HI I am new to this site, I have a 11 week old bull Mastiff named Mac. He is darl Brindle and getting very big, very fast. My husband and I and our 12 year old daughter live in the house. I knew the breeders of our puppy and have met the pups parents several times. The parents are very docile and large !! Mac is crate training and is pretty much house trained, if he makes an accident in the house then it would have to be our fault as he goes to the door on a regular basis. To date he has not had any accident in his crate and sleeps all night long. He is our baby and we love him so much. We have been trying to leash train him by taking him for short walks every day. He is never toed as we have a fenced in yard and except for when we are out or in bed for the night the crate door is open. Our problem we are having with him right now is his mouthing/biting us. He will go into attack mode about twice a day where he bits at our hands/clothes anything he can get his teeth on. It REALLY hurts and it scares my daughter becuase she knows how much it hurts. Mac knows the sit command and the stay but when in this mode he doesn't listen. I have tried the ouch, leaving the room ( with him holding onto my pant leg the entire way out lol), the ignoring, " no bite" and gave him an approriate chew toy, putting him out of the room, holding him down in submissive pose, cuffing his snout - EVERYTHING!! I am scared he will be aggressive, already some of my daughter's friends are scared of him. How long does this last????? Is there any suggestions? I understand it is a puppy thing it is just that he is getting so big it really really hurts and my hands and arms look like I was in the ring with a tiger lol. Any replys would be appreciated.

Jiggers was really bad for biting as a puppy. One thing I noticed was that the times when it was the worst he tended to be tired. Once I realized that I was able to use his crate as a training tool instead of as punishment. I would crate him as soon as he refused to listen and he would be asleep almost immediately, very much like a toddler who needs a nap.

Redirection is key. When he bites, give a big "OW" and walk away while giving him a redirection object. Good redirection objects are ropes, kongs with treats inside, frozen wash cloth/hand towel, ice cubes with treats frozen in the middle, nylabones, deer antlers.

Do not allow the child on the floor with the puppy because he will think she is a play mate like his siblings.

Keep him on leash while in the house so you can have better control when he starts a biting episode.

Consistency is key and LOTS of patience. I would not hold him down or hitting him as these actions can lead to fear aggression which you do not want to deal with that behavior. Hitting a mastiff on the snout can cause injury due to their short muzzle.

He's 11 weeks old, it's going to take a bit to get him to stop the biting because that's how he played with his siblings.

Consistency and patience!

I agree with Musicdeb. We had the same issue with our Major. We didn't think he would ever stop the nibbling. Once he sunk one of his baby teeth in my finger and damn did that hurt in addition to it bleeding. Giving him plenty of toys to bite on, ropes, etc.. will help alleviate that. Make sure you always have something handy. One day we woke up and he didn't nibble anymore. He stopped chewing on the floor, the couch, my hand, LOL. Occassionaly he does lick his crate when he is annoyed that the crate door is shut. He is such a social dog, if he isn't allowed to socialize with new people, he gets whiny and sometimes nibbles in a playful manner. This is few and far between, but its so amazing to realize certain behaviors happen at particular times. This makes it very easy to rectify the situation.
