I just brought a bag of Earthborn Holistics, I actually liked the Orijen ingredients but the EH seemed to have more perks.

What's everyone's opinion about Merrick dog foods? Compared to Natural Balance which currently is in the voluntary recall mode.

I'm no food specialist, only an advocate for quality foods to dogs. Merrick had a few recalls over the past few years for possible salmonella in their treats and certain dry kibbles. From what I've read they sound ok but in my opinion they're the usual big corporation so I wouldn't personally feed it to my dogs. On the other hand many people like it and feed it. I'm curious what others opinions are. Here's a couple links I found interesting.

A couple merrick formulas have calcium thats too high : Cowboy Cookout, Puppy Plate, Wilderness Blend, all the Before Grain Formulas and the Whole Earth Farms. Of the rest of them Grammy's Pot Pie, and Turducken have an okay calcium to phosphorus ratio although they are on the higher end of what's acceptable (almost 1.4:1). They both do have chicken and grains if you're trying to avoid that though. If you can tell me what's near you for buying pet food or your zip Jeri, I can make some suggestions.

Zip is 33064. I'm about to pull my hair out over all the dog food recalls! Just when I think we're good,,my brand is on the list! I'm thinking of trying Fromm's. At least it's a small family owned company.

Well you know I'm partial to Earthborn (Coastal Catch, Great Plains Feast and Meadow Feast have appropriate levels for mastiff pups) and you do have several retailers near you :http://www.earthbornholisticpetfood.com/us/where_to_buy/retail_stores.php
Fromm is good but it can be too rich for many dogs. If you want to do Fromm you're going to want to do the Fromm Adult Gold (http://frommfamily.com/retailers/usa?loc=33064&rad=25)
Of course there's Acana Pacifica or Acana Wild Prairie (http://www.championpetfoods.com/acana/locator/locator.php?locate-within=US-florida#POMPANO BEACH) or Orijen Adult or Orijen 6 Fish (http://orijen.ca/orijen/storeLocator/FloridaStoreListing.aspx)
If you need more suggestions than this let me know! I hope this helps some!

I know NorthernMastiff's list included them, but in case anyone else missed it: unless otherwise specified many of these recalls INCLUDE the cat kibbles from the same companies!!

Pet food recall update: Let’s make that 14 brands, as Solid Gold announces recall

Solid Gold Dry Food Recall

Date: May 8, 2012
Below is the official Solid Gold dry food recall effective today. This affects a single batch of WolfCub puppy and a single batch of WolfKing adult.

Solid Gold Health Products for Pets, Inc. Recalls Dog Food Because
of Possible Salmonella Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - May 8, 2012 - Solid Gold Health Products for Pets, Inc., El Cajon, California, announced a voluntary recall of one batch of WolfCub Large Breed Puppy Food and one batch of Solid Gold WolfKing Large Breed Adult Dog Food after being notified by Diamond Pet Foods regarding the presence of Salmonella in Diamond's Gaston, South Carolina facility.

Solid Gold is voluntarily recalling the products below, distributed in the United States and Canada from between January and May 2012. This voluntary recall is being done out of an abundance of caution as these products were produced at the facility that has been linked to recent recalls of Diamond brand pet foods due to potential Salmonella contamination.

Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Individuals handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. People who believe they may have been exposed to Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. According to the Centers for Disease Control, people who are more likely to be affected by Salmonella include infants, children younger than 5 years old, organ transplant patients, people with HIV/AIDS and people receiving treatment for cancer.

The products involved in this voluntary recall are:

Solid Gold WolfCub Large Breed Puppy Food, 4 lb, 15 lb, and 33 lb, with a best before date of December 30, 2012 and batch code starting with SGB1201
4 lb identifying UPC 093766750005
15 lb identifying UPC 093766750012
33 lb identifying UPC 093766750029

4 lb identifying UPC 093766750050
15 lb identifying UPC 093766750067
28.5 lb identifying UPC 093766750081

Best by dates (lot codes) can be found on the back of the bag in the bottom right-hand corner of 33 lb, 28.5 lb and 15 lb bags and the bottom of the 4 lb bags.

Other Solid Gold recipes, sizes or brands of food are not impacted by this voluntary recall.

Pet owners who are unsure if the product they purchased is included in the recall, would like replacement product or have additional questions, may call us at (800) 364-4863 (Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM through 5:00 PM Pacific time).
Two batches of Solid Gold Dog Food Recalled

Date: May 7, 2012
May 7, 2012

Just a few hours ago, Solid Gold received information that two batches of our foods were made at the Diamond Gaston plant around the same time period as some of the previously recalled foods of other brands. Though we have had zero complaints about these particular batches, we have decided to recall them as a precautionary measure. Due to the time difference between us and the appropriate FDA office, there was not enough time in the day to further discuss this voluntary recall with the FDA. We are announcing this now because we know our customers are concerned and didn't want an entire night to go by without this information being available to the public. Tomorrow morning (May 8th), after speaking with the FDA, Solid Gold will officially institute a voluntary recall of two batches of food made at the Diamond Gaston facility.

The following products will be part of this voluntary precautionary recall. Only the two foods with this particular best before date and batch code will be part of the recall.
Solid Gold WolfKing Large Breed Adult Food:
All sizes
Best before December 30, 2012
Batch code starting with SGL1201

Solid Gold WolfCub Large Breed Puppy Food
All Sizes
Best before December 30, 2012
Batch code starting with SGB1201

No other Solid Gold products are affected.

We greatly apologize for any concern and inconvenience this may cause and greatly thank you for your patience. Further information will be available in the official recall tomorrow morning. As always, please contact us at 800-364-4863 or dane@solidgoldhealth.com with any questions and we will respond as quickly as possible.

For the people looking for new dry food options, smething i found very helpfull www.mrchewy.com they have free next day shipping for orders more that 49$ and they have almost all the grain free good quality brands. And the prices are comparable to the stores if not cheaper from what i compared here in NYC. They dont have Earthborn hollistics, but i asked them and they put it on the wishlist.

yeah im very pleased with the free shipping and the the brands i compared Acana and Orijen were even a few dollars cheaper than the stores here (not much maybe 2-3 $ but whatever) and also u can even make a fixed delivery for example i have every 3 weeks so if i forget they send it anyway and you can skip a delivery any time you want or cancel.

Amazon prime is such a dangerous thing for me! It's so easy to justify random purchases when there's free two day shipping involved!

I have to say I love Acana, our dogs have done awesome on it! Including my Boxer who has stupid allergies :) both theGrassland as well as the Ranchlands. So far it has been the best option for us, since we can't feed Aurora raw anymore :(

That somehow doesn't surprise me either. I'm still trying to find something else my cats will eat, they were getting TOTW, and yes, it was a recalled bag, and they didn't have any NON-recalled bags at the store (the shelves were empty). Bought Earthborn, but 3 days later they've barely touched it. Off to find something else.
