  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

My dog just had her first seizure

A life time ago, we had a white Shar-Pei, who had a seizure like thing. She froze up, drooled, spasms in legs (not drastic), head/neck/body stiff, kind of a bounce to head and neck, eyes would follow me, sometimes a small BM. I argued with the vet over seizures. She knew who I was, tried to drag herself to me to hold and talk to her, which is not a seizure action. We realized it was a nerve/disk spasm and when she started I would get a muscle relaxer down her (Flexeril 10mg). Within about 15 minutes it would ease up and she could get up, still stiff, and would walk it off. This started when China was about 2 yrs old. She was 10 when we lost her. Watch all the body and reactions if so you can tell the vet. Hopefully it was a one time thing. I am wondering about a pinched nerve due to surgery since she growled.

Here is a video of a mastiff having a seizure. (it's a hard video to watch). The point of this video was to walk you through on what to do during and after.

Our bulldog/boxer mix would get the head shakes... not really a full-on seizure, but some sort of neurological thing (we adopted him at 1yr old from rescue... I think he got kicked in the head or dropped on it at some point...). He knew where he was, but looked a bit anxious about what was going on. We found that holding a stinky treat in front of his nose re-aligned his brain cells and stopped the shaking.

Hope your fur-baby is all better. That video Hector posted is not pretty...

I took her to the vet today. They said they won't give her meds unless she has clusters in a day or more then one in a month. They did give me something to stick up her bum during and its supposed to help. They did say because of her age and never having one before they are concerned about a brain tumor. I'm going to stay positive that it was a fluke and I will never see it again. Also hoping it has something to do with all the meds she was on and the anesthesia.
I want to thank you all, I am so glad that I found this forum. I enjoy reading everything and for all of the responses I am thankful to you all!

I subbed to this person's channel on youtube because I liked her videos. I was browsing through her channel one day and saw this. When you mentioned about seizures, her video came to mind.

Sorry, I have no experience with these, but remember to breath. You're starting to collect information you need to get her the care she needs.

We're sending you prayers and positive thoughts.

I agree, breathe. The vet said she had to have a cluster of them before he would prescribe meds.

Do you know the signs of when she's going to have a seizure? Do your best to put her in a safe place.

Did the vet describe cluster? 2-3? 3-4?

Remember, breathe and try to remain calm. Your girl needs you right now.

We're here for ya. Keep us posted.

She said cluster or more then one a month. I will call them when they open and see what they want to do. I'm much more calm then yesterday. Feel better that I timed it too, more info for the vet. Thank you!

So sorry, I was hoping that it was a fluke. I'm glad you went a head and made a trip to the vet. I will say that the dogs that I have had that have seizures would have a couple and then go a month or more without having any. I think the seizures effected me more than the dog.

I sure hope the vet can figure this out for you. I can't imagine how scared you are (just thinking about it makes my heart skip a beat)! Take care of yourself as well! I am sending you positive thoughts and prayers!!!!

Did they happen to check her blood sugar? I ask because my first fila had a seizure one morning , we woke up and i let her outside, and went to the washroom my self, all of a sudden i hear this thumping sound so i go and open the door and she was laying there having a seizure. That was at about 6 am vet didnt open until 8 and she had a few more before i could get her there. He checked her sugar and it was through the roof, gave her some insulin and told me she would need a shot twice a day for the rest of her life. She never had another seizure, i had to check her blood, pin prick in the lip, everyday just like a human and had to watch her diet like a hawk.

Because she had blood done a month ago before surgerybthe vet didn't think it was necessary again. I'm on my way to go get meds for her now. They said it could help right away, but could take up to 3 weeks to work. They will test her blood in a month to make sure the levels are right. I am hoping this fixes it!

I am so sorry to hear this. Hang in there they may have to adjust the meds to get it right. Sending hugs and good thoughts your way
