I need help (information on importing)

I'm in love with english mastiffs but there isn't a single kennel in my country. Not even a registered club or anything. The only way I can get a dog like that is importing it from somewhere else. I want to make this breed more popular and I want to have a healthy dog. This is not a rush decision, I've been researching this breed for some months now and I already feel like I know everything about them. And I haven't even seen one in real life. It's not going to be my first dog either, so I'm not a novice. And after months of just googling around I finally decided to make an appearance and ask for some info. Now, I'm not rich and I realize that this is going to hit my budget pretty hard. But if I'm going to do it, I'll do it the right way. I'm willing to travel to see the parents of the dog, pick it up myself and wadawada. The thing I don't know is, how hard is it to import a dog to another country? Does it cost anything or just a little bit of paper work? And do you think that all of this will be worth it overall? Is it pointless to import 1 dog only? Does this mean it should be neutered?

I'm from the Balkans in case you're wondering.

You will need to check with your department of agriculture or whatever the equivalent is. Some places have quarantine requirements that you will need to be aware of. If the quarantine period is lengthy I personally wouldn't do it. For some places proof of rabies is all that will be required depending on the age of the dog.

^^^ agreed. I believe that area often has a 20-30 day quarantine and/or the import has to come from a rabies free area. Again not sure, something you would need to check on with your local government.

My grandmother used to travel with her dogs from Mexico to the USA and back 2-3 times a year. She carried the dog booklet -the one the vet provides with the dog medical / shot history- a recent rabies shot and a letter from a vet, no idea what the letter said, but you could prolly check with a local vet.

About 2 yeas ago a texas rancher told me that was very important to check that the dog didn't had thicks, recent cuts or thorns, so he usually bath the dogs before crossing the border.

It could be completely different requirements for your country, you should check with a vet or an import / export agencies before even contacting your agricultural and animal departments, bet they know more creative ways to import.

I imported a dog from Poland and didn't have any issues....but I live in the US. She had to clear through customs and that was about it. I drove to Chicago to pick her up, and drove back home.

Good luck in getting your new dog.
