  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Guess the breed (or what am I crossed with)

I mainly said some mixture of lab bc I know someone that has a lab that has damn near the same body structure. And when I look at the first pics you posted I see lab in the forehead of that dog too. Just can't remember if it's American labs that have more of the block/square head....northern do you know?

^^^^I think it is the English labs that are the stockier/bulkier build?

I agree with you on the body and forehead

There shouldn't be a difference, it is just something breeders have said to differentiate field and show. English Labs generally have a bulkier build (but they are just fat) Not really shorter and usually, they are slightly taller than a field lab but they have that thick body build to make them look big. A show lab (English Lab) is usually around 105 to 115 - that isn't the breed standard by the way- while the field lab is usually proper weight, 90 pounds give or take depending on the male or female. I see Lab in that dog along with the Olde English Bulldogge and if there is lab, it is definitely the English Lab.

My previous dog was a Black Labrador, English type from show stock. He did have a heavier build, with a larger, blockier head and larger sized paws---great swimmer so the paws were put to good use... :)

Either way, at 84-88 pounds, he was not fat-- but, being a Lab, difficult to keep him from being so....;)

I will try to pull up some pictures of English and field. Trust me there is no real difference. Many breeders will say a pet quality lab is a field lab but it isn't. There is a huge misunderstanding about labs perpetuated by "show" breeders. The head can be just as blocky in a field lab and you can produce both field dogs and show or "English" pups from a English litter. It's like Chinese crested - a fluffy and a hairless can be born in the same litter but I have seen some breeders separate them like they are an individual breed.

Jeez work is interrupting my social media time. English lab is a good call. My Rott/Chows have been mistaken for those many times. I see Neo, EM, BB and maybe DDB in that first dog. Neat dog but not the BB in my eyes. I hope someone pulls the sheet out from under these guys and demands a DNA test. I would love to see them stop producing these fake Boerboels.

Just found them. That dog is actually from the Ysterberg lines, which are a mix of farm dogs. So there is a lot in there. Here is the page explaining them

About Us - YSTERBERG MASTIFF

And what is in them:

Old English Mastiff, Bullmastiff, Old English Bulldog, Bullterrier and even some Tosa

Hey, I got the EM and the Old English Bulldog right. LOL. Do I know my breeds or what? The body, now that I know Bull Terrier, makes sense.

Oh yah, definetly.

I guess he could be calling them BBs cause at one point the Ysterberg dogs were included in the BB classification. But yah. Not a BB, at least not by current standings.

I have no idea why the breeder is saying Boerboel as it clearly states on his page that he is a ysterberg mastiff

Boerboel Australia Inc. - Stud Dogs

OMG Northern you found it! This guy from Atraxia (Craig) is blowing smoke up everyone's backside with this dog. Is everyone else just blind or do they think the Ysterberg Mastiff is still a Boerboel? I'm furious right now! NO damnit they are even calling him a BB on the Ausi page with a 91% score. This is just BS for the breed.

Ysterberg Mastiff.

Quoted from the Ysterberg website.
  1. What is the difference between a Boerboel and an Ysterberg Mastiff?
This is a discussion all on it's own but in short: the Ysterberg Mastiff is bigger and stronger build than the average Boerboel. They are bred to be extremely agile and therefor do not have the short body-builder look. Ysterberg Mastiffs are not appraised to receive a percentage mark but have to complete a Breed Survey, Temperament Test Evaluation and an Agility and Strength Evaluation. Becoming a member and breeder is not open to anyone but by invitation only.

They are so intermingled there is no way to seperate them. I have been trying to get a straight answer on this question for weeks and no one will give it. I think mostly because almost every BB you trace will have YBM in the liniage and no one wants to admit they don't have a pure SAB. I have been seeing some really nice true to form SABs and they look closer related to the Rhodisian Ridgeback and not the YBM dogs. If you can see this photo album on FB you will see what I am talking about.

Well I found out the owner/breeder breeds DDB and Boerboel, and is a huge Ysterberg fan.
