Nosework

Angus and I have started a nose work class. We're about 4 weeks in so far. He's such a rockstar at it. Small brag is that he seems to be ahead of his class. He seems to just get it. It is really nice because there is only one dog in the area at a time, so there's never any worries about the dogs meeting and a potential fight happening.

The first few weeks we started with pairing a primary reward and target odour (winter green oil). The box with the odour in it also contained his treats in it. With 5-6 boxes lined up, only 1 has the target odour and treats. Angus has been able to search each box until he gets to the right one, which is great! Sometimes as we exit the area, he checks each box a second time, which is pretty cute.

We have also played games where the boxes are stacked up on top of each other, or piled onto each other into what looks like a cardboard mountain. The dog has to sift through the boxes and identify which box contains the odour. Again, Angus has no problems with getting to the correct box.

This Tuesday, we stopped pairing. So, only the target odour was in the box and the dogs got treats once they found the odour and kept their head inside the box. We also worked on putting the boxes at different heights. So there would be a bunch of boxes on the floor and the box with the target odour was up on a chair. Angus successfully searched each box and had no issues with the height. It was kind of funny because the instructor was in the process of stating that the height difference can be confusing for dogs at first as they are not used to having to search that high up. As she was saying that, Angus figured out where the odour was and put his head into the box. The instructor says, "...Or make a liar out of me!"

I am very proud of my boy. <33333

Aw, that's so awesome!! You'll have to post some videos! I came so close to taking a nosework class with Rhaegar this term (I've heard that it's a great sport for dogs that lack a little confidence), but I have my licensing exam, the NAVLE, at the end of November, so I went with a less time consuming/easier class. I *should* be studying non-stop for the next six weeks! Good luck with Angus, that sounds like a lot of fun!

oh, nosework is so much fun! Yogi has his first trial on Oct. 31st and Lillie will start Nosework 1 in Nov.

You will learn so much about your dog as you go and the dogs just have a blast!

I really don't have many good pictures... I will try to ask another person to get a video/pictures next week!

...But here are a few pictures from the first two weeks!

HAHA I love the pictures of Angus crated. He looks like such a king on his big, soft pillow. I find his cruciate bothers him most when he's having to lay on hard surfaces, so I also bring his pillow so that he stays super comfortable while the other dogs are in the other room doing their searches. :)

I have been thinking about it for so long now! Angus has always loved problem solving. All of his toys are puzzle toys and we have always played scent based games. Plus, with his cruciate injury, it's the perfect low-impact activity for him.

There are a number of really shy and cautious dogs. It's amazing to see the transformation. They are really starting to come out of their shells and get into the game.

Awesome! Good luck to you and your pups! I can't wait for Angus to be good enough to enter a trial. :)

We moved off of boxes yesterday. Some of the odours were in PVC piping, magnetically attached to items along the perimeter of the building and in the centre hole of cinder blocks. Angus was very good. We hadn't worked off of boxes, so he was a little thrown off having to search inside tubes, through a tarp on the ground, along the walls, but he caught on VERY quickly. That was the last class of this set of sessions. We are signed up for the next set and we will start doing vehicle searches! Very excited for this!!!!

Vehicle searches are really fun. For some reason Yogi does really well with those. I think you will like them!Funny story came to mind after reading that you moved off boxes to other searches; about 3 weeks into our first session, my boyfriend took Yogi over to a friends house who was packing up to move. Yogi walked in the house, saw all those boxes and went NUTS! Running through the house shoving his face in every box he saw. He has a deep and profound love of boxes now that I don't think will ever fade, lol!

Hahaha that's hilarious!!

Angus is very methodical. He doesn't race through like the lab does in our class. He takes his time and searches each box until he finds the odour. You can tell he loves it though cause his tail is wagging, his eyes light up and after we find the odour and are going back to his crate, he searches each box a second time... Just in case something changed! Haha

I have the same issue until I get to know people. I usually bring my kiddo to our classes, so she gets stuck video-ing or taking pictures. I have had to pay her... she gets so tired of me and my "dog" stuff, lol!

That's funny! Slightly ::eek:ff topic:: I watched a documentary last night (forget the title, I'm horrible about that) but basically a University set up a study that involved paying 9th graders $50 to get all C's or better. If they did, they would also get a chance to win $500. They brought up their passing students by 7%-10% or something like that. It's all about the incentives, kids and dog training included. If the incentives are good enough you can get ______ ,to pretty much do anything.
