One lifted leg, an out of control Great Dane and a moron store clerk...for starters.

Ugh!! A truly interesting trip to Petsmart. It was the reminder I needed that I really enjoy being a hermit and that although I love dogs...I HATE PEOPLE! Let me explain:

Ruger and I loaded up for our weekly trip to Petsmart. We both always really enjoy these trips. We had a very nice (and uneventful) ride across town. As we entered Petsmart there was a display of halloween costumes for little dogs that caught Rugers attention...No problem, right? Wrong. Ruger lifted his leg and peed on a little devil costume!! Let me just put things into perspective. Ruger has never had an accident in the house or inside ANYWHERE prior to this but the real kicker is that he is 7 months old and he has NEVER lifted his leg to pee before today. A milestone that I was having some difficulty celebrating considering. LOL So, I find a clerk (I have the little devil costume in my hand) and explain what happened and tell her I will pay for it but I wanted to lay it up front rather than cruise around the store with it, ya know? She was awesome and insisted that I not pay for the costume and took it from me which I was very appreciative of. So, Crisi averted, yes? NO! I took Ruger back and weighed him and then we went and grabbed his dog food and threw it in the buggy and suddenly a very out of control Great Dane comesbarreling around the corner (I am almost certain that he just wanted to play) but he scared the daylights out of me so as I said "Oh shit!" Ruger lunged at him. I believe his was responding to my sudden nerves. Anyway, I pull Ruger back and as I do I tell him to "leave it" and he is listening except the GD keeps coming and eventually I see a man on the end of the leash being pulled behind. So, of course Ruger decides to Lunge again because the dog is still coming. I shared a few choice words (They would probably get me kicked out of the forum if I typed them) with the idiot that had no control over his dog as he straddled the dog, lean his weight down on him and grabbed his collar with both hands to manage to keep him still. Anyway, Rugers nerves are up and I am irritated so we run over grab some pig ears and get into line so we can checkout and put this experience behind us. For those of you that read my other posts, you know that Ruger is going through a fear stage ....Well, I am waiting in line and an employee comes in from the parking lot with one of those big cart on wheels things for carrying like tons of dog food for stocking. Ruger turns scaredy dog and starts pulling backwards to get away. I start to firmly get him to calm down and reach for the treats in my purse to use this as a training experience and hopefully a step towards the end of this fear stage when the dippy store clerk running the register next to us says (in a very excitable voice) "You need to let him back out of there and walk him around the other way because your dog is seriouslt traumatized!!". My patience were gone so I offeredher some very hateful sarcasm as well as some even choicer words (No, I am not proud) and I paid for our stuff and got the hell out there. What a trip!! I apologize for such a long post but I needed a good vent!!

BTW, Ruger turned 7 months old on the 18th and he weighed in at 125.4 pounds. I cannot figure out how to measure him for the life of me so I can't tell you how tall he is. I am adding a few new photos:

Holy crap. You guys had a very interesting visit? While I like taking Duchess to petsmart I tend to avoid it now. Every time I've taken her the trainer guy follows me around the entire store asking questions about when I plan on signing her up for training. I guess he recognizes us as there may not be very many EMs that come in the store. I don't know but I find him SUPER annoying!!! I can barely ask friendly looking people to approach Duchess just for a pet without him breathing down my neck. And heaven forbid the food sharks aren't there. The bil jac lady is the worst!

I'm almost glad Duchess is sick. I doubt I'll be taking her back to petsmart anytime soon. Or maybe I'll try petco once she's not contagious anymore. They always seem less busy!

I completely forgot....please smack me. I love looking at Ruger's pics. He's so handsome. An 125 lbs?!? I can't even imagine. At that rate he could break a record! Lol

That must have been very nerve racking for you! I would have probally had a bottle of wine after that! People have no idea how to handle their dogs and then we has responsible handlers have to pay for it! Look on the bright side no one or dog was hurt physically but I dont think Ruger will want to go back any time soon!!!!

So sorry for your horrible experience at Petsmart. I do not take Titan to Petsmart a lot. On a happy note, Ruger is very handsome and very big! Love the last pic!

Okay, so I have to admit to laughing a little while reading through this. :p I can relate, living in a big city and having to maneuver my dogue through some crowded situations sometimes...and just about everything that CAN go wrong, does...

Too bad you were not able to properly celebrate his very first leg-lifting; I remember texting a friend when Mateo first lifted his leg. I also may have clapped, (a little...).

There is a Petland across the street from where I live. My main problem with them is that the manager there is constantly fawning and spoiling Mateo: giving him tons of treats, as well as letting him have (for FREE) 2 different stuffed toys, as well as a large braided bully stick; each time it's something different. Just because "...it's Mateo and we love him!" ( ***I wish I had enough charisma to just walk in somewhere and get free things...)
So now, my dogue thinks that every time he goes in there he can just take whatever he wants. Ugh.

Sorry for the rambling- I hope you have your feet up and a nice cool drink in hand...you'll laugh about this soon enough!

Yes, it was interesting to say the least. Sounds like the trainer needs some choice words, too. LOL I haven't ever had a bad experience at Petsmart before now. It sucks that you have people ruining what could be such a good socialization opportunity for Duchess. Thanks for the compliment. He sure is growing and he does seem to be bigger than everyone (EM's) his age but as you can see in his photo's he is still pretty trim......You may be right, he may be an overacheiver. :) I hope Duchess gets to feeling better very soon.

Oh,it was and I was never happier to get home. I am heading out for drinks with friends in a bit....LOL. That is my biggest fear, that he will now not like going. He gets so excited to go and I hate for him to see it as a negative. :-(

I am afraid I may not be able to take Ruger much anymore either and that stinks but what can ya do, right? Thanks! He is getting so big and he has such an awesome personality, too. That picture cracks me up...He thinks he is a person. LMAO

I did thinkfor just aminute "Good Boy" as it was pretty exciting but the reality that he was doing it inside Petsmart on little dog costumes, cut it short. LMAO Soundslike petland is a very positive experience for your baby which is great. Ruger is spoiled, too, so he thinks he can have anything, anytime, anywhere....But he does mind his manners. :) I will be watching the sun set in a couple hours off of a deck with a nice strong drink in my hand. Truth is, not long after it happened I was laughing (At least about the urination). Thanks for the compliment. His paws are so big and everyone always mentions them.

Great pictures!
Sorry PetSmart was ugly that day. It's a good opportunity for working on reactivity??
Maybe the store trainer should have been there to intervene and help the owner of the GD calm things down!

For measuring.... I tried numerous times to get Denna to stand still for a measurement, but finally gave up. I can get her to stand next to a wall for a little while - and I mark where her shoulders are on the wall, then measure when she's moved away... I get a measurement +/- 0.5 inches, which is better than nothing. LOL!

And 125lbs at 7 months. WOW.
Denna is just a week shy of 7 months, and weighed in at 73lbs yesterday. Maybe she's right... and we're not feeding her nearly enough. LOL!

That sucks, I've yet to take shadow to a petsmart or petco he doesn't do to well in busy places. Luckily there is a small shop that sells his food I can take him to where he isn't overwhelmed.

What's funny is when Duchess sees the tape measurer, she comes & stands perfectly still right in front of me allowing me to measure her height. When she hears the tape snap back into the holder she knows she's done & gets a cookie. ;)

Aksel was born in a state of fear. Anything out of his territory is terrifying. The store, the vet, heck walking to the corner of the block seemed insurmountable for a long time, we finally, at six months, managed a full walk around the neighborhood without having to have my husband drive out and pick him up. Trying to convince people at the store not to lunge for his face to pet him is a constant battle, he pees himself and then will growl. But to stop taking him, to stop taking him anywhere, would only worsen his issues. So we go, and I act as bouncer, and we try our best to ignore the stupid people, the out of control pets, the wanna be dog whisperers. Bleh, I guess I just mean I feel your pain!

He is certainly a beautiful boy.
I take my dogs weekly to Petsmart, as well as various other locations.
If they react to something like a cart I then get a cart and make them walk beside it until they are calm. It is overwhelming but that is what I want. Same with busy streets, pathways, parking lots... It is a good place to help them get over those stages and learn to trust me. I also take them In every now and then to have their nails done. Yes I do them at home and am a dog groomer but it is good to get them used to others handling their feet.
If the trainer is bugging you I would tell them point blank that you are not interested in taking a class with them, you have another trainer you are working with. If it persists then talk to the store manager and tell them that it is making you uncomfortable, and it will stop. As for the food reps, just say you feed Acana and are happy, thank you and goodbye. Lol, I only say Acana cause I know PS doesn't carry it :p

Sorry Petsmart wasn't that great of an experience. I had to laugh about the lifting of the leg though. I think it is funny that he picked the little devil costume. You think he was trying to tell you something...that maybe he is a little devil. LOL. Great pictures and I can't believe how big he is getting.

Oh gosh! One of my worst fears is when owners can't control their dogs, I'm afraid one will try to get Bruno and my toddler will be too close for comfort. He is so handsome.. and big!!

Cody, you present a very good point!! I was damn near considering going to a different PS as I think the trainer guy I'm referring to is ALWAYS there on the weekends. Maybe I'll go during the week. I'm gonna have to do something bc Duchess is getting too heavy for me to weigh at home. It's like trying to hold 10 sacks of wiggling potatoes. Lol
