Eye Surgery Today...Gulp.

Well, Baci goes in for her eye surgery today. They're doing both eyes and to be perfectly honest, I'm terrified. Hubby is taking her (it's close to his office), but I have to work all day and I know I'm going to be a nervous wreck! I've taken tomorrow off to be home with her so I can play nursemaid and baby her. I know she'll be happier after it's over, it's the whole thought of her going under anesthesia that worries me. Fingers crossed!

Thank you! I know I'm being paranoid, but she's my baby and I'm a worrier. lol The surgery will be about 2 hours +, and it's not till this afternoon. Being a surgical vet tech, I'm well too aware about what can go wrong during surgery. Ack! Trying to send good vibes with her, listening to her snore like a train right now. I'll post tonight after I get news on how it went. Thanks again for the good thoughts. :)

Good luck with the surgery, try to keep busy it will help with the worrying.

I am a mean mommy, I helped on all three surgeries with my rotties, and the boys still loved me afterwards ;)

The Dr. said it went well, but you couldn't tell by looking at her. It looks horrible...She's in so much pain right now it's breaking my heart. I'm loading her up on pain meds about every 6 hours. And, the cone of shame isn't making matters any better. She did manage to eat her 1/2 ration this morning and drink some water. Hearing her groan is killing me. The doc said it could be 6-8 weeks before the swelling goes away. Awesome. Will try to post some pics in a while. Thanks for all the good wishes, in the long run she will be better off. It's just a tough row to hoe right now.

Well, it's turning out to be more difficult than I thought. Had to start all the drops and ointments this morning....she's never had a problem other than being wiggly, but this am is Cujo. Growling, seriously trying to bite. I had to pin her so my husband could put the first round in. How in God's name am I going to be able to med her by myself????? I know she's hurting, it was just shocking to hear her growl and try to bite me. It was definitely a first....Any suggestions on how to make this easier for her would be greatly appreciated. She is following me around, won't lay down and sleep. The back of my legs I'm sure are already blue because of the collar. :(

Oh dear poor Baci!! The only thing I can suggest is that one of you gets a great big piece of chicken or beef or something really, super, outrageously yummy, hold it in your fist and let her nibble it while she is being treated by your husband or visa versa. The very second the treatment is over and if she has been a good Baci then let her have the whole piece as her big reward. Obviously to make this easier you will have to take off the cone of shame, which I am assuming you are doing before treating her anyway? If you are treating her with the cone on, don't, take it off her first, it wont be quite so scary that way. And as hard as it is, try to be firm with her at the time. I know its hard, and heart breaking, but she cant be allowed to think that she can growl and nip and then get her own way. Its not nice for her to have to go through this, but she does have to go through it and she needs to learn to accept her humans having to administer treatment to her. Just a touch of tough love, as hard as it is.

We are having to administer the eye meds with the cone on. Dr. said for NO reason is it to come off for at least 2 weeks. I'm hoping that as the pain gets better, the fighting will be less. We've been putting drops/ointment in her eyes for 2 months now, I think that because it's so painful is the reason for the aggression. I do treat her after, so I'm hoping I'll be able to do it at lunch, if not, I'll have to have one of the girls from the clinic run over to help. She's just too big for me to lift alone into the truck. I'm hoping she'll forgive me, I'm trying to comfort her all I can, lots of loving and soft words.

Yea, pups will do pretty strange things out of the ordinary when they are in pain. It's really not her fault.

I would recommend having someone help you, like you said. It will be easier on you. Baci will fight it but she needs the meds.

Hang in there...

I would have a word with your vet and tell him/her what you are going through and ask them about taking the cone off just for the administering of meds and then the cone goes straight back on. It will be off for what all of 2 minutes? It cant be easy for you to get your hands in there with the cone on and even more of a struggle which I should think is helping to make the whole process even worse for you and Baci! Imagine if you were back and you had a cone around your head and then you had a pair of hands coming in to that small space, that you already hate, to have someone put stuff in your eyes? Wouldn't you feel much more comfortable if it was being done without the cone around you? This is just my opinion but I cant help but think life would be easier, just for those few minutes, without the cone.

Good luck worst part is the cone just saw this cone.
