Funny thing, you go into Lowes or Home Depot and they have a whole section of books dedicated to breeding chickens, the chicken culture etc. I was raised around chickens and lived overseas where Chicken fighting is still strong(I hate it) and there are TV commercials for high protein "lightening" chicken feed/supplement. Some families in Asia even have fighting roosters on a bamboo perch in the front yard who will attack strangers like a dog, seriously. But I am surprised to see what seems like a resurgence in the US for chicken raising. Which is a good thing.

Yes -backyard chickens are really becoming popular. I am enjoying having chickens way more than I thought I would.
Many years ago my husband had a stray fighting cock they called Roy who lived at their body shop. He was a cranky old bird who would go after you if you provoked him but would just kind of roam about the shop and ignore people most of the time. LOL . He just showed up there one day and all the guys started feeding him so he stayed around. He was not afraid of the shop dogs or our fila who went there every day with my husband.

They just had a huge bust of a cock fighting ring here in Miami - it was a really big bust - not sure how many birds they ended up euthanizing as a result. It was all over the news.

This is a pic of a few days worth of eggs from the girls - I like all the different colors we are getting :)

Nice, yeah having chickens sounds like fun. I have always wanted a few of those silkie chickens, they look so regal :)

The silkies are super cute - everyone who has them seem to really love them - but since I have limited room I wanted breeds who layed decent sized eggs frequently - I like the easter eggers since all the girls look different and the colored eggs are fun ! The little bantam hen I have was a stray I adopted - she lays small eggs but they taste good :)
Silkies do make good broody hens to hatch fertile eggs for people.

That's what I figured they are cute but not hearty layers. Yes I've saw the easter eggers so neat. Homegrown eggs are always better too bad I'm allergic to eggs lol

Im allergic to a lot. Raw honey, gluten, dairy, and eggs. It seems every year something new comes up. I wasn't born with these allergies. I can eat them but I feel like crap afterwards, sluggish and sour stomach.

Chickens are awesome, right now mine are laying like crazy. I started off with 15 four of which were silkies two blacks two whites.. I have three now.. I feed my dogs raw, they seem to think chickens are on the menu if they aren't fed at the designated feeding times.

They dug under the kennels once to eat some, the other times my malinoi climbed up my akc 8ft high kennel for a snack.. Ehh so annoying they only eat my favorite chickens all the silkies, jersey giants, Sussex, and my favorite of all my sultan.

I'm now raising three new baby silkies, and three araucans
