I am very experienced with dogs but this is our first EM. Our 10 week old EM has a trait that I have not seen in our other pups and I'm interested if this is common in the breed. His front legs do not straighten completely at the joint (what would be our wrist joint) when he stands or walks. It's not severe but it's noticeable. I would describe it as if he's walking mostly on his toes and his legs have a slight tremble at times.

I have one vet's opinion that it's common in the large breeds and his tendons will naturally stretch with time, so no worries. Another vet has not seen this before and will research a bit and call me with what he found out.

Anyone have this experience with their pups? What do you think?

Thanks

I've never seen anything like that before, and it would make me a little concerned... Hope someone else can chime in.

Oh poor boy :-( , that must be uncomfortable for him. Does he have any issues moving around?

Looks like elbow dysplasia to me. I do not have a lot of knowledge of elbow dysplasia. Hope this link helps you out to determine if that is the proper diagnosis.

Canine Elbow Dysplasia: One Name for Many Different Problems

Have you contacted the breeder? Does your contract with the breeder cover genetic disorders?

I'm going to disagree, that looks like a wrist issue not elbow. Also elbow dysplasia rarely has a visible component other that an abnormal gait. Kryten's legs never had anything like that.
My first thought was that he was knuckling over. http://www.greatdanelady.com/articles/knuckling_over.htm

Smokeycat, you are right on the money. I feel confident that this is it. Stage 1 knuckling over. We have seen improvement over the last several days. It helps me to have a name to it and know that his tendons should stretch over time. Thank you to everyone who chimed in. Lewis thanks you too. :)

Yep knuckled over pastern problem. Needs a diet adjustment and free play on grass, sand or uneven ground.

Update on the knuckling over issue: He is 12 weeks old today and his legs look great. I changed his diet, increased his outdoor time, and gently stretched his legs each day. He is growing like a weed. 36 pounds and lean! Thanks again.
