I thought it would be good to do a recall list of all the foods in one thread so that anyone looking won't miss anything. Rascal's breeder sent me a list of food that has been recalled, as well as the letter that was sent out by Diamond. She is one their mailing list. Thought I would post it here as well as the list of foods that have been recalled.

Diamond Pet Foods Expands Voluntary Recall of Dry Pet Food Due to Potential Salmonella Contamination

Batches of the brands manufactured between
December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 are affected

Consumer Contact: 866-918-8756
Media Contact: 816-255-1974

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – May 4, 2012

Diamond Pet Foods today announced that it is expanding a voluntary recall to include batches of nine brands of dry pet food formulas manufactured between December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 due to potential Salmonella contamination.

In April 2012, Diamond Pet Foods initiated three voluntary recalls of Diamond manufactured dry dog food. Although none of the additional products being recalled have tested positive for Salmonella, the company is pulling them from store shelves as a precaution. Diamond Pet Foods is coordinating efforts with federal and state health and regulatory agencies and decided to independently expand the recall to ensure the safety and well-being of customers and their pets.

The company stated: “We have taken corrective actions at our Gaston, S.C., facility and voluntarily expanded the recall out of concern for our customers and their pets.â€

Brands included in the recall include:

  • Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul
  • Country Value
  • Diamond
  • Diamond Naturals
  • Premium Edge
  • Professional
  • 4Health
  • Taste of the Wild

To determine if their pet food is recalled, consumers should check the production codes on the back of bags that have a number “2†or a “3†in the 9[SUP]th[/SUP] digit and an “X†in the 10[SUP]th[/SUP] or 11[SUP]th[/SUP] digit. The best-before dates for the recalled brands listed above are December 9, 2012 through April 7, 2013.

The recall affects only products distributed in the following U.S. states and Canada. Further distribution through other pet food channels may have occurred.

  • Alabama
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Maryland
  • Michigan
  • Mississippi
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia
  • Canada

Diamond Pet Foods apologizes for any issues this may cause consumers and their pets. Pet owners who are unsure if the product they purchased is included in the recall, or who would like replacement product or a refund, may contact Diamond Pet Foods via a toll free call at 1-866-918-8756, Monday through Sunday, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. EST. Consumers may also go to a special website, www.diamondpetrecall.com, for more information. The company is working with distributors and retailers to ensure all affecte product is removed from shelves.

Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Individuals handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. People who believe they may have been exposed to Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. According to the Centers for Disease Control, people who are more likely to be affected by Salmonella include infants, children younger than 5 years old, organ transplant patients, people with HIV/AIDS and people receiving treatment for cancer. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have received a limited number of reports of salmonellosis, the illness caused by Salmonella. We are working with the CDC, but due to patient confidentiality, we cannot comment further.

SO! FRUSTRATING! I get that you can't be squeaky-clean all the time, but why does it have to be my food and all my viable alternatives? Thinking of going back to Nutro ... or are they on another list? Haven't seen them yet ...

Not part of this one, yet. But they're owned by Mars and they had recalls in 2008 and 2010.
Yea many companies have had recalls but if Nutro is a food her dog does well on and there is not currently a recall, nor has there been one for two years, then she should use it if that's what her dog does well on.

Thats a gamble I wouldn't personally take, a recall every 2 years is ridiculous and I would have absolutely no confidence in the company if I was currently feeding my dogs their products.

Smart_Family

Dog Food Guru
Unfortunately, going with a company that has never had a recall isn't a possibility for a lot of people. Certain foods are hard to find in different regions, and the price varies by region as well. Sometimes you have to go with the lesser evil and with some dogs who have a really hard time finding a food that works for them, you need to feed them what they can tolerate. That might not be a reality for you but it is for many, many people.

---------- Post added at 12:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:14 PM ----------

And I'm seeing recalls for Mars itself in those years but not for Nutro. The only Nutro recall I see so far is 2009 for cat food that had incorrect mineral levels in it, which I don't believe caused any illness.

Me personally, I don't have much trust (if any at all) in giant corporations and Mars owns nutro among others and they aren't known for their quality ingredients, just like nestle and proctor and gamble. Corporations have one goal in mind and thats the end profit, not quality. I don't care if people change their mind but they need to be aware of where their food comes from and who owns it. I used to feed my Pit Bulls Innova but changed it immediately once proctor and gamble bought them out. P&G was known for using crap for ingredients and there's no way I was going to believe that they would keep their meat sources the same, and look what happened, they didn't.

Smart_Family

And that's fine, because as you said that's your personal opinion. I agree to an extent and usually don't recommend foods that come from the mentioned companies but if someone is telling me that they have a choice between Innova and Pedigree I'm going to tell them to go with Innova. All anyone can do is the best they can with what they have.

You're right. The good thing is nowadays there are online resources that can deliver the food to your door, I've used petflow.com in the past and they are reasonable with their prices.

And again ordering from online isn't a reality for everyone. Prices online are usually towards the higher end of retail costs then with the added shipping, not everyone can afford that. Some people also may not have a debit or credit card (seems weird for the year 2012) but it's true so they can't order online and then there are the people who feed numerous dogs and are buying dog food once a week if not more. They may not be able to afford the time and money that buying once a week plus shipping would take and they also may not be able to afford buying a month's worth of food at once either. There are scenarios and situations that would never cross your mind or mine, but that are situations people deal with every day. I never, ever judge someone on the food they are feeding their dog because I know that times are tough and that they are doing the best they can in most cases. If someone asks me for help or suggestions, sure I'll help them but before that unless it's a danger to a dog, like a food with insane calcium levels then I keep my mouth shut.

mastiffmedic

I guess I'm the say way, only its directed towards people buying 1 ton bags of purina or ol roy..etc. Many people are duped by marketing ploys that they have no idea what they're feeding. And yes times are tough these days but thats when people need to stop and think for a second what they're getting themselves into. This is a mastiff forum and mastiffs aren't cheap. Maybe I just don't understand why someone will spend $1500 on a dog and feed it garbage. If someone has a normal rescue/pound or even puppy mill dog and they can't afford high end food, i understand and won't ever judge them, but if someone is truly broke and struggling and they are buying show dogs/akc/ukc registered expensive animals, then thats a different story.

Smart_Family

Dog Food Guru
I agree that many people don't realize how expensive mastiffs can be and if they spend that much on a dog they should feed it a quality food. Most people who come in here feeding Purina or Ol' Roy just don't know any better and once they read the various threads on the forum they make the change.

What's everyone's opinion about Merrick dog foods? Compared to Natural Balance which currently is in the voluntary recall mode.
