• Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

These are some big dogs!

Soundness of structure comes from the dogs bone structure which creates your frame.. size in the EM is a product of the breed. This kennel had 2 dogs at the ATL show a few months back, they ran just fine.

As for bone size isn't to be celebrated, not sure why you think that.. note every best in class from the top EMs in the US & imports.. they all have huge bone mass : <-- examples from 2013

In the documentary its stated multiple times that soundness of structure is more important than plain size. A Dog can be big and still be athletic as is the case with some kangals and boz shepherds that can weigh 200 pounds and still chase down a wolf; they can do that because their mass is in proportion to their size. Excessively huge bone isn't something to celebrate either. In the documentary mastiffs are shown displaying their athleticism. The dogs depicted in the OP's post couldn't run even if their lives depended on it.

This video is my point exactly. Crufts is mostly European dogs... Look at those top lines, ughhh I would never breed to a dog with a top line like that, and the rears are seriously lacking proper angulation and overall width between the rear legs. They look very weak in the rear to me.

Also from the standard...

Size, Proposition, Substance
Size--Dogs, minimum, 30 inches at the shoulder. Bitches, minimum, 27½ inches at the shoulder. Fault--Dogs or bitches below the minimum standard. The farther below standard, the greater the fault. Proportion--Rectangular, the length of the dog from forechest to rump is somewhat longer than the height at the withers. The height of the dog should come from depth of body rather than from length of leg. Substance--Massive, heavy boned, with a powerful muscle structure. Great depth and breadth desirable. Fault--Lack of substance or slab sided.

Best in breed -*class*

Wow just watched the whole video, all but two of those dogs had quite poor movement too. That is scary, Crufts is supposed to be like the best in Europe... I guess it was the dog classes, I assume that works like AKC shows and none of those dogs were finished yet.

Just poor handling, they are some of the best.

US judges will confirm the same.

I think that it really is the individual that determines what you take from the breed standard. That is why some people like English Mastiffs that look one way and others like them another way. Some of those dogs seemed off but you are watching a home video, which can show faults that aren't there. You see it across the board with any breed. Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, Labs, English Mastiffs - no one is breeding true to breed standard. The goal is to get there.

For me, this is a male mastiff. This is what I want for my line and he moves just fine:

Albert! That's my dream dog.. tho he's older now.. they just had pups BTW, they sent me pics of them (we just got a girl or I'd have one in a minute).

IMO and several hundred thousand others, he is the "standard" EM. Will he chase down a wolf? Not on his best day.. but I don't think there are many out there that would be able to. However he could bull doze a house, he's a tank.

They have beautiful dogs. I see they have a lot of their dogs from Fireside, who is a breeder that I have been talking to. They have beautiful dogs both breeders do.
I also know the history Annie of Abellio Mastiff's has, which is something that would draw me to her as a breeder. Many years ago she had a CC from a kennel plagued with Epilepsy and a breeder that didn't care. She went through the worst heart break a pet owner can, was vocal about what the breeder has done and through it all maintained her dignity. Having been through the worst, I believe, makes breeders (well any compassionate human) a little more careful in regards to what they produce. And more importantly, IMO, how they deal with it when something bad does happen. Genetics can happen, what makes a breeder great is how they react when it does.

I have a couple Rockport girls, they pull us around and love walks. I have asked many breeders directly about MY girls and have gotten very nice comments. My girls have been health tested, and overall I am very happy
