Any opinions on if these are pimples? 16 month male (unaltered) CC. They don't seem to bother him, but occasionally bleed :-(

Yes, they look like pimples...a pretty bad case of them. My girl wasn't bothered by them when she had them, but I felt bad and they aren't pretty to look at. Most likely it's hormonal and he will outgrow them. Have you tried the suggestions in this thread?

@cblond1121, that is a real bad case of the pimples. Give the suggestions a try and hopefully they will work. Keep us posted.

I went online to buy the Mal-a-Ket and instead went with Chlorhexidine 3% pads because they said they were specifically for dog acne. He hates them!

In addition to the pads, if you want to use those, I would make sure every dish (including water) he uses is scrubbed clean, not just rinsed or wiped, and that you dry his face every time he get it wet. Kryten hates it when I bring out the ACV but a quick wipe and dry does help clear up the problem fairly quickly.

I agree with Smokeycat, ACV does a great job. I use it to clean Titan's face and he runs too when he sees the ACV come out.

Crickett didn't like the Mal-A-Ket wipes either....she smelled them a mile away. I think if you use those, or some ACV and keep the area dry it should start to clear up.

Went to the vet on Monday - she agreed that it appeared to be a pretty bad case of acne. Cheeno has been on antibiotics since Monday and it looks a bit better. uploadfromtaptalk1392950795262.jpg

I've been looking at the info here about acne. Max's chin is a mess again and unless really infected, I'm not doing the steroids and antibiotics again. That was awful. I have seen the apple cider vinegar and witch hazel suggestions here.
Has anyone tried using clearsil type ointment after the cleansing?
I use my drooly rags. SS bowls washed frequently, but will wash every feeding moving forward.
Max has several of his rash spots in pits and groin that have turned dark (almost dirty looking) and a few are red but not infected. I plan a bath here tonight for him and then use witch hazel to clean.
Chlorhexadine is another option and I could use that for his shampoo.

Sounds like yeast infection (the black areas). The yeast infections thrive on sugar and carbs. Does the black look like black guck? Can you scrape it with your fingernail?

What type of food do you feed Max?

I've tried the ACV but not the witch hazel because IMO, witch hazel is too strong to use on their skin.

Do you use SS bowls for drinking, as well?

Continue to wipe his mouth with ACV, I soaked a wash cloth with ACV and a little water to wipe down Titan's mouth in the past.

How often do you bath him?

I feed a sweetpotato and white fish by diamond. I assumed allergies based on this persisitent rash that we have treated with steroids and antibiotics. It's been six weeks and his skin is not cleared. The black spots are dry and sort of flakey. I kind of thought it was scarring from his rash at first but it isn't. Vet was not concerned and did not verbalize concern with yeast. She thought environmental allergy. She did not think it was food, but when he gets a mouthful of the other dog's food, he seems to be worse for a few days. I feed separately now.

Max uses stainless bowls which I wash daily, but he still eats 3xday. will wash every meal. we do use ss bowl for water, which I wash constanty because the other dog will not drink after Max! too much slime.

Raw feeding is out of the question! Vet suggested doing a full elimination diet and I am considering, but the food is about 10$ a pound and they must do it for 8-16 weeks then add other things once clear.

I give apples and bananas every day. I will eliminate them due to the high sugar/yeast thrive and see if that helps. I will also continue to research other food without sweet potato....but if they can't have grain or potato, and raw is out, what the hell do they eat? He is a flipping horse! he's just 8 months old and at last weigh in he was over 130 pounds. The last trip to clip nails proved unsuccessful getting him on the scale, even though two cute little girls tried to help me convince him he would not die if he stood there.

Witch hazel v vinegar... I'm a mommy for sure and I applied the witch hazel to a nasty burn on my arm from the oven. I had it covered for 3 days but the blister came off and it was pretty raw and tender. It did not hurt and in fact it feels and looks better. I then applied to him. He just laid there.

I'll do the acv today. Thanks!

I went the antibiotics and steroids with Titan when I first got him. It would clear up and then flare up again after antibiotics and steroids ended within a week. :(

I'm not sure a full elimination diet would do anything for him because it's not eliminating the allergen. It's like with humans, have to start with elimination of one item for a couple of weeks to determine if that is the allergen.

I would start with food, which most of the time is the allergen. I see that you are feeding grain and chicken free but it may be something in the food causing the allergen.

You can reset his system by feeding him boiled white rice (1 cup)+1 cup of boiled meat+1 tablespoon of pumpkin for 4-5 days. Start back with the food, no other treats or food at this time. Watch his body for 2 weeks, if it gets worse, it's the food. If it doesn't, then add back in his fruit and watch his body. If the fruit brings on the symptoms, it's the sugar in the fruit.

Make sense?

Norman breaks out like that from food allergies, grains, chicken, lamb, eggs and whey.Nu Stock cleared up the infection under his arms and his face! Along with a diet change that is poultry ,grain, egg and dairy free

It's definitely food allergy. We battle with this issue with our female cc. We changed many brands of food but nothing changed. We went for cooked natural food, the pimples as you called it here just disappeared up to this day. Our conclusion is that our dog is allergic to one product common to all these brand. But we could not identify that particular component....so we continue feeding her natural food.

White rice and chicken...both suspected allergy....but what I have read here is that even if potential allergen, when in whole/unprocessed form, it's ok. Regular grocery store white rice and fresh chicken cooked with additional pumpkin *he loves!
cup for cup equivalent for volume? I give him nearly 3 cups in am and pm and at least a cup at lunchtime or he really protests and starts looking for eats (like his crate matress!). Chicken is cheap here and can get it by the case from poultry plant on occassion for about 1$ per pound. Remove skin, correct? The dog is not itching/scratching. seems comfortable other than if I grab his muzzle to release a forbidden whatever in his mouth.
I have also read about natural feeding including a slurry of vegetables and adding cottage cheese or yogurt. Obviously, that would need to be added in one at a time to see if any reaction, starting after he is clear.

I did this crap with my son for years!! Finally he outgrew it. He lives on milk and oreo cookies and McDonalds now.
Thanks all. Round 2 of clearing the boy up starts now...antibiotic and steroid free.

Yes Max's mom..I also love forums where we learn much. BTW We also give chicken, white rice and carrot. Just talked to my wife who said that she tried beef liver with same stuff, allergy reappeared. So we now know one element to avoid............

It is true, although allergic to chicken and grains in dog food, not always allergic to white rice and chicken that you boil. However, some pups can be allergic to both in the natural (or so called natural) form vs in the dog food.

You can keep the skin on or off, I take the skin off for Titan or buy the skinless chicken.

Hope you're able to find the allergen and it's the dog food. :)
