People sensitive to graphic details, is it me?

It depends on the person. The media just outrages me as a rule, regardless because they seem to have a way of making the victim into a wrongdoer and the wrongdoer into a victim. That is neither here nor there. The real issue is that so many people live in a fantasy world. The majority of us on here are seasoned (To some extent) dog owners and some are even more so it is natural that we "get it" and don't turn into screaming lunatics that make things worse but the people in this video seem to be quite the opposite. They DO see their dog as a domesticate pet that would "never do anything like that" so when the moment comes they are actually truly in shock (Ignorance is bliss) and they fall apart. I am not much of a panic kinda person, myself. I am a realist so I look at things differently and after working in law enforcement and the prison system for many years not much holds any real shock value for me. Also, some people are more "emotional" than others and I am lacking there, as well. LOL I hate it for the sea lion but they was I see it, shit happens. Doesn't sound like it was anyone's fault that it happened but it is awful that it took so long to resolve. Of course, I don't think that anyone should own an animal that they are aren't capable of controlling and in the event of something gone wrong, they have to have the mind that will allow them to do what needs to be done. That is actually one of my biggest pet peeves, seeing people with dogs that they can't control and have underestimated but it is a common daily occurrence. Well, I guess I ranted a little bit. For the record, graphic details don't bother me.

Was a very good rant :thumbsup:

People are funny to me, in life death happens especially with animals and it is perfectly normal. I rather doubt wild animals in Africa, Australia or other countries check for cameras before snagging dinner. I am ok with watching an animal do what is instinctive, I am not ok watching stupid people belittle or demoralize each other- that I see too often.

My SIL didn't talk to my brother for a few days after she said, "But I thought cats had 9 lives?" My brother said, "They do...One (snapped his teeth together and shook his head side to side)...Two (head shake)...Three..." He did feel bad about the cat and got the dog off of it immediately but the neck had been broken.

ok, now I'm laughing......

But exactly. If one of the dogs actually caught and killed Evil Kitty I'd be upset (cause its a cat, and I love cats), and grossed out cause of the blood, but its what dogs DO, and its the owners fault for allowing the cat to run free, and its the cats fault for not staying clear of my dogs (cause the damn thing definetly does understand that the dogs want to kill him), its not my dogs fault for doing what they were bred for.

Heck, Arty's a highly prey driven dog. He understands that Trouble is MY cat, and if he touches MY cat he's not going to like the end result. But that doesn't stop the instincts from taking over when she RUNS under his nose, and that doesn't stop him from trying to chase any OTHER cat he sees. Its his nature.

I didn't watch the video so I can comment on specifics but one thing I have noticed from individuals that were born/raised in the western world is a generalized feeling that since we are 'civilized' everything around us is as well.

I didn't see anything 'over the line' graphic in the video... it was just some silly girls in panic-mode screaming at a dog being a dog.
The only thing that made it "news" worthy was the connection to Mark Kelly and Gabby Giffords... otherwise, it would probably get a few hits on youtube and be done.

One morning here at our place, the blue jays (stellar jays) were making a LOT of noise out back (they are nasty noisy when they want to be). I went out to see what was going on, and our DaneX had something blue in his mouth and was very, very proud of it. :) The jays were yelling at him from overhead in a tree. I ran out to him, and told him to DROP IT... and he actually did! I grabbed him and dragged him into the house. It took a few minutes - maybe half an hour - but the baby jay was able to hop up into a bush and get high enough to get home some how. The next day the jay parents were pushing him to fly over our yard, AGAIN... I guess it's sink or swim in the jay family. LOL. I was very glad our puppy had such a soft mouth. He was probably 4 or 5 years old at the time.

I can understand that some people are not as dog savy as us, but even so, I wish they would CALM DOWN and THINK. #1 Rule in anything.

....but the stubborn, irreducible fact remains that Sea Lions are a protected species. Some ignorant, dog-unsavvy people take that seriously

* Sigh.....
1. I think that many 'ordinary' people's sensitivities were affronted, and panicked. As I tried to say before, a lot of people would find the dog killing the Sea Lion Pup an horrific act.
2. since Sea Lions are still a protected species, I should think people would use better judgement about letting their dog off the leash in an area where there are Sea Lions.I do think the Kelly's were fortunate not to have a major fine imposed. AND this is bad PR for bull dogs.
3. I think it is a big mistake, PR-wise, to dismiss and rationalise this kind of incident. If I use another example of Fox-hunting in England, I at one point went out with a hunt. The major inducements were the traditions of the hunt cup and breakfast, the social aspects, and a rollicking good ride over open open land. I still belong to the Countryside Alliance. It was actually unusual for the hunt to catch a fox -- usually a fox that could not outwit fox hounds was old or ill. When I consulted with them, I suggested they emphasise this, as the majority of public opinion leaned toward 'this is a disgusting and cruel blood sport. However, the CA chose to claim and emphasise that Fox were vermin, Fox Hounds were doing what was natural in terms of predator/prey, etc, etc. You know how this ended, thus far. I am simply urging caution, and awareness of how 'the public' may interpret this incident, regardless of what we think
