What breed has been the most vicious/aggresive?

Even the pit types that have been bred for dog aggression aren't bred for human aggression which is why they can work as therapy dogs as long as the handler keeps them away from other dogs. You don't channel aggression into therapy work.

Exactly. I said that earlier. It is drive, intelligence and energy that is channeled into service work. That is why Labrador Retrievers are frequently the go to breed for service work...they have all three.

Well said Ruth.

WRT therapy work, I dunno that drive plays much of a role in it. If anything you have to totally squash a dog's drives for therapy work. Its all about good nerves, bidability, and temperament. I also don't think intelligence places much of a role in it either... Service dogs, sure, but not therapy work.

So kadmos, what type of aggression do you mean? Dog aggression? Human aggression? Animal aggression? Territorial aggression? Social aggression?

I haven't liked Chihuahuas since I was a kid. We had one in our neighborhood who was owned by a nice First Nations family. Her daughter was a good friend but the dog was not. Actually, they would take him with them when they were hauling in the nets and he would eat fish guts. Then he would come back, completely covered in fish gore, and run up and down the street growling and snarling at the kids.

It was always freaky seeing him when I was alone. No one would be around and I would turn a corner and find this blood stained dog standing in front of me giving me the evil eye. Then his white teeth would start showing and he would lunge.

Funny though, he would be the sweetest thing if I saw him at his home after a bath. I think the fish guts made him crazy. LOL.
This made me laugh northernmastiff, especially the part about him becoming the sweetest dog after he got the fish guys washed off! But u guys r right chihuahuas and poms are like Lil devil dogs! =)

I've seen it be focused into a drive to be with and comfort people. It doesn't work for all dogs, there's got to be a want to be with people in the first place, but I've seen it done with the right dogs. I've even seen TMs trained as therapy dogs, that drive to protect apparently can make an awesome comforter in the dog who's willing to work with strangers.

I meant dog aggression but territorial and social aggression types will also work.

For dog aggression, I meant the type that are vicious in the sense that they would attack people that are members of their owners' family.

Also, I mean in the context that they can be very vicious because it stems from the fact that their breed has been bred for fighting.

dude, you have no idea what you're talking about. A dog that'll attack family.....thats not aggression, thats purely unstable dog.

And social aggression?? And you think you can turn that into a therapy dog??

What Ruth said. Little dumbfounded right now by your post Kadmos1. Definitely think you are trolling with that.

By the way, APBT's do not attack family members, it is unstable, improperly bred and raised APBT's that attack their family members.

I was referring to all this in terms of what the most vicious Mastiff-type breed people have encountered that would be the type that they wouldn't exactly buy because it was highly aggressive.

I know that this is a stretch, however, I like the idea of trying to channel such a highly aggressive Mastiff breed into being used for a therapy/service dog.

You don't want a mastiff you want a Hyena. i get a sense you want something like a wild dog that is only social when forced to be so by it's pack leader. I actually hope you don't own any dogs at this point.
