Help! We need help finding a father-daughter dance song

My oldest daughter is getting married in June. We're trying to find a good father-daughter dance song. It can't be something too sappy. Nothing country. Dad is a blue collar, rock and roll guy, but he also likes oldies and blues. Colleen is very sentimental when it comes to her dad. She doesn't want anything that will ruin her make-up, but she does want something with meaning. I should also mention that Dad isn't a good dancer. Truth is that he doesn't dance. He and I have slow danced exactly one time in the 27 years we've been together . So it must be something easy to dance to. He hates Elton John and he's not overly fond of The Beatles. Which is a shame, because I can think of a few songs that would be great. So ... please give me some ideas. I've already suggested Stand By Me, and Colleen didn't seem like she wanted that.

To help you get to know my girl better, I'm going to share a poem she wrote me for my birthday a few years ago. She sent it as "just a little thing that maybe I would like." It might help get a feeling for the things she obviously felt were special. I hope I don't screww up the spacing too badly.

Where I'm From

I am from my mother
My mother, the hedgewitch,
From Bag End built in the front yard, tiny picket fence and all
From home grown herbs drying upside down in the crababpple tree
From Kansas, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Journey, Jethro Tull, and the Beatles
I am from lasagna on special occasions with extra parmesan cheese
From bike riding, pogo-stick jumping, rollerblading on summer afternoons
I am from "Hey, born in a barn!" when I don't close the door and the cultivation of my own mind
despite the narrow parochial point of view in my Catholic school education
From "Think for yourself, don't believe everything they say."

I am from my father
My father, the handyman, the pipe fitter, the genius who can fix anything and everything
From the smell of cut wood and sawdust and bright metal, the sound of hammer striking nail
From denim shirts and the backwards cloth hat that always meant it was time for work
From pencils tucked behind ears and glasses that covered half your face
I am from fishing on a summer day: bluegill, perch, catfish, and if I am very lucky, bass
From bacon, eggs, toast, and orange juice on Sunday mornings after church
From Metallica, Godsmack, Van Halen, Black Sabbath
I am from corny jokes, math puns, the ability to make a song out of any words and any melody
I am from love, from humor, from understanding, from people who encourage me
To be me

So that's my girl. Please help us find a great song for her to dance to with her dad.

Thanks, AB. I thought her "little something" was special enough to frame.

All great suggestions, tmricciuto. I think she's looking for something less conventional. I think My Girl and Stand By Me would be perfect, but she wants something ... different. And I'm at a loss. Keep suggestions coming please! I'll make her a mix and send it to her. Maybe she just needs to actually hear some of the songs.

The Beyonce song is definitely not what I would call traditional. Good luck and let us know what she lands on.

Wow! She sounds like a wonderful and talented woman with very fond memories of her childhood. Not sure about a song but I agree about music with the poem about her dad with maybe some words from him and his memories?

No, that one is definitely not traditional. But she'd bawl her eyes out. I know her. And so would I. I don't cry, so I'm not a pretty crier. Hahaha. Thank you for the suggestions.

Sweet child of mine is awesome. Also, Photograph by Ed Sheeran is one of the best songs i have heard in the last couple if years, and i think would work great, although it might make you cry.

I don't know who we're trying to fool. We're going to cry. It's inevitable. I'm passing along all suggestions to her. Thank you all so much. We really appreciate it. Keep 'em coming please!

Well, I think she's found the perfect song. Unfortunately she can't get past the fact that it's country and her dad doesn't care for country. Trace Adkins, Just Fishin'. It really is perfect. Unless there's a song out there about pounding nails with your dad, lol.

Yes there will be tears. I'd bet even from Dad - really no avoiding it. Do they have a song that means something to both of them or Dad's favorite song that she to sing learned early on? Personally I love nontraditional - has more meaning that way.

I loved her first by Heartland, absolutely perfect for father/ daughter dance.

Play the Heartland Quiz
"I Loved Her First"

Look at the two of you dancing that way
Lost in the moment and each other's face
So much in love you're alone in this place
Like there's nobody else in the world
I was enough for her not long ago
I was her number one
She told me so
And she still means the world to me
Just so you know
So be careful when you hold my girl
Time changes everything
Life must go on
And I'm not gonna stand in your way

But I loved her first and I held her first
And a place in my heart will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But it's still hard to give her away
I loved her first

How could that beautiful woman with you
Be the same freckle-faced kid that I knew
The one that I read all those fairy tales to?
And tucked into bed all those nights?
And I knew the first time I saw you with her
It was only a matter of time

But I loved her first and I held her first
And a place in my heart will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But it's still hard to give her away
I loved her first

From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
Someday you might know what I'm going through
When a miracle smiles up at you
I loved her first

One bonus, Just Fishin would be easy to dance to. Just sway back and forth in a circle. :) Great song.

Thank you all for the suggestions. They really are all wonderful choices. None of them have really spoken to her except Just Fishin'. I'm pushing her for that one. It really is perfect, she wants it, and I think Dad can deal with a country song for his first baby girl. And like you say, dpenning, it's easy-peasy to dance to. Exactly what we're looking for.

I wanted to thank everyone again for their thoughtful suggestions. She's picked their song. I think it's the perfect choice.
