep in her crate too, I leave the door open and she goes right in.
