HELP: Titan lunged today and I almost lost it

This whole conversation got me wondering about it from another angle...if you were the person who was being lunged at - by any dog - is there anything that we, as the humans can do, to communicate to the animal that we are not a threat? ...hopefully helping out the dog, the handler and keeping ourselves safe?

My instinct would be to turn to the side (so I am not facing the dog) and avoid eye contact. Is there a better or different way to handle it? If we are the one holding the leash can we stop people from making the situation worse?

FYI, I've also dealt with my dogs lunging and barking/snarling and it shakes you.

Has anyone heard of an ultrasonic anti pulling trainer for mastiffs? that you hook to the collar and then hook the leash to it and if he pulls it makes noise to him and causes him to stop? Any opinions on them? My dog pulls too and Has pulled me over, my shoulder is still healing from it. I am now a little leary of taking him in public for walks,,,we live on a farm so we dont NEED that for exercise, but I'd like him to be good in public too.

I have heard of them and they do not work or only work for a limited time.
It will not train your dog to stop pulling it will only train to it but dogs figure it out and work thru it.
You are better to train your dog and teach the dog to want to be with you.
Do you have obedience on your dog?
Can the dog do the commands thru distractions and on a one word command OR does the dog pay attention to the world and hear you for commands when he wants too?

Yes, Deb it was a pleasure talking with you and you gave me a lot of great tips/suggestions on training Titan not to lunge.

I agree, CeeCee, the person being lunged at should avoid direct eye contact with the dog. But it's human nature that if you feel threaten that you want to face the attacker.

I believe with the tips and suggestions from Deb as well as others on the post, I can train myself and Titan not to lunge and to tolerate men. We started working on Deb's suggestions last night and Titan was very receptive to the change.

Onward Titan and I go...

Chuck, do not ever change your sense of humor. Makes me laugh and when I need it the most. :)

On not having a good results with stool command.. How long are you waiting before you give up?
Seeing people is fine, if you walk out your apt you have grass, & dirt.. You are a step away from going back inside if something arises you go back inside without having to walk around getting pet back inside.

Taking the dog for an actual walk you are putting the problem out there to happen, owner to bring fear into the situation & dog to react.

I have learned to wait longer, have gotten burned from not waiting, then kicked myself later. Keep in mind I have had my puppy for less than 2 weeks. My dog isnt aggressive towards anything yet, I was more speaking on the dog in question, that he DOES have to go out at some point.

That's great you are getting things in 2 weeks .. Keep up the great work.

I know who you were speaking of. And I was explaining. But Deb & I found it to be easier to talk on phone so she might understand how to do what was not being understood thru text :(

Good luck on your pup :)
