Carma's growth thread

Probiotics although seldom used, can be very effective in the right situation. Sorry to hear of Carma's problems. Has she had a chance to come into contact with coyote feces?

I got a fila about 5 months ago same thing

Negative parvo test, negative corona, vomiting, dierehea, happened about 8 days after she came home. She was great one minute and the next day she stopped eating and all the symptoms started.

Shucks! Give all your other dogs a booster shot well that's what I did and they didn't get sick. Bleach everything and anything she has came in contact with.

Keep her in a confined room with hard surface flooring that can be mopped with bleach 3-5 times a day. Hydrated, something for the direhea, warm, clean environment with 8:64 bleach mixture as cleaner.

What was she showing before it took a turn for the worst? What symptoms? When was the last time she ate before she hot sick?

The vet said any dog over 3 cannot get parvo, I don't know never dealt with anything like this before. Okay so I noticed she had slowed down about Tuesday she wasn't getting sick yet but she was sleeping more often. Wednesday the same, yesterday she started having some vomiting but I thought the kids had gave her something since they are always throwing her food. This morning she barely walked out of her kennel and I had noticed that she had thrown up in there. I watched her walk off and saw she had the runs and then she just went and laid back down. I knew something was wrong. I called the vet and they said to get her there for the parvo test which I did. I used to work as a vet tech so I know the basics of home care. I did booster Tubarao this afternoon. I have two older dogs that I shouldn't have to worry about and I don't really know if I should just booster everyone in case even the older dogs.

She was eating up until today, last night was the last time she ate. She is in a seperate bathroom. I bought puppy pads to dispose of because she will not be going back outside until she is better. I can bag those up and throw them away. I bought 2 gallons of bleach and pedialite. I have plain yogurt on hand. The vet gave her amoxicilian and two other medications I will need to check what those are. I have been syringing the pedialite and just gave her the meds.

Chances of older dogs getting sick is highly unlikely they have already built an immunity to what she has more than likely but I wouldn't chance it.

Parvo test could come back negative and if you re test in five days could come back positive. Your vet seems to be treating symptoms which is the onky thing you can do. Hopefully she is strong enough to pull through. You guys will be in my prayers.

Notify the breeder ASAP!

Feed her plain yogurt now! I've saved a lot of sick pups in the past with parvo with yogurt, amoxicillin, probiotics, Iv fluids, clean clean clean warm environments, anti diarrheal meds, and pain relievers. Nothing the vet will do will be any different than what you can do with buying meds from vet and housing her yourself save the money on the In vet care and use it to buy best meds your vet has to offer.

If you can't afford meds I'll overnight them to you just pm me if you need help.

The vet prescribes meds from walmart three prescriptions were $12, do you have different meds I may need? They would not give me anything for her pain or fever

Not that I know of but she does wonder the property. She has been known to eat a horse patty or two though

Parvo has a metallic, copper like smell. It is very noticeable. Only aspirin for pain, nothing else. She either has a bad bacteria/virus or she got into some cleaning products/alcholol.

Will her body smell? I don't smell anything other than the typical fila stink but nothing overwhelming. There is nothing around that she could have gotten into unless she found something outside

The smell would be in her feces, and it is strong. The other thing I can think of besides what I mentioned above is a foreign object, plastic, chicken bone etc.

That is a possibility, the vet did palpitate her stomach and said she couldn't feel anything but gas but again I know this is not a fool proof check. At the vet she had a fever of 103

No it's straight blood and the last time she went at 4 it was still bloody nothing so far.

The only thing that I can think of that did look tampered with was a bag of calf starter but its' not poison. It is a very sweet milk powder formula for young calves. The cup inside the bag was wet and the inside of the bag looked as though someone was eating it but this was just last night and she threw up yesterday morning so I don't think it was that.

So sorry that your girl is sick - will keep her in my prayers to be better by morning ! has she had vaccines since she got to you ? If she had at least 1 DHP/Parvo around 4 months of age you are probably not looking at parvo but probably a bout of HGE ( google HGE dogs and you will find lots of info). Keeping her hydrated is super important although IV fluids work so much better than SQ - do you know anyone who can come start a line on her ? Has she continued to vomit ? diarrhea ? What meds did they send you to pick up for her ? We see a dog every week or so in the office with it - they recover usually quite well with support. Hope she is feeling better already !!

Sully was pretty ill with HGE a year or so ago - he is raw fed so I guess he got some bad chicken (although dogs are pretty resistant to salmonella it can still happen) poor guy had bloody stool just running out of him and the first day was vomiting alot , I kept him on IV at my office ( and luckily for me I was able to administer fluids in the evening at home ) for 2 days with meds given IV and he recovered quickly , although I think it took me a few extra days to relax again !

Hang in there !

She has had 2 rounds of the 5 way parvo vaccination, really 3 but one was an overshot by the first vet she went to. I took her to the vet and they gave me the supplies to treat her at home for this unknown "virus". I have a bag of fluids to do sub-q fluid for the next 4 days. 2 units per day. She is making a coughing/raspy noise and is drooling a bit. I have amoxicilian and 2 meds for nausea/diarrhea and one to stop stomach cramping.

At the office they gave her a steriod shot, a shot of an antibotic, and anti-nausea/diarrhea meds.

No bloody stool or vomit since 4 this afternoon.

Edited to add that she is 13 weeks old now
