Nosework

I have the same issue until I get to know people. I usually bring my kiddo to our classes, so she gets stuck video-ing or taking pictures. I have had to pay her... she gets so tired of me and my "dog" stuff, lol!
I stick out like a sore thumb in my class. In a group of more mature and "normal" looking people, there I am with my pink hair, piercings and tattoos. The people there don't really know what to make of me and I don't find them very relatable. They clearly feel some kind of obligation to interact with me, but assume that Angus is a "pit bull" and default to that, "it's the owner, not the breed" conversation, which I find really funny. Jason (my boyfriend) is so tired of me and my dog stuff HAHAHAHA I might have to try bribing him.

That's funny! Slightly ::eek:ff topic:: I watched a documentary last night (forget the title, I'm horrible about that) but basically a University set up a study that involved paying 9th graders $50 to get all C's or better. If they did, they would also get a chance to win $500. They brought up their passing students by 7%-10% or something like that. It's all about the incentives, kids and dog training included. If the incentives are good enough you can get ______ ,to pretty much do anything.
Very good to know! I will keep this in mind. hahahaha

Ah, gotcha! You know what's funny? Now that I'm in my (early!) 40s I fit in with that more mature and "normal" looking crowd... but that's just cause they can't see my almost full back tat and I haven't worn a nose ring in months, lol. I'm in disguise as a middle aged mom.

I'm thinking a disguise like this may help me...

Aaaaand it cut off everything I typed after the link... Maybe if you had a funny shirt that was related to what you guys were doing they'd be more inclined to talk about that than your "pit bull". Or you could behave like my neighbor and be loud and boisterous. Make sure everyone knows you are there as soon as you get there and make sure to talk to every odd bird and treat everyone as if you've known them for years.

HAHA! Both are great suggestions! I have taken to making fun of Angus because he's the loudest dog in the class - very vocal, which is funny because I used to quietly laugh at the other people for having noisy, obnoxious dogs. Angus does this loud singing thing which is kind of like, "ooooooooh-whooooooooaaaaa-oooooooh-roooooooo." It's pretty funny and ridiculous.

In the corner of room that we do our searches in, there's a big stuffed dog that Angus doesn't like. He doesn't want to be anywhere near that thing. So, after our container searches, we did a few interior searches. Of course, his odour was under the stuffed dog's paw. We went around the perimeter once and he skipped by the dog. We went around a second time and he skipped the dog again. He caught on to the odour though and searched every container near the dog at least twice. He knew the odour was somewhere on/under that dog and looked at me like, "really?!" So then it's like he just says, "fuck it!" He sticks his nose under the stuffed dogs stomach and flips it over so it goes flying out of the way and lands on its head. He finds the odour, showed the stuffed dog who was boss, got his praise and treats and all was good LOL

Where are you doing the nose work? Maybe Ajax and I can try too. Sounds like a lot of fun. We are entering a rally trial at the end of November. We also tried tracking in the summer. That was fun, but way too expensive. I always thought nose work was kind of boring, but not based on your description. :)

We go to chilliwack. It's a 30 minute drive from my place. I really like the instructors. They have classes in Langley and delta, but the times just didn't work with my schedule.

Awesome about the rally trial! I've been wanting to for a while now, but anxiety has gotten the better of me. :(

Also, we recently adopted a senior female corso. I was thinking she'd probably enjoy having another corso to play with sometime?

I think the place in chilliwack is called the K9 starlight and aquatic center or something like they. They have a bunch of different stuff happening there. It's pretty awesome.

I came across this. Looks like fun and doesn't require you to leave the house if you don't want or don't have a nosework class you attend.

Lillie starts Nosework on Tuesday. I cannot wait to see how she does! Her breeder started the litter on an early scent stimulation program, knowing that I was going to do Nosework with her. She uses her nose ALL.THE.TIME and we've been playing lots of scent games. Nosework isn't boring at all, it can appear slow and methodical, depending on the dog (not Yogi, he's like a bull in a china shop. He has knocked over planters, gone through one box and gotten it stuck around his middle trying to get to odor... he's a nut!) But it is really hard work for the dog, and as soon as you start doing blind hides, it's a lot of work for the handler, too. Yogi will come home from a Nosework class and pass out like he jut ran a marathon.

Thanks, I will check out that place. We might arrange a date some time, see how it goes. I hope your senior does not find Ajax's energy too overwhelming. :)

Most of the time I find the senior to be overwhelming. She may be old, but she moves like a young dog! Haha

Angus and I at nose work. This was a container search where the odour was not paired to a reward (his treats). It was not a blind hide as I knew where it was. This drill is in preparation for an upcoming odour recognition test. Also, getting me to start looking at how his body language changes once he locates the odour as you don't start teaching formal alerts until you're about 2 years into nose work, you have to base it off their body language.

Nice work!!! I love how methodical he is. The more video you can get of his searching to watch later, the better. Some dogs are so subtle with their alerts, and some are very obvious. If Angus ends up being subtle, the videos will really help you learn his signaling. Lillie and I started Nosework last night, she is much slower than Yogi, very much like Angus is. Yogi is like a bull in a china shop...
