  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

First heat cycle tips.

First off I am waiting to spay my dog tell she is 18 months due to research I have done. So the people that are going to start that whole breeding talk stop now. Just looking for some pointers from people who have experience with their corso's and the heat cycle! We just noticed our 11 month old Nali has started her first heat cycle. Any help is appreciated Thanks!

Make sure you have a very secure area for potty. Never let her outside without you. I have seen them back up to a fence for a male, male climb the fence, etc. You know men, they want what they want. LOL Have something washable for her to lay on. If she gets in the bed or on the couch, a waterproof mattress pad to save the furniture/bed clothes is a good idea. Diapers do not work for us, someone will help Snookums get it off. Old rugs you can throw away might be a good idea too. Females are usually really clean about this but still you are talking about a big dog and there will be some mess. We are going on third heat here. I got sick and don't think we are going to make it to the spay before the heat. It really isn't that bad, just guard her around males. She may be more temperamental around other females/pets, clingie with her humans, or not eat as much. PMS in dog. One week coming in, light to heavy spotting, one week in heavy to light spotting, one week going out light to clear. Breeding usually 12th to 18th day after starting heat. So be really careful then. Hope this is what you wanted to know.

Buy some doggie diapers and I suggest just buying maxi pads as is cheaper then the dog kind :) You may notice her being a little more sucky then usual. There are 3 parts to the heat cycle, each on average last about 7 days, so you have a good 3 weeks to keep her in doors. If you take her out for walks be very careful with where you go and other dogs in the area. Because males can smell it for around a 5 mile radius I believe, I do not leave my girl outdoors unattended. Even in our enclosed back yard with a 6 foot fence. The most dangerous, as far as getting pregnant goes, is usually days 8-15 (just to be safe) and those days I do not walk I only allow in the yard and in the house. If you have a male as well it helps if you make the female pee in a different area so that the male has no access to the urine or it's scent. Good luck and enjoy lol.

Carma is now 8.5 months and I think her first heat is coming. Why you ask....She is being a complete B****. Super territorial. She is barking every time somebody pulls into our culdesac. She is also licking herself a lot and keeping her crate extra tidy. Good tips from you guys. :)

I agree with Cody...buy maxi pads...way cheaper than what is sold in pet stores. My husband thought she was bleeding so much....LOL I laughed and told him this was nothing. My girl had very low energy during this time and she wanted to cuddle....all the time. She cleaned herself all the time too. I did not let her out of my sight if we were outside. Males will do ANYTHING to get to your female....there was a male in our neighborhood that broke his leash to get to Crickett. He charged on our property to get to her, but she wasn't having any of it. (it was late in her cycle)

Personally I disagree with doggy diapers or any sort of diapers unless you are taking her out where there are other dogs or you have light coloured carpet throughout. 1. There really isn't all that much blood in my experience and 2. the dog cant clean her self freely if she is covered up. Also there is no airflow and IMO its less hygienic that wiping up the odd spot of blood.

I think it depends on the bitch. Rawr is very clean, not much blood so we don't put on the diaper until standing occurs. Mainly we use it cause she is a royal biatch in it. She pouts and snarls at BJ if he so much as looks at her, even in standing, so we can have them supervised in the same room lol. But even in standing she is mainly without her diaper, away from our male in another room with the kids or myself, while Bj stays with dad. I am not a fan of leaving it on for extended periods of time either. But I know of females that are very messy and have to have them on or there is blood everywhere.
