Looking into getting a Cane Corso Pup

Hello everyone,

I am currently in the process of attempting to find a good quality breeder for Cane Corso pups. After about 1.5 of research where I went back and forth between boerboel, presa, and CC, I eventually decided on CC being the right breed for me. Now I am attempting to find a good breeder who will both support me after purchase as well as help me before making the purchase. I have researched a few different breeders (I am located in the Niagara region, ON). I am willing to make a drive should I have too, but if I can find something closer that would definitely help. I have found two breeders that may fit the bill for what I am looking at Castle Guard and Darkstone, and both seem great. If anyone has any experience with either or may be able to point me somewhere that would be great.

I am looking at getting the dog anywhere from Octoberish-up to a year from now if need be.

Thanks

There aren't a whole lot of breeders up here in Canada that are doing the responsible thing but in this breed because the consistency is still all over the place as far as type. So know what you want your corso to look like and find a kennel that has those dogs and is one that is doing things right. Be very careful of looking for corsi in Ontario as there are some that are breed some unhealthy lines, not just in Ontario anymore but that is where it began and the lines are still be ing used.I think there are a couple owners on here that have dogs from Castleguard so maybe they will chime in with their experiences.

Cheers and let us know if you have any questions we can help with. :)

marco40.jpgMy 6 month old Pup came from Shauna at Castleguard. The experience of dealing with Shauna was a pleasure, and we are very happy with out terrific male pup. He has a terrific temperment, smart, and lives with 3 Yorkshire Terriers.

Ha, we're looking at the same breeders. Im not sure when I will get my first CC pup, but I am doing the research now. Definitely not limiting my search to Canada, tho there are some nice breeders here.

Have you gone to any of the Corso shows? I haven't but am thinking of going to the one in Vegas this fall.

Thanks for the input from everyone. Mary, I looked into a few breeders in Ontario the dogs did not seem of the same quality at any of the breeders. I am no expert, but they did not have the same appearance nor the same detail that went into their site with regards to explaining who they are and what they want to do with the breed. I know a pure bred dog is a huge investment, and as such I want to make sure I am getting the best dog I can.

Do you have any recommendations on where to start or am I looking in the same direction.

@Shodan, how long after you contacted them did they get back to you. Do they offer lifetime support as in if I have a question email them no problem?

Shauna always got back to me, always took the time to talk to me, email back, and yes, lifetime support. She may be busy this summer with shows, but just give her a call and leave a message. I know she has several pups available, and a new littler coming sometime in mid July. Smart that you are researching. If I get another Corso, it will be from Castleguard and Shauna. SHe picked out the perfect pup for what we were looking for. Smart, loving, protective, good with our Yorkies, and a wonderful pup.

I know the Osings and have met most of their dogs.
Darkstone Kennels is a very reputable kennel. They do not breed for profit, they breed rarely and will always take back their dogs, offer life time support, health test their dogs and place by temperament and suitability. Betty is currently the president of the Cane Corso parent breed club for the CKC, and is actively showing her dogs in Canada and the US. They are putting on a CC booster at the August show here in Calgary and I am helping them out with a CGN test in 2 weeks at a different show. I really liked their last litter, they got some great pups out of it. I have a few friends with dogs from DS, some where on my computer I have some pictures of a dog walk with 3 DS and 2 CG dogs... Oh and my girl :)
They mainly have American lines as their foundation, but have also imported some semen from European studs.
I have also met quite a few Castle Guard dogs, and have spoken to Shauna a few times.
The dogs I have met are great dogs, and the owners have said nothing but good things when dealing with her.
Hope that helps.

@Kelly, from what I can see I do not believe here are any CC in Eastern Canada showing in CKC events besides one male from del'ecousse in Halifax. Paul may have more then one out now.

LOL! Hemi is mama's baby :) And I wouldn't trade that black tank for anything! :) Her personalty suits me perfectly and it what had me falling in love with the breed.

Paul's male is showing CKC and I think the European ones will be in the ring once their CKC #s arrive. There is also a male from EM Cane Corso that is just waiting to sort out his paperwork AKC to CKC and then he will be showing as well I believe. With the exception of the puppy all have CFC Championships I believe and now are going to be heading out to do their CKC :) So there should be a couple corsi hitting the CKC ring on this side now :) We always have lots of fun at the shows so if you get a chance to hang out with a corso crowd at a show do so. We are all generally friends and there aren't too many of us that don't love to talk about our dogs. ;)

Sorry who is Paul?

Where and when is this show in August? I know you said Calgary, what is the venue? What is the name of the show? Do you know which kennels wil be there?

sorry for all the questions, I was going to go to Vegas in November, but Calgary is easier for me, logistically and financially.

Sorry Paul owns Del Ecoussee Cane Corso in NS.

that is the show in Calgary that is having the booster.

I think if it is the ones that have been showing out there that you will see dogs from Dark Stone Cane Corso, Octane San Manifique (he is an import that has been doing well from Khylor Rottweilers) as well as a couple of Castleguard dogs. I am not sure if any will be showing from Larco Cane Corso or not.

The show here is at Spruce Meadows is put on by the Alberta Kennel Club.
It is a huge show, one of the biggest out door shows in Canada. And the venue is stunning. Not sure if you are familiar with Spruce Meadows, is an equestrian venue, world renowned. It is a a lot of fun, and makes for such a good show.
Not sure the numbers yet, I know there will be dogs from the following kennels; Darkstone, Castleguard, Sangue Manifique (I assume), Pride'n'joyz, Del'Agreste, Heatwave... Should be a fun show. A bunch of folks have trailers there so there will be some late night CC folk having cocktails. The Booster is on Saturday.
Too bad you can't come, it should be a blast!
You are going to the SACCI show in November?

Im planning on it, just trying to find someone to come with me. No one I know is as into dogs as I am , but it IS Vegas so that's a draw in itself. Are you going to that one?

Probably not the SACCI show.
We are planning on heading out East to the CCAA Nationals in PA next spring and NYC to see some friends and dogs.
