Stuck between a rock & a hard place...

Re: Stuck between a rock & a hard place...

I was able to teach my CC to "watch". I did it for a specific reason, but he will do it on command. As far as calling him off when he is alerted, it isn't so easy. If he alerts to something that I know isn't a threat, just showing him what it is that he is barking at is enough to calm him, but that is when we are inside and he hears something outside.

One thing you might consider, but the difference in my dog in day and in the night is, well night and day. He will let men walk past in the day light. He will not at night. He has some line in his mind where he goes from watching them to full on "Stop right there, do not come closer". I notice you take her out a lot at night and that might heighten everything for her.

I've never seen Zeus raise his hackles but Hades does (albeit pretty infrequently).

OMG I never saw that thread-I read the whole thing-Ruth, you are aware that you are seriously a masochist right?

Tessa loved the videos--if you have more give me the link!

Oh, and yes, I have shredded paper plates all over my floor--yes-a very cheap & easy to clean up toy.

Tessa's newest 'toy' is the new tall size trash can that was holding what is supposed to be her other 'toys'...go figure.
Still cheaper than most dog toys & it'll take her a few weeks to destroy the entire thing.

Ahhhh yeah he does have his hackles up...a little bit. I need to check out Moo again and see if she does it, maybe because her mane is long'ish I never really noticed it. Does Apolllo sneeze when he gets really worked up? Mooshi sneezes like crazy when she is going off on one LOL.

Whats with the paper plates? Do you just leave them in a pile for the 'fur kids' or do you fling them about for them or.....I want to buy my two some paper plates but I think they would just stand there and look at them like 'what do I do with these'?

I give them, 1 at a time, either when I am done using them, or I fill one with ice cubes & she eats the ice & rips up the bowl.

It's just another thing for her to shred. She also likes to shred brown paper bags, I also give her the empty dog & cat food bags to shred.

It started because I use paper plates for myself during the work week & she was stealing them from the trash... & seemed to take so much joy in them, I usually just give them to her now when I am done.

Tessa does a sneezing thing when she's wrestling with another pooch & on walks when she's got her snout into something good.

I've been repeatedly told lol

I'll post them in that thread if take more! I used to have more but lost some when my desktop crashed.

Paper plates: in my case started as an easy way to distract Arty--smear peanut butter all over a paper plate. He's good for 1/2hr at least while he licks the plate clean and then shreds it to little peices. And Apollo has always just liked shredding paper and cardboard....so it was an easy progression! He loves paper bags from fast food places too.

MM, yah, he'll often sneeze right afterwards! Or when he and Arty have been goofing off. He's never hackled up his whole mane, but that spot on his back does get raised.

well, you can cheat too LOL and use them for real--have dinner on then & then give them to the pooch to shred and not have to do dishes--they double their worth & function :)

Yup, works well too, especially if you had something a bit greasy or hte like, then the paper plate is EXTRA awesome lol

Re: Stuck between a rock & a hard place...

Tessa has taken a liking to an old recliner, though she sort of overflows from it. It sits right by the window & sometimes lately, she's showing interest in actually looking OUTSIDE.

Last night, Tessa was standing on the recliner looking out & let out a ***GROWL*** YAY!!!! It lasted a few seconds, but was a good growl-not a play growl.
I told her she was a good girl, but did not want to distract her, since this is the 1st time she's ever growled at anything that outside. So I sat back quiet & just watched her hoping to see some other reactions.

As luck would have it, I had a friend on his way over to help me cut her claws, & he pulled up a few minutes later, & she recognized him immediately, so happy- happy joy- joy, guard dog session over.

Now onto the other miscellany:

From the time I got Tessa at 11 1/2 weeks, she's had a serious aversion to certain things.
Brushes, combs, actually *ANYTHING* that looks like a grooming instrument, even if it is not, she wants to destroy it.
Aside from the fact she wants them no where on her person, she actually has gotten upset seeing me brush my own hair, or brushing the cats.

It was clear to me the very 1st week that she recognized these instruments for what they were, but I dismissed it initially as puppy curiosity, until the 2nd & 3rd times & so on.

Over the months, no amount of "desensitization" has worked.
Tessa HATES these things, period, & she has destroyed any brush she can find, & knows full well where they are kept, but has not (yet) taken to opening drawers, where they are now kept.

I have a pair of Miller's Forge nail clipper cutters that look similar to a pruner, and anything that resembles this gets the same treatment, like my needle nose pliers if I have them out...or any pliers actually.

I know I've mentioned previously about Tessa having trap scars on her back foot/leg & that it damaged her tail as well, & that her fur was clippered when I received her.
She wants no one, including me, touching that part of her tail, & gets agitated when I inspect her leg where the scar is.

Her foster's had Tessa for 3 weeks, and the rescue said the scar on the foot was there when they took her in, & it is also noted on the papers when she was taken by the rescue.

So whatever happened to Tessa happened when she was younger than 8 weeks-it was partially healed by the time she was in rescue at 8 weeks, but her memory is rock solid-whatever occurred imprinted on her so deeply that it is a problem to this day, & has gotten less manageable, despite my efforts at soothing & positive reinforcement.

Trying to cut her claws is like wrestling a person, there has never been an incident or mishap in trimming her nails since I've had her, at 11 1/2 weeks, but that doesn't matter to Tessa.
The issue is not with me, the issue is with the tool she sees.
I can no longer do it alone, as she's too big, & it's difficult even with 2 people, 1 being a 220+lb male...
The ONLY thing on my side with this issue is that she is submissive & sweet to me, & adores the person I have helping. She DOES WANT to bite, but has not.
if I put the tool down, the situation changes.
I do not think I would trust a situation of another person, like a groomer trying to clip her nails. I think Tessa would bite.
What ever trauma occurred when she was that young, she's dedicated her memory to specific objects she recognizes, & it's not going away.

Now of course, I'd not planned on having a pooch with a coat such as Tessa's, nor the maintenance required. At this point, her coat is still developing, & no shed yet, so no real maintenance has been needed.
But, I know it's gonna come eventually, & while I might get lucky & have 1 big TM shed that lasts a while & is over, she's a mix, so chances are that's not gonna be the case.

I *think* (hope/pray) that I *might* be able to get the grooming of her coat issue resolved by not using anything that resembles a comb or brush. She loves when I rake my fingers through her fur, & they have gloves with nubs on them that may allow me to work her coat that way. it will take more time & effort, but if it gets the job done without issue, that's all I'm looking for.

Tessa does have an issue with gloves,--go figure-- but it's not a fear thing, thankfully, it's because of the sweaty smell--like when dogs go for shoes/socks. She has stolen & destroyed every glove she can get, dish gloves, work gloves, yard gloves...latex/cotton/leather...so these must be kept up too.

Good girl Tessa!

Hm, maybe a shedding blade? Like they use on horses? It probly won't get deep enough but it might be better than a grooming glove, and might not look brush like to her.

Maybe a dremel for her nails?

Re: Stuck between a rock & a hard place...

I would LOVE to use a dremel on her nails--this simply will never happen. I can handle her paws, as long as I am not holding anything else-any object that resembles a tool.

I'm an avid DIY'er--so have a dremel...unless I dropped her a couple of valium, & knocked her out, there's no chance.

On the grooming end-hands can touch her fur, anything else is a no so far. I really do not want to have to restrain her.

Whatever happened to her as a young pup, she's holding onto that stuff-It wasn't me-just like the 1st time I rolled up a newspaper & she cowered--she KNEW what it was-but it wasn't for her-was for mosquitos-sometimes I get the feeling she's never gonna fully trust me.
It doesn't matter one bit the desensitization I'd tried & how I tried to make things pleasant. She holds onto things deeply.

She was good at the vets previously, because she was smaller, I don't know how it will be now.
The little issues she had as a small puppy, well, they're just big issues now-like she tolerated because she was small-now she doesn't want to tolerate.

This is one of those days where her stubbornness has beaten me down.

Her poo eating is back with a vengeance, and now I have proof she's pre-meditating her poo-fests. She RARELY will poo when I am there & rarely on a walk with me or anyone else. She also doesn't like to go if anyone is watching. Today I was doing yard work & turned around when she was pooing-she stopped MID POO & held it. Cut it off mid turd...
I cleaned up what was there. As soon as I was busy again, she went the rest & was feasting when I caught her. UGh. I have also found a couple of hidden turds--hidden in holes she dug...so she actually had a stash. I can't make this shit up!

She's got issues Ruth, deep seated issues. I have never scolded her when she's poo'd or peed, as I knew full well every accident she'd ever had in the house was my fault. Even to this day when she goes I tell her she is a good girl.
She always was weird about being watched when pooing-despite me being positive about it. She will hide behind planters to poo. I have to step away from the door, actually, I have to leave the room-no amount of me pretending I am not there works.
Ok, off to the park, maybe we can find a pooch to play today.
