Hi! New here. CC registration question

We were not primarily interested in the dogs pedigree, but rather most importantly in the dogs ability. We had been to a number of breeders and it was one problem after another and just too complicated to get a straight answer or to get the breeder(s) to actually demonstrate their dogs ability's - other than standing as if being judged. One breeder laughed at us when we told him what we were wanting a Cane Corso for, another said she would consider extending us 'the privilege' of accepting our application, another was hooked on the pedigrees being the only thing that mattered, another wanted us to sign a no breeding contract in exchange for the pedigree/registration, two flat out rejected our application, etc. Honestly, no offense to the breeders here, but it was ridiculous. We wanted a Cane Corso to do the job it had been doing in Italy when we first were introduced to the breed before it was even AKC accepted. One breeder told us that if we wanted a dog for live stock to get a herding dog. He was by far the most offensive breeder, and really out of touch to what the Cane's ability's include. I am sure there are some great breeders out there, but it seemed that unless we could afford to import from Italy - which we couldn't- all the breeder attitudes toward the breeding and sale of the pups was geared toward the association of desire with affordability, rather than between compatibility and need, and simply (over)priced their stock accordingly.

Anyway, we found someone who was able to demonstrate and actually have his dogs work the yard and his fence line for us and we were able to interact with the dogs and watched the dogs interact with their kids and even with another set of potential buyers too. We visited several times and we have no ill feelings toward these people at all. We have had our dog checked for health issues and all has checked out ok. Sure, they did not have papers, and maybe that is the meaning of back yard breeders, but maybe it was tough for them too to obtain a pure breed dog to work their yard without suffering any grief and simply choose not to obtain registration by not neutering or spaying, etc. We were interested in a dog that was both true to its heritage and ability's and one that met the book standard. If there were no papers, well, papers don't demonstrate ability either. None of the breeders were willing to sell us a dog for what we could afford, nor could any of the breeders demonstrate that their breeding dogs were able to do anything close to what the Cane Corso's job has historically been, if some even allowed us to interact without constant commands on their dogs at all.

We are more than happy with our Cane Corso. He is exceptional, majestic, solid, smart, thinks on his feet, playful, attentive, a great babysitter, and seems to have his own high set of standards for doing his job. We would like to try and obtain papers by way of merit thru proving the dogs ability's and by proving his genetic lineage/soundness, in addition to the sound health of the dog. We are looking at other genetic heritage markers to show no recessive genes etc, but even within pedigreed dogs there are bad recessive genes that can render an animal non breedable, etc. Just looking into all that part now.

So, that is why we did not go with a more 'reputable' breeder.
I think I love you. Can I see a pic of your dog,and get some infos about him?If you know blood lines of parents,if breeder told ylu anything abou them..
And by the way.. Going to sgows and winning a coloured ribbon doesn't make you a breeder, not an expert of the breed.Who breeds dogs with underbite simply breeds mixes,Cane Corso never had that kind of bite but scissor one.He never had such a short muzzle or coat, and he NEVER came with that lucid-black labrador colour..Cane corso was used as guard to the sheeps, cows and any live stock,he had to be an IRON dog,not a fancy dog with sheep temperament. He did big hunt, guard, was used by the "briganti's as war dog,and last but not least he did dig fights..
Don't judge people for their choise and don't trust too much about pedigree's,i can say you the name of at least 3-4 kennels that make false one using boxers in thevold times, and now mastino napoletano..And present you 5 dogs of the same "breeder" and from the same litter that live 50 km distant and have 2 years of difference..First Understand the breed, his history and everything that was behind the recovery of it,and only than youbcan ask talking with people about it.
Just my 2 cents.
For the original poster.there should be a long iter in italy to get the ped,it was easier few years ago but now the society..strange,people started searching the truth about the race, and they close the book of bloodlines :D (i don't know how to say it in english,it's the loi or lir in italian..)
Last thing. The so beloved society of race failed 5 times in 20 years of life and the standard has been changed 3 times,a wrong standard based ob a dog that had reverse scissor, not under bite..Another strange thing don't you think?Think about my words people :)
cheers

I believe he's just saying that papers and titles mean nothing as far as the ability cause we have moved towards aesthetics solely for breed standards.
I agree with him on that!

x2 ^^^ And that is why you should enjoy your CC, after all he sounds like he is everything you wanted for him to be, registered or not. Who cares?! No you. And not me. Plus, I had a feeling E1kpo would "love you", based solely on something I once read, and this recent post. And I also agreed with it. Cheers! ;)

Ahahahahahah I love everyone who thinks that ribbons titles and (fake) papers don't make the dog,in every race..But when comes the CC...well there is just too much disinfo around this breed..That the situation becomes ridiculous. In canada I know a man, that has some of the purest c.c. bloodlines out there..But well nvm :p

I don't think ribbons make the dog, I just think its stupid to get upset that you can't register your dog when you went out of your way to find one who wasn't registerable.

And if you ARE wanting a registerable working quality dog then you have to be willing to work within the confines of what those breeders do. Thats just how it works, like it or not.

Well I am in Canada so what man are you talking about? Gerry?
Gerry who? I'm talking about dogs that come from working lines, contado del molise and apulian's one..I just saw that he is actually from Quebec,so probably you won't know him..He is new to c.c. breeding world...

In cane corso it's pretty inexistent a registered quality working dog.My dog isn't registered. I took it for tradition, for what c.c. has always been and I knew what I had to do.The fact that she isn't registered doesn't touch me,because in my opinion i don't see the image of the cane corso in this actual standard,so there is no need to register and conform my little doggie to a ''false'' standard.
Anyway yes,it's pretty useless to cry about the registration of the dog,if you wanted it for work and nothing other well just enjoy your dog.

Nope you are right, have no clue who he is any more than you know who Gerry is but think he would be more than a bit insulted to have someone call his dogs show dogs :) since he brings his in from his families farms in Italy and some of their surrounding friends.

Gerry Iannichinno, La Villa Cane Corso. He has been in the breed, well since he was born but breeding I think for 30-40 years. You won't see many pictures of his dogs and you won't learn much about the lines as he keeps it private, does his thing and doesn't worry about what others are doing.

LOL! There are lots curious about him :) he tends to keep to himself, took me a bit of time to get him talking to me and sharing stuff :) He can be a little too blunt for most people and they don't like that, he doesn't pull punches and he won't sugar coat it which doesn't make him a favorite for a lot of breeders ;)

Just to curb my curosity on the subject, BlackShadow I'm sure you can answer this as well as any other breeder please let me know. If I were to want to start breeding CC (I do not at this point, maybe in the future) how would I still go about buying the correct dogs if most breeders force a non breeding contract, or co-owner rights? If that's too much to answer or you don't feel like it because I don't plan on breeding right now that's okay! I'm just a curious guy! thanks lol

If you want to own the dog outright, and not have to co-own, then build a relationship with the breeder you like the dogs of, go out to shows, even if you don't have anything entered. Study on the boards, understand the standard and show that you can/will be an asset. We aren't a difficult (well most I guess lots are ;) ) group to get to talk to, as we all love talking about the breed but we have a lot of flash in the pan types that are more concerned about $$ and such than anything else and they come and go fast, but there are always more to take their place.

This doesn't mean that you won't end up on a co-own but perhaps it will be one that you get to dictate more of the terms and would be less strict than someone who does not have a relationship with the breeder.
