Nosework

Oh man, I've never thought of that! Angus typically marks on things... I don't know if he would while he's working, or not? Should be interesting!

Thanks for the article! I'll definitely take a look.

In our training we do "pee, search, pee". each dog goes outside to pee prior to their search, they search, they go back out to pee. It helps them learn peeing is not allowed during searching. It's definitely a thing...

Great article! I'd like to try working him off leash and see how we do. I'm always worried about the leash getting tangled.

That's interesting because in our classes we start off leash. Leashwork doesn't come until later and we use at least 12 foot leashes. Also, harnesses are encouraged to prevent any inadvertent leash corrections. I resisted my trainer's recommendation to use a harness for probably 6 months... I was worried about how hard Yogi would be able to pull on a harness. When I finally gave in and got one, it really improved our searches.

Angus and I finished up our nose work class yesterday. As usual, he rocked it.We did 1 box drill and then searched some dressers. That was really fun. There was also a clothes rack with some bags hanging off it. So, some odour went into a bag. That was also fun watching Angus trying to figure out where the odour was because he hasn't ever really had to search things that were hanging above him. We ended the evening with a regular interior search with the odour container being attached to some metal shelving. We start Advanced Nosework in January! Yippee!

Yay Angus! I love the video of him in the yard, he definitely knows what he is there to do!

Lillie just finished Nosework 1 and we start Nosework 2 in January also. It's really interesting working 2 dogs, every dog has their own idiosyncracies and Lillie is sooooo different from Yogi. Our trainer took a video of our very first session, I should have that to share soon!

That's awesome! I really want to start another dog in Nosework, but I don't know if I should start Thalia (cause she doesn't do enough, right? haha), or Tashie. Of course, it's all dependent on how much time and money I have in January haha.Post the video when you get it!

Oh, I know! Lillie starts Obedience 2, Agility and Nosework 2 in Jan... that's 3 classes a week just for her. We are doing a Barn Hunt seminar and fun test on Jan 16th with both dogs, so Yogi will get to do that, at least, lol!

Ooooh! I want to do barn hunt with Thalia again! The place we go to is just a pain in the ass to drive to every week.

Lillie sounds like a busy girl!

It really sucks that the sports i want to do aren't really offered in the winter here. It's too cold and rainy. We will just have to wait until next spring/summer..

Sometimes, I think I bite off more than I can chew... My real goal was to have Yogi titled in Nosework and Rally before I got another dog, well, that didn't happen. So now I've got 2 that I really want to compete with. I'm thinking Lillie probably doesn't really have what it takes as far as drive to really accomplish much in the way of sport work. I'm not saying that in a bad way, it's just who she is, but we are gonna try a couple things and see what works. I'm actually thinking therapy for her, too. The more I watch her with people and realize how steadfast and calm she is in any situation she's in, I'm even kind of hoping for Disaster Stress Relief Therapy for that girl. Time will tell!

And ditto here with barn hunt. There are only 2 places in the state and they are each about an hours drive. Too much every week and the barns aren't heated, so regular practice is only offered when it's warm enough...

Our nosework trainer just sent the links to Lillie's very first class. She just leaning that good things come in a box Lilly NW1W1 - YouTube
Awwwww! She's awesome! Such a good girl. Right now, most of the work I do with the dogs is purely for fun. Only because my anxiety gets the better of me when it comes to imagining having to perform in front of people and judges. In reality, I would love to have titles on Thalia and Angus. My New Years resolution is to get Angus into some obedience. Just basic obedience. He's not actually very well trained and I do much better in a class/group setting and having deadlines and expectations, rather than just trying to do things on my own haha.

I hear ya! I almost passed out when Yogi and I took our Therapy dog certification test... And then just about burst into tears when the evaluator came up to me and said "what do you think I'm going to tell you?" I thought we failed for sure. And I think he would have done better at our first nosework trial if I hadn't been so dang nervous, too.

I think working with a dog is one of the best ways to help through that, the more you learn to focus on your dog and less on the people there, the better it will get. If it's not something you want to do, then keep doing it for fun, but if titleing is something you want to work twords, the more you try it the more at ease you will become! Also, they are always looking for volunteers at trials, I volunteered at a nosework trial and it was amazing! So informative and a really great experience, it really helped me to know what to expect when we trialed, and it also helped me to realize that no one was there judging us (except the judge, lol) and everyone is very supportive.

Titling is definitely something I want to work toward. My trainer said that I should have my Rally Advanced title at this point, but I have nothing hahaha It's all good though. I'll get there eventually!I really want to start volunteering at events. I think it would really help to get to know the venues, people who attend, judges etc...

We started working on a new scent, which is pine and doing two hides (one wintergreen and one pine) in one search. We've also been doing more difficult hides (in a crack in the floor, or the underside of a table for example). We've also been working on different containers such as purses, coffee mugs, an insulin kit etc... Also, working with distractions (squeaky toys, stuffies). Angus has been doing really well. :)
