Question about breeding

Is it considered a no no to breed a dog that has no papers? What if they're health tested and a good example of the breed?

I say no, without papers you have no way to know what the dogs lineage is like. What if grandparents and parents are train wrecks and all the stars aligned for this one specific dog just by luck. You need to consider not just phenotype, but also genotype. The dog is not just passing on in his genes what you see in that dog. There is so much more too it than that. He is passing on alot of stuff that isn't physically expressed in his physical appearence. Also I would never breed to a dog without several generations of health testing behind it. So many things like hips, elbows, knees, etc are polygenic genes. There is no way to rule them out with a DNA test like PRA or CMR. He might have good hips, but his mother, her mother, and 1/2 her siblings have dysplasia, your litter from this stud is more than likely going to possess some of the genes for dysplastic hips.

There are just too many ifs. Plus no dog ever produced by the dog could be registered. There are many quality studs out there that are registered, have generations of health testing as well as being conformationally pleasing. IMO there is no reason to breed an unregistered dog.

I think the sole exception I'd make:

IF the dog passed every health test thrown at it, and IF the dog was of stable temperent:

would be ONLY the dog was an exceedingly steller working dog of some kind. Then I'd be willing to accept a breeding (but only to a bitch who's background was known, who also passed every health test given.....)

Similar question. Is it possible to register an unregistered dog with or without registered parents?

No it is not. My sister tried with her Shih Tzu and AKC will not recognize it without papers from the breeder. She can register him in local Shih Tzu circles, but that's about it.

It depends on what you are wanting the papers for. If you are wanting papers (from AKC) for breeding, then no. But, if you are wanting an AKC registration number so that you can do obedience, agility, or some other dog sport with your dog, then you can get what is called an ILP number. Your dog must be fixed in order to get this number. You can also get a similar number with the UKC for competitive events

Depends on the breed, and how you define "unregistered".

Assuming you mean the AKC, newer breeds have "programs" to accept new blood to the studbook, but generally there's requirements about paperwork for the parents and the like (even if that paperwork didn't come from the AKC). And I believe that the AKC will accept registrations from select international registries.

UKC will accept new registrations from dogs registered with a select group of other registries.

If you mean a dog from a well established breed, where you know the pedigree but there's no paperwork, then no, other than the ILP which has limitations.

If you just didn't do the AKC paperwork when you got hte pup then there's probly a way to get that set up.

I forgot about that part. My sister wanted it for breeding purposes(I have yet to break through to her). I do remember reading briefly about ILPs. You can visit the AKC website for more info on this.

You can register pretty much any dog with the CKC (Continental Kennel Club, not Canadian). All you do is send in pics of the dog and I think it's parents. I could get a mix from the shelter and if it looks like a mastiff I can register it as one. That's why people selling CKC registered puppies are not considered reputable breeders
