AB-I hope that I am not offending you in any way, but, to all of you out there, She is a Texan and will give you the truth, like it or not. I grew up in Sweden, moved to Chicago in 1995 and moved to Dallas in 2002. I would not have it any other way. Dallas is different then Houston, but Texas as a whole is awesome, and I will not move anywhere else.

Well if you look at the facts Texas is number one in population growth and business growth and is considered one of the best states for respecting personal liberties. Illinois is number one in population loss(different than population decline) is number one in small and corporate business loss, and is pretty much a corrupt police state who could give a damn less about your liberties or right to protect yourself and your family. 4 of the last 7 Illinois governors went to prison.

And Shitcago, what a cesspool, its a great example of everything thats wrong with this country. There is a movement in Illinois to secede from Cook county and the northern part of the state.

I don't live in Houston, and never would, but the surrounding areas are really nice and I wouldn't live anywhere else. Houston is a typical big city, too many taxes, crappy schools, and terrible traffic. It sounds like you'd be looking to live north of the city so you won't have to worry about all that. We live north/north east of the city and absolutely love it. It does get hot in the summer but like the rest of the first world, we have a/c. The winters are mild, especially compared to Chicago, but you can actually go out and do things year round.

I've lived in several states and they all had some nice things, but I'll never live anywhere but Texas until the day I die. FWIW, in all my travels, I've never seen any other state where people have bumper stickers that say "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could". ;)

Politics aside Chicago is a wonderful city! It has different cultural pockets where you would swear you are in Italy, Poland, Germany etc. Lots of cultural events down town, the Field Museum, Art Institute, Shedd Aquarium, Rush Street is great night life if you want the club scene outside of the small ethnic neighborhood bars. I loved Chicago. I only left because I enlisted in the military and when I got out I had to go somewhere I had family.

To the OP, is the only reason you are moving to be near family? I would take a good hard look at your job and everything else you have going for you in Chicago. Texas is a GREAT place and I've moved a bunch in my life so I would never discourage anyone from moving but you don't mention anything about YOUR life, goals, wants and needs, just that your dad is leaving. I know when my folks lived in Hong Kong I still called my dad when I needed advice, and I was in my early 30's at the tiem. <G> I get wanting to be near your family but there are other considerations. Another thought is if you want to be close but don't need to live down the street you could look at Dallas or any number of other places that are an easy drive for a long weekend visit with family.

Good luck with your decision, keep us posted.

Actually the rest of the world doesn't have AC, that is why when they get the high temps (90's being high LOL) peeps start dying and it makes the news. My first apartment in Chicago was in the mid 80's and it did not have AC. I agree though, when you get out of the city there are some nice areas down there. My brother lived in the Woodlands and as a kid I lived in Spring. Both nice areas that get you out of the city and traffic.

This thread made my day. Now I am hankering to leave Crook County, Il and head to Corsicana and shoot a few hogs.

"And Chicago, what a city, its a great example of everything thats great in this country."

On Saturday the president and vice president of the Chicago teachers union attended the Midwest Marxist conference and then on Veterans day they held a teachers protest march to disrupt the Veterans parade. What a city.

If I cared about politicians and unions I'd be miserable every day. I don't give two s**** about them, so I can actually enjoy beautiful cities like Chicago that offer so much. I also can enjoy beautiful countrysides, mountains, etc. As long as I'm not sweating my n*** off and being eaten by bugs, I'm generally happy.

LIAR!!! What humidity? Lol. As soon as we get anything resembling a northern wind here, my skin turns into a solid surface that cracks and bleeds like a dry dessert floor.

This thread is great! Lol!

Yes, my main reason for moving would be to stay close to my family. And give myself the opportunity to explore a better option in my career field.

If you've given the career side consideration as well and it isn't just a knee jerk reaction then by all means, come on down. I'm not certain about Houston but I know when my beloveds work collueges from NY look at the Dallas/Ft. Worth economy they say if you only looked at our economy you wouldn't know there was a recession. This was back when it was at its worst. Not sure if Houston is the same but while we did have our issues we were no where near as bad off as the rest of the country. Come check it out and see what you think. I did and have no regrets. :)
