Don't you hate when that happens?! Bc of Kris I've now added GDs to my dream list. Lol
I was actually just looking at DD's thread about the different kinds of Danes and I must say it crossed my mind but my Boyfriend would never EVER go for that lol. He thought a 100lb dog was too much in the house.

I'm taking care of a GD this weekend & I think it's going to be the deciding factor whether or not the breed stays on my list. I love pet sitting for dogs I think I want bc it's like experiencing what life would be like with those dogs then deciding, ehh not for me or yes this is awesome!

This is my first GD but I am so in love with him. He and Ruger are SO different as puppies and although Ruger is the perfect dog, Magnum and his very different energy and personality, won me over quickly. :)

Great list, can't do Newfs or Berners as my husband's allergies can't handle it.

I have been around Labs for a long time. I do love them but I won't get another one after Petey. I have shown them, worked them in hunt training, and bred them (although I never produced a litter, Petey was a stud dog for a service dogs organization). They are a lot of work and they can have a lot of problems. Very high energy, often too high even for my kids and they shed like a bugger. Don't believe that whole average shedder myth about them. These are heavy shedders. We brush Petey daily when he is blowing coat (which happens 2 to 3 times a year) and we have to sweep twice a day or we have tumbleweeds of hair floating around the house. But they can be great dogs if you enjoy the energy and since you want a Newf and a Berner, the hair probably wouldn't bother you.

My husband can't breathe during two or three weeks of the year. During that time, he always says, "This is it. I hate to do this to him but Petey has to go. I can't breathe and he is going to kill me with his hair." I always nod and say, okay, I'll put an ad up and contact a lab rescue. Then I wait patiently while he gripes for the few weeks. Finally, at the end of the allergy period, he always comes up and says, "Cancel that ad. I could never get rid of my boy."

It is a yearly ritual we have and even Petey knows it. He is usually glued to my husband but during those 2 to 3 weeks, he parks himself by my desk day in and day out until the allergies are gone. I think he knows and feels awful about it. LOL. Daisy's hair and the cat's hair doesn't bother him.
We had a lab x newfs should have seen the hair in my place!! Omg loved him but the hair was just overwhelming. (Sam passed july 2012)

I can imagine! Lol and that is why the only 2 dogs on my list are Newf and Berner and it is so hard in my mind to imagine that hair in my house because I have never had a long hair dog before. Even my short hair dogs when they are shedding drives me nuts.

I had for a little but I have met a couple of St Bernards over the years and something about them turned me off. I think out of the 6 I had met and spent a little time with 4 were dog aggressive to dogs outside of their household. 3 of the 4 would attack small dogs and 4 of the dogs the owners did not trust off leash outside of their yard. They said they found them unpredictable. Now maybe it was the owner of these dogs that weren't dog savy or trained past puppyhood I don't know.

This is typical of saints from dogs that have been overbred. Ever since the movie Beethoven came out, saints being overbred is becoming very common. Its a shame because saints from responsible breeders are so good natured and great with other dogs. The other reason for this behaviour could have been poor training from owners, saints are notorious for being hard to train and easy to spook if people train them harshly.
