My oldest daughter is getting married in June. We're trying to find a good father-daughter dance song. It can't be something too sappy. Nothing country. Dad is a blue collar, rock and roll guy, but he also likes oldies and blues. Colleen is very sentimental when it comes to her dad. She doesn't want anything that will ruin her make-up, but she does want something with meaning. I should also mention that Dad isn't a good dancer. Truth is that he doesn't dance. He and I have slow danced exactly one time in the 27 years we've been together . So it must be something easy to dance to. He hates Elton John and he's not overly fond of The Beatles. Which is a shame, because I can think of a few songs that would be great. So ... please give me some ideas. I've already suggested Stand By Me, and Colleen didn't seem like she wanted that.
To help you get to know my girl better, I'm going to share a poem she wrote me for my birthday a few years ago. She sent it as "just a little thing that maybe I would like." It might help get a feeling for the things she obviously felt were special. I hope I don't screww up the spacing too badly.
Where I'm From
I am from my mother
My mother, the hedgewitch,
From Bag End built in the front yard, tiny picket fence and all
From home grown herbs drying upside down in the crababpple tree
From Kansas, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Journey, Jethro Tull, and the Beatles
I am from lasagna on special occasions with extra parmesan cheese
From bike riding, pogo-stick jumping, rollerblading on summer afternoons
I am from "Hey, born in a barn!" when I don't close the door and the cultivation of my own mind
despite the narrow parochial point of view in my Catholic school education
From "Think for yourself, don't believe everything they say."
I am from my father
My father, the handyman, the pipe fitter, the genius who can fix anything and everything
From the smell of cut wood and sawdust and bright metal, the sound of hammer striking nail
From denim shirts and the backwards cloth hat that always meant it was time for work
From pencils tucked behind ears and glasses that covered half your face
I am from fishing on a summer day: bluegill, perch, catfish, and if I am very lucky, bass
From bacon, eggs, toast, and orange juice on Sunday mornings after church
From Metallica, Godsmack, Van Halen, Black Sabbath
I am from corny jokes, math puns, the ability to make a song out of any words and any melody
I am from love, from humor, from understanding, from people who encourage me
To be me
So that's my girl. Please help us find a great song for her to dance to with her dad.
