Phenobarbital is an older anti seizure medication and has a lot of side effects. We don't use that medication anymore on any of our patients however a lot of times when kids have seizures and go to the emergency at the hospital.... Most Doctors there like to start them on this medication. It's like a first line of defence in the old school books and then when we see the patients afterwards we usually take them off this because of the side effects. There are so many medications out there for different seizure types and phenobarbital covers both types
They can most certainly grow out of epilepsy. The main thing is to get their seizures under control and to stay under control for at least 2 years! With people we do an EEG to see any seizure activity as this is the only test that CAN see seizure activity but with a dog I would think you probably can't do this unless you have been trained to read dog brain waves lol. Anyway it's all trial and error with mess and seizures but please don't get discouraged because if she stays seizure free for 2 years and your doctor decides to try to taper her medications (never stop cold turkey and I can't stress this enough ) then you can try to taper her mess and if she goes on to have another seizure she will need to be restarted again.
Another thing about this type of medication is that it can take 7 to 10 days to build up in her system and 36 hours to come out so if you miss doses.... It's going to take a few days to build up again so you run the risk of breakthrough seizures in the meantime so try your best not to miss any doses. Good luck
