What Kind of Dog is That?

On the rare occasion I take Franklin out, or when we are sitting outside, he draws a lot of attention. Everyone who sees him asks what kind of dog he is. I think EMs, Neos, and bull mastiffs are pretty distinguishable by their size and faces.
Do you get that question a lot too? I'm curious simply because I don't think these dogs are particularly rare, but no one seems to know what they are.
I have to admit that before i joined this forum, I had no idea what a fila, presa or TM were so had I seen one, I would have asked the same question.

Our B&T TM (Zeus) has been called a Newfoundland, Bernese Mountain Dog, long haired rottweiler and the most insulting.....a GSD Cross! :)
And now we have our new boy (Hades) we're waiting to see what weird and wonderful combinations we get for him. So far we haven't had any guesses but people keep asking if he's going to go dark like Zeus....WTF?!

I think they are a bit more rare than we might think in most areas. Most people that have guessed Mastiff with Ruger have guessed Bull Mastiff or Bull "massive" because they really don't know anything about the different types and think all mastiffs are Bull. I have had ruger guessed as a Great Dane MANY times when he was in his gangly stage and even a St. Bernard once (WTH?) but at this point since he has started to fill out I just get "WOW, he is huge, what kind is he?" LOL

Non-dog people ask if Apollo's a Saint Bernard cross........

Dog people ask if he's a Leonburger..........

And don't get me started on what people think Arty is!

What do they think Arty is???

"I didn't know you could cross foxes with dogs!!"

When he was still a round little pup I had one lady who was CONVINCED he was the tiniest Akita pup she'd ever met (and she would not listen to anything I said).

The more dog savvy folks ask if he's a Basenji or Shiba cross.

I get the question a lot regarding my BMs. Non-dog lovers typically have no clue. Boxer is the most common guess from such people.

Those having a little dog knowledge (but not a lot) guess EM.

Just recently, I had a man ask me if my 8-week old BM puppy was a Shar-pei.

If you cross a fox and a dog, do you get a low hanging cloud bank with bad visibility?

while out with Flower I get Bloodhound,Redbone and Rhodesian!
when Flower was about a year,I had her in Petstupid and a woman
comes running up all excited to see a dog that may be her dogs
littermate, her exact words!!I asked if she got her dog from Deer Graze,
she looks stumped and says no I got her from the shelter!I explained that
Flower is a Fila an did not come from a shelter, she didn't skip a beat telling
me, um no,FLower is a redbone mix like her baby!!???hahahaha!!!!

I had Maddie in my front yard the other morning while I had my morning hot tea
and woman walking by asked why I had such a mean Great Dane and why was she
so fat and short??!!! on a different day,a man walking 2 Boxers,1 brindle and 1 fawn
commented,he had never seen a Boxer so thick and with such a long snout!!???!!
claimed he has had Boxers for 17yrs and up until 4yrs ago he also bred them!!!

Our fawn BMs got boxer (especially when they were young and went through the lanky phase) and "massive," and never did they guess BM. People would say that my dog sure looked small for a "massive," because their cousin had one that was 200 pounds. Sometimes I'd try to explain about English versus bull, but usually I'd just say, "Oh. Hmm."

My very dark, almost black brindle 165-pound BM got no guesses whatsoever, lol. People usually just crossed to the other side of the street....

Wow. I thought people asking if Franklin is a pit was shocking lol

I love the people who will argue like I don't know what kind of dog I have. :razzberry:

We've run the gambit on guesses. A fair number of people guess Mastiff, and then proceed to say Junior's on the small side... And then I have to educate them on the many different types of Mastiffs. And then they just kinda stare at me. As a pup he was always called "some kind of boxer, shar-pei mix". He's a Bullmastiff "Bull massive?" Yes.

At a dog park one day, I had a sweet older lady ask me what breed my dogs were. When I responded Bullmastiff, some man standing nearby piped up and told her that the breed was originally a cross between an English Mastiff and an English Bull Dog. I politely corrected him by saying that it was the Old English Bulldog – a breed that is now extinct, not the breed most people today are familiar with -- but he insisted that I was wrong. I just smiled and said, "whatever you say."

Before joining this forum or getting into mastiffs, I really don't know that I would have known what kind of dog Franklin was...I probably would have guessed lab/mastiff cross (don't hate me for that haha!). And I consider myself to be pretty dog savvy...yikes. And I don't know that I've seen a TM in person, but probably would have guessed a Leonberger too!

When we first brought our EM home, I was holding her outside one day and someone asked me if she was a PUG! I almost died.
