Raw feeders give your voice

When was the last time a tainted raw canine or feline food caused a multi-state recall that resulted in large numbers of sick people as well as pets?

When was the last time a tainted kibble/processed canine or feline food caused a multi-state recall that resulted in large numbers of sick people as well as pets?

I know the answer to the 2nd (can infact think of multiple examples), can't think of a single instance of the first.....Sure, the AVMA's vote isn't going to create a law, but if THEY create an official policy against raw diets a LOT of other folks are going to follow suit.....

People suck. I thought it was bad that certain therapy dog organizations won't let you join if your dog eats raw but this takes the cake.

Exactly, we have many sheep in our society that follow suit, right or wrong. I just think it's sad that they take a stance on anything like that.

While I don't wish to come across as a conspiracy theorist (I'm really not), vets are paid by big name dog food companies. It's why they promote the crap (science diet) that they do. It's not a far stretch to think kibble companies won't pay out bucks to push agendas. Money talks everywhere.

And while agree there is no law yet, never say never. I would not have believed there would be laws preventing me from how many and what types of dogs I own; Or how/when I vaccinate my dogs, or telling me I can't dock/crop.

Basically without a voice overzealous fanaticals can get a law for anything. Our voice needs to be louder.

I agree Ang! Some very good points! It seems that it doesn't take much to get a law pushed through but the peopel affect are never give a voice or an opinion in the matter.

While I don't wish to come across as a conspiracy theorist (I'm really not). Not at all OHF, money is power. Over 20 years ago I worked at a vet clinic with what I thought was one of the best vets in Houston. What made her the most money? Her knowledge, her reputation? NO! It was prescription diet food and boarding. Oh by the way, you had to have every shot under the sun to board. Of course you could bring your dog in for boarding and if you didn't have shots, Dr. Marxen would be glad to give them. We would just take your dog back to the kennel and the shots would be given at some point. Maybe that day, couple of days later or even the day you were to pick up your dog. Now don't you think if the vet truly believed that those shots were necessary those dogs would not have been allowed into the kennel without first having them.

Please, Please ask me what she fed at her kennel. Okay, I'll tell you. Purina! Come on, ask me another question. What was that? Why did we stay open two hours after her last appointment. That's right to sell all that SD. Everybody rushing there after work. Getting frantic phone calls, I'm stuck in traffic, please don't close. Fido will die if he doesn't get his krapple.

Corporate America is winning again. People bitch about socialism well I'm tired of collaborative communism, the 1% ruling the 99%. "Let them eat cake"

:rant2::rant2::rant2:Okay, I'll jump off now!

Thank you for the insight into a vet's office. I use a vet who is a good ole country vet. He treats horses, cows, dogs, cats, etc.

He doesn't rip you off and he will be honest with you about medications. He doesn't push food, shots, or unnecessary procedures on you.

He was vet to my last 3 dogs and now he's Titan's vet. I moved further away from him (30 miles one way) but he's well worth the drive. He doesn't make appointments, it's first come/first serve. We went there yesterday and waited 3 1/2 hours. His office is always packed!

Like with any profession, there are those who do it for the cash and others who do it because it is truly their passion and the cash is a bonus.

Great post Oak Hill

AngelBears, you took the words right out of my mouth. Part of the reason why I have such animosity towards vets ( not saying all of them are bad) but I experienced the same when I worked at a vet/kennel. No one really "cared" for the animals it was all about their word and what they pushed. Corporate America indeed......

The only reason they want to push this is because their food sales are going down.

Edit Musicdeb I agree with the last statement, that's IMO how it should be.

I'm seeing some confusion on this in a few places, heres the actual text of the policy: http://atwork.avma.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Resolution_5_raw-food.pdf no where does it specify 'prepackaged raw ' only, it specifies ANY raw or unpasturized diet. And how's this for paranoid: that becomes official policy and how long before some idiot decides that feeding raw in a home with a child is 'abuse due to excessive potential exposure to pathogens'......

All I know that since I started feeding Titan raw, his skin has dramatically improved. I believe we still live in a semi-free world. Screw them!
