my scared baby

Hello all. I have a Cane Corso Mastiff that is my baby. He is a great dog who is really afraid of people. His previous owner did not socialize him. He is pretty skinny and am wondering if this is normal. He does not have worms and is healthy. I was just wondering if this was a slimmer breed. He has paperwork going back to great- great- grandparents.

I would put up a photo because people's opinions of skinny vary significantly. And welcome!

Please do post some photos of your baby :) We'll do whatever we can to help.

It sounds like one thing your baby really needs is confidence. You can do a lot to help him build that through simple training. Start out doing things he already knows, praise and treat lavishly, then add more behaviors, exercises, tricks, etc., to the sessions -- slowly -- set him up to succeed and absolutely reward him, especially with praise.

Now that you've got him used to being praised and liking it a lot, use that reinforcement when he's out with you. When he sees a person (start with at distance) and doesn't react fearfully, reinforce that with the reward.

You get the picture :) Confidence is the best way to help make your mastiff safe.

If he needs to add some weight, Satin Balls are great. There are several recipes on the web.

I was just wondering if this was a slimmer breed. He has paperwork going back to great- great- grandparents.

Some lines are thinner, taller
some are thicker.
It can also depend on the age, they do go through a stagy period, and take a long time to fill out, up to 3 years.
Our Dolce was a skinny, lanky girl. Her bone was pretty light. When she was PTS she weighed around 74 lbs (had lost weight, was about 84 prior) and was 25.5 inches at 12 months.
Our new girl, who comes from lines with huge bone mass, is 9 months, 23.5 inches and roughly 90lbs.
It just depends. As long as he is healthy and happy I wouldn't worry.
Some lines just take longer to fill out.

Welcome. My corso, Boo is more on the slim side. His weight is 115lbs. My neighbor has a male corso that's quite stocky and weighs 140lbs.

Welcome from another newbie!

my breeder told me before i got my baby that CC's are naturally cautious breed. Rocco would jump at the sight of his own shadow in the beginning. i was told to get them used to loud noises early by banging pots and then praising/comforting them for not cowering. This will insure that they are comfortable with noise and are not scared if an intruder comes in your house
