Trainer wants to use remote collar on puppy??

sjdavenport did you ever try the trainer with the e-collar?

I've been struggling with any off leash training when there are distractions. Specifically other dogs/animals. They have a mind of their own and I can't really do anything if I'm not connected by the leash to get their attention once lost. Recall is very good during distractions but it's not always consistent.

Yikes, I had forgetten about this thread! Nope, we never did try an e collar. Although I know that the intent was never to use it as a correction, I just wasn't really that comfortable giving it a try. Looking back, I think that was a good decision. Rhaegar is still a soft, sensitive guy, and I'm concerned that it might have done more harm than good. I'm sure there is a right and effective way to use one though. I've pretty much stuck with positive reinforcement whenever possible for training, and it's gone well for us. We have off leash walks all the time, and his recall is great, but I will say that it is NEVER with other unfamiliar dogs off leash around. I just think that would be taking an unneccessary risk, too many things could go badly.

I have random tidbits of my attempts to train Rhaegar sprinkled throughout several threads. Videoing myself makes it easy to see all the things I do wrong, lol. Warning, SO many long, boring videos!!
