What Kind of Dog is That?

Before joining this forum or getting into mastiffs, I really don't know that I would have known what kind of dog Franklin was...I probably would have guessed lab/EM cross (don't hate me for that haha!). And I consider myself to be pretty dog savvy...yikes. And I don't know that I've seen a TM in person, but probably would have guessed a Leonberger too!

When we first brought our EM home, I was holding her outside one day and someone asked me if she was a PUG! I almost died.

I get big pit pull when some people see Titan. Surprisingly, I have had 2 people ask if he was a mastiff but they didn't know which one.

We get shar pei and sharpei x alot with our 10 week old EM pup. Our
Bullastiff is often labelled a pit bull a really big boxer or an English bullmastiff. Massive irritates me to no end and some had a rockweiler that looked just like my bullmaster...

Well, I guess I tended to relate every dog to a lab without knowing better, and Franklin's face (at least from your avatar) doesn't yet have the jowliness that I would have associated with the typical "Sandlot" mastiff. The size and color would have been where I came up with mastiff. Am I digging myself into a deeper hole??? I love Franklin by the way.

Barron (RottXMastiff)- I am actually really shocked because people NEVER say Rottweiler. They always ask if he is a Mastiff. To me this is shocking because to Mastiff Owner eyes he looks a little like a Mastiff with his jowels and wrinkles but Not a Pure Mastiff. I always say Rott mastiff cross. Than when they ask I say I don't really know what mastiff breed I think Tosa which than I have to explain what a Tosa is. Lol it is great fun!

I get it quite a bit with my two - some people know they are the "Turner and Hooch" dog, but most don't. I've even gotten into the habit of calling them French Mastiffs (which I hate saying) because when I tell people they are a Dogue de Bordeaux, they just look at me like I just grew a second head.

As puppies, people have called mine Golden Retrievers, Pugs, Bloodhounds, Shar-Peis, Boxers..etc.

What I thought was really funny was I had Fhalyn and Bub at the dog park last night. Bub was in the car (it wasn't very hot, the only reason he got to go - with all the windows down). I took the baby in and she played for a few minutes with some guys playing Frisbee. There weren't really any dogs that wanted to play with her, so I put her in the car and let Bub out to walk him around on leash for a few minutes outside the park. As the guys were leaving, one asked how much bigger Bub was gonna get - he had confused him for Fhalyn!! I mean I know they are the same color, but he's a good 5 inches taller and at least 85lbs heavier (not mention he has manly parts and she was wearing a pink collar while his is brown). Sometimes I can't believe how unobservant people are!!

What I also think is funny is when people don't even know what kind of dog they have - there was a couple with a EM about a year old at the dog park who were telling people he was a BM. I wasn't going to argue with him, but I would have bet $500 he was an EM! They'd had him since he was 6 wks old (so obviously not from a reputable breeder) and they were griping because he wasn't bigger (another pet peeve of mine). He was a good sized boy - I'm guessing at least 29in and prob. 160ish - in good lean condition.

This stuff is too hilarious!

Rockweiler is my fave, but the one that takes the cake, and I see this written on Craig's List all the time, is a "Pibble" pup for adoption.

I get this quite often too.
"wow! look at the size of that pit!" :lolbangtable:
it's ok though, we play a game with Kujo, we pull back the skin on on his face and he DOES look like a pit...then we smush it all up and he looks like a shar pei! we play with his face a lot..

You said you love him, so you're off the hook. :)

Pibble is done on purpose, i think an attenpt to soften the name and the stigma.

I'm always asked what IT!! is,after they have to tell me what they think first. The usual guesses are, fat boxer!! , American bulldog or "its a illegal pitty ain't it!!". When I say BM I get " oh Yeh was just gonna say that!'

Kryten has gotten a wide range of breeds as he has grown. There are 3 that really stick out though Newfoundland and Saint Bernard. The third is a woman who asks every time she sees him if I regret not docking my Rottweilers tail yet.

Ha, the "massive" comments kill me- and I hear that a lot.

Mostly, I get Bull Mastiff/Massive; Shar-Pei; or just Mastiff. But the Shar-Pei kills me; people see the wrinkles and that's it for them; he is a Shar-Pei, no doubt... Never mind that there is about a 100 pound difference between them, and the face structure is waaaay off.

Some people ask, but don't really want to know. Like the person walking by on a cell phone asks what breed he is, I tell them French Mastiff, and they keep walking and continue on their conversation. Some people really DO want to know what Mateo's breed is, the history, etc. I can see them making a mental note to hit up Google later...

I do love it, though, when a French tourist (a lot of them here this summer) pronounces "Dogue de Bordeaux" with the perfect French accent, as they stop to pet my dog... :)

I like when people ask what breed Kryten is and after I tell them English Mastiff they respond by saying he certainly is massive. Clearly they heard English Massive.

Yet again last night I got asked if Sully was a sharpei x....he has one forehead roll. Then, another seeming fellow asked if he was a mastiff...I said Yes!! He then proceeded to mention how mastiffs were the shorter, stockier mastiff...with bullmastiffs being much larger....
