How extreme are fila brasileiros?

From what i hear they don't tolerate any strangers, unless raised with them. But how extreme are these guys, when someone comes knocking at your door, or a stranger walks in your house and your dog is the only one home, pizza guy walks in... All that stuff, i also heard someone on this forum say their fila tries to break through the window to get at people outside. Are these dog's more of " keep the person away from the property", or " you will not leave alive, to the pizza guy"? I'm not getting a fila btw, well not as my first mastiff breed that's for sure.

Do a search, there is a LOT of info that's been discussed at length about it.

If someone walked in my house unannounced with Athena in there, they'd leave with a few more holes than they entered with.... but Kronos would bite an intruder as well.... this is a little more accurate.... if a girl scout came up to me and Athena on a walk around the block, and got to close.... bad news bears...more like my bear on the news...

Out of curiosity, why so interested in the Fila temperament if you don't plan to get one? I only ask because you've started a thread like this recently.

Nobody and i mean NOBODY makes it past my front gate without an escort, with 5 filas there is at least one watching, so i dont have to worry about someone coming into my house unexpected.

WinterSpring, i used to want one, was my first mastiff that i was interested in after the French mastiff. I was told Fila's aren't for me, and i wholeheartedly agree. I love the look and the attitude of the Fila, that's why i wanted to know, i never knew a dog breed could be so protective to their owners. I got way over my head with all this, so i decided it wasn't for me, i didn't want a dog i'm not ready for, i would never him/her up, but at the same time, have never had a mastiff.

MountainFila I'm guessing this is a social breed with love for their "pack", looks like your dog's don't mind each other at all they're beaut.

My pack consists of mom, dad and their 3, 9 month old pups from my last litter, they all get along very well, as did all the filas i had in the past. Im not your average fila owner as i take my dogs were ever i go, i dont believe in having a protection dog that cant be takin with you so it can do its job, kind of defeats the purpose of having them. I do not have alot of company but when the odd person shows up to visit, the dogs are put away at first then the person comes in then the dogs are let out with instructions to the person to not talk to or look at or pet them, they come out sniff them a few times and then they go lay down and watch the person. If they start talking with there hands or speaking to loudly the dogs let them know by barking at them, if the people stand up all my dogs stand up at the same time, i dont have many visitors hahahaha and these are people the dogs have seen since birth. And just because i can take my filas with me and have people over doesnt mean they dont bite or have true fila temp, it means they are trained and i have control.

I agree with you and MF. I believe that Filas are more than capable of behaving in this manner. That being said I think both of you are above average dog trainers. My dogs are perfect house dogs but to go outside and OT is not my calling in life. If I had gotten into Filas when I was younger I think I would have approached it differently but to be honest by the time I got Cane I finally had a little something and I don't want to be sued and lose what little I do have.

Filas that trust their owners instincts and commands regarding "strangers" tend to be the most intelligent and least likely to buckle under real perceived threat pressure. Much of that is training and much is genetics. Mountain has her dogs trained but they are also intelligent. There are some dumb ass Filas out there and some with strong ojeriza the combination of the two is not good news. How many people here have ever tried to train a bloodhound?
