Does your dog snort?

When Cane spots something and goes on alert, if it is not moving towards us he stands his ground, makes himself big and snorts. Loud, sounds just like a bull, he will even paw the ground.

We have had Ziva for 1 1/2 years. She was 3 when we rescued her, well into her temp and she snorted for the first time today.

So, anyone else have snorting dogs? I have owned many breeds but I don't recall any that snorted.

Define snort.

Apollo huffs, or chuffs I've heard it called, as a "I think I should be alerting but I'm not 100% sure its worth making noise over" sort of thing? He does paw the ground when excited though.

Lol

To me a snort is an exhale through the nose, where Apollo's huff is almost a soft bark, I can see his lips flapping in the air.

Is it kinda like a bark with their mouth closed where their lips kinda puff in & out? Duchess does that, I'd more so classify it as a huff as well. She does more "snorting" & snoring when she sleeps.

Kryten snorts when sniffing the ground. He sounds more like a pig than a dog then. I don't think I've heard Kryten huff but I know Jiggers does, usually when he looks like he might have heard something but isn't sure.

We are having issues with something that burrows into the ground and leaves little hills of dirt all over, when Cruiser comes across one of its holes, he does that snorting thing and paws at the hole. Sounds kind of excited and snotty at the same time!

If Lincoln is tired and laying on his side and I start to rub his head he'll just lay there and he'll start snorting. I almost think he's kind of purring. If I stop rubbing/petting his head he'll stop, then he'll start snorting again when I start petting him again.

My black lab puppy "Jack" snorts like a bull. I've never seen this behavior in a dog. Unsually occurs when he is disobeying a command. He will snort (nostrils flare open) and take a step backward. It seems intentional but it is not aggressive.

Gunny snorts when he's sniffing too, but he defintiely has a distinct deep huff when he's alerting to something.

Loki snorts a LOT! But he is always smelling around or smelling someone when he does it. If you closed yours eyes you would swear a pig was smelling you. It's pretty fun y to see strangers react to this when they ask to pet him. They almost always make a funny face.

Ruger is the king of snorting...Much like a bull! It is a guardy excitement when he isn't sure of what it is yet but feels the neccessity to "check it out". He also snorts like a hog when he is sniffing.

Hi I am new to this forum. I actually own a chihuahua and came across this thread in a google search. My dog sniffs just like that angel. When he is playing and feisty he will snort just like a bull and lower his head like a bull does before they charge! It is so funny because no one else I have seen has the behavior. It must be the confidence in the dogs. I know my chihuahua is overly confident and I would think a mastiff would have quite a bit of confidence as well!

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!! What a thread!!! Boone doesn't snort as much as grunt, especially when he wants to play. The game of fetch is his poison of choice - but the idiot puts his leg on the other side of the toy (he doesn't like balls) while trying to pick it up with his mouth from the other side. Needless to say, the toy doesn't budge, and his grunting over the effort goes on for a while. Pretty entertaining :lolbangtable:
