  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

He doesn't have a name yet but I have decided the he is ours......:-)

I would really like to crop them because I like that look better but I will be leaving him natural because thee is no way I will be able to get Ruger to leave his ears alone for 3 months or more unless I am always getting on to him and by the time his ears healed, Ruger would hate him because he was always getting yelled at over him. It sucks because I really want to get his ears crop and think he would look SO good.

Don't blame you Kris, I like the look too but it is a pain.....Dealing with it right now. They both play so rough, argh! Only 5 more months to go.

Does that mean that Mason is the same color as Stone? I would know but I haven't seen a photo......LOL

Yeap. :) Though his color is lighter than Stone.

She's withholding information! Driving me nuts! I'm tired of stalking you DD to see if you've posted pics yet! ;)

Lol, nope nothing yet. Maybe I'll do a video.

Why do you think she's doing it?

I'm a troll.

Thank you. Yes, I think they will be something else when they are full grown. The more I learn about the GD, the more excited I become about this little guy.
Congratulations! I've never had a dane, but lived next door to one for years and he was amazing! At the time, I had a newf/hybrid wolf mix(Cody) and Gabriel was his best friend- he'd come over and they play in the back yard and hang out together. They were so funny together! Gabriel had the best temperment and personality! When yours gets big he and Ruger are going to make quite an impressive pair! Will look forward to all the pics!

So you had Mason's done? I have been contemplating back and forth and I really want to get his ears cropped. I am going to talk to the vet a bit more........It is ok to talk about Mason in my puppy thread..Hhell, you can even post a couple photos of the boy if you like. LOL Yes, I have been mulling a few names over and I can't be sure but unless he opens his eyes and it doesn't fit, His name will be Magnum.

Thanks. I was looking for an EM and eventually I will add another but I stumble upon ths litter of puppies and simply fell in love with him. I have always thought the GD was beautiful and I have never met one I didn't like so....Dane it is! Recently my son got a puppy and he brought him over and Ruger did great with him. Loved him and was very gentle except for accidentally running him over once.

Oh Magnum would be cool, I REALLY like the name. :)

Yes I did....to be honest I'm not sure if I would do it again. The crop looks nice but it can be a lot of work like you mentioned with them playing.........and mines the "shorter" crop.

Its really up to you if you want to get the crop done. But find a vet who specializes in Great Dane crops I drove to another state to have Mason's ears done. I went here Asheville veterinarian, vet in Asheville, NC Dogs, Cats, Animal Doctor, Vaccinations Cropping is an art and it takes a keen eye, only a few skilled know how to do it. If you do decide to get a crop see the pictures first. I'm at work right now but tell me which state you are in and I'll see if a can give you some names of vets who specializes in great danes.

And no Kris this is about your puppy not Mason :)

The upside to getting his done is that the vet that did his daddies as well as about 14 other GD's is here locally. The breeder reccomended him and has 8 dogs that were done by them. I like the crop that his dad has.....and that is what I would like him to have. I think they look so good with the crop. I just know how hard it is going to be with the two of them. Speaking with the vet, he assured me that there is no way in the world that I would have to wrap it for 3 months. He also uses laser instead of the old way. I feel very confident about him but I am not sure that I have that much confidence in myself to keep it right. That is the biggest part of getting the ears to stand right. Thank you for your offer of help. I haven't decided yet but I really really want to get it done. I was tossing around 3 names, actually...Remington, Winchester and Magnum but Magnum seems to fit him better. :)

Thanks, CR!!

On the contrary I say you have quite a bit of confidence! Living with Ruger, taking on a puppy haha! That's great that the breeder has that option for you. The amount of time you spend taping would depend on ear leather not really how the actual procedure is performed. A cropper vet would evaluate the ears first to determine if the dog is suitable for cropping. Don't want to go through all that work for nothing :(

Most American breed danes have decent leather and a better ear set. Mason being a heavier line has a lower ear set and thicker ear leather. So the vet had to do some fancy work with him. Now I just have to hope they stand. Also given the length of Mason's ears it's also a bit "shorter" than a "medium" crop for a dane. It kind of looks like your boy's daddy's ears. I could easily be taping for a year.....but I'm hoping at least until 8 months.

No problem Kris take your time, with the decision be sure your ready to commit 100% Mason if the first dog I've ever cropped. I was nervous as hell LOL, even though this guy had done countless dogs. Although I had an idea what to expect it was a still quite an experience. Its a WIP but I do feel we bond more. :)

PS one vote for Magnum!

Taping for 8 months!! Yikes!! Hopefully it won't take that long. I am going to have a consultation with the vet right after I get him home so he can be evaluated. The vet said that if he can and does do the crop, he will wrap his ears before he comes home and after 10 days I need to bring him back and have the stitches out and he will wrap again for a week. After that he will look at him again and decide if he needs to wrap again. He said some pups only need a few weeks and others may require just a few more. He told me that his nutrition during the 10 days and then the week after his stitches are out are of upmost importance. If I make sure he eats really well and gets what he needs, he will require less time wrapped. I am going to stay open to it for now as I really do love the look and then make the final decision after the eval. I really am dying to see new photos of Mason. Maybe the video you have been hinting about??? It is just mean to withhold photos of a dane puppy while I wait for mine to be old enough. Have some sympathy? LOL

You know, the more I say the name Magnum, the more sure I am that it is the right name. I like the two names together, too Ruger and Magnum. I think this first time Dane experience is going to be something else and I am so excited to introduce him to Ruger and then deal with all of the new puppy, Crazy, giant puppy shenanigans!!!
