Choices, Choices and a NEVER ending list

Though it won't be for a couple years I am sure.
....
All this knowledge I have been learning about Mastiffs is driving me into Puppy Pandemonium! Here are my narrowed down breeds that I have shown interest in and that I cannot get out of my head. (Not all are Mastiffs Breeds and in no specific order)

Tosa Inu(Fairly new)
DDB (Always interested in this breed since Teen hood)
Dogo(This one is a recent addition)
Newfoundland (I am not usually a "Fluffy" dog person, but I cannot resist all the traits I have read. Inc: Child friendly)
Labrador(This is because of my Boyfriends preference, Too much energy for me...I don't really like Sporting group dogs)
Bernese Mountain ( Again "fluffy" but like the Newf I like the sounds of them although the Health issues....)

Well that's the list for now although I am pretty sure it will grow/change in the next couple months. I also should let my Boyfriend have the ultimate decisions because I kinda gave him absolutely no choice when it came to Barron... but he has admitted himself that he wouldn't know what to do if we did not have him! That is when he is behaving lol.

Newfs and Berners are a whole lotta grooming! They are on my dream list too :)
I know and that is one of the reasons I am turned off by anything "Fluffy". BUt they are the top 2 for liking children and from the ones I have met are big couch potatoes in the house and I LOVE that. Plus the Newfs have water engrained in them (Though this is not sure fire water dog with out some training). *sigh* I love the look too.

Great list, can't do Newfs or Berners as my husband's allergies can't handle it.

I have been around Labs for a long time. I do love them but I won't get another one after Petey. I have shown them, worked them in hunt training, and bred them (although I never produced a litter, Petey was a stud dog for a service dogs organization). They are a lot of work and they can have a lot of problems. Very high energy, often too high even for my kids and they shed like a bugger. Don't believe that whole average shedder myth about them. These are heavy shedders. We brush Petey daily when he is blowing coat (which happens 2 to 3 times a year) and we have to sweep twice a day or we have tumbleweeds of hair floating around the house. But they can be great dogs if you enjoy the energy and since you want a Newf and a Berner, the hair probably wouldn't bother you.

My husband can't breathe during two or three weeks of the year. During that time, he always says, "This is it. I hate to do this to him but Petey has to go. I can't breathe and he is going to kill me with his hair." I always nod and say, okay, I'll put an ad up and contact a lab rescue. Then I wait patiently while he gripes for the few weeks. Finally, at the end of the allergy period, he always comes up and says, "Cancel that ad. I could never get rid of my boy."

It is a yearly ritual we have and even Petey knows it. He is usually glued to my husband but during those 2 to 3 weeks, he parks himself by my desk day in and day out until the allergies are gone. I think he knows and feels awful about it. LOL. Daisy's hair and the cat's hair doesn't bother him.

Looks like a great list of breeds. I will say that if I absolutely had no choice but to choose between a BMD & a Newfie, I would pick the BMD. While still fluffy, it seems like they have a little less fluff compared to the Newf. When I was a professional groomer I had a Newf that came in for bath & brush outs every 6-8 weeks. If she missed even one appointment, I would spend 30 minutes on each leg & an hour per side brushing this dog's undercoat out. Now I know there are Newfs that don't have as much hair, but I feel like this dog was a true Newfie. She was an absolute sweetheart & didn't mind the endless brushing & pulling so I can't complain there. I would just be prepared for brushing maintenance at home if you went with either of those breeds.

The more I see DDBs I like them. I don't think I would personally have one but I think they are great dogs nonetheless. And I have some minimal experience with Dogos. They were used strictly for hunting & took their jobs seriously. Except for one. He was a big lover & I nick named him meat head. He could care less about hogs & ultimately was given away due to his desire to lay on a couch instead of chase hogs but one thing I couldn't tolerate with him was his short prickly hair. My allergies are sensitive to dogs that have shorter than lab short hair & usually I break out in hives all over my arms & chest if I get near them. :(

Duke used to be ridiculous for hair everywhere. You could not pet him with out ending up with a mitt full of hair. After convincing Matt to put him on a quality food he hardly sheds except spring.

I have friends that have gone through the whole Lab puppy thing and I have seen first hand how CRAZY they are unitl 3 years old and than they mellow out. We have Duke but my Boyfriends rescued him at 4 years old so most of his craziness was gone by then although he was a runner.... still is as he has a prey drive. One sniff of a coyote or deer/or he sees a squirrel and he is gone. He will return eventually once he loses interest. I dunno just not one for them.... I also do not like popular breeds. Lets face it LABS are EVERYWHERE! Matt really wants to when the time comes replace are old lab with a Lab. I am trying to talk him out of it but ultimately like I said. His choice.

See and that is what I heard abo9ut the Newfs they are pretty much bomb proof once socialised. Tugging, laying, petting all good.

DDB's that I have met are sweet hearts. People friendly and love their kids.

It is going to be such a hard choice.

Dang you! Now you have me looking at Newfie breeders even though my husband has made it perfectly clear that we will not be bringing another puppy home any time soon.

I would just tell him if he's gonna keep knocking you up then you're gonna keep bringing puppies home! ;)

I might have to try this haha. My definition of when we'll be ready (and it will kill me to wait this long) is 2-3 years tops and a good part of that is because I want to develop a relationship with the breeder. He thinks we need to wait 10ish years til the ones we have pass away. Men I tell ya!

Mateo has a Bernese friend, as well as a Newf buddy-- great dogs! But I agree about the hair; my friend's, Newf, Nero, would take hours to dry and groom if he was completely soaked.

I prefer the quick towel rub, then good to go. :)

(Below, Mateo @ 3 months; and then @ 8-9 months.)
