Cane Corso/Rottweiler mix

180.jpgHi there! I am new to this forum! I have a (beautiful!) 4 month old, 46lb Cane Corso/Rottweiler mix pup named Bella (her father is full Corso and mother is a mix of the 2). I have had her since she was 8 weeks old and she is very intelligent and sweet. I have been taking her to "puppy parties" (a puppy socialization 'class' at my local vet), as well as doggy daycare once or twice a week to socialize her with other dogs and people. I try to take her as many new places as possible. She has completed Puppy Obedience classes and will be starting the next set when she is 6 months old. She has always been alittle timid of men and that doesn't seem to be fading even with socialization. She is absolutely fine with women and children, but she barks at any men she sees (even when I take her to my parent's house, she will be fine with my father after a few minutes, but if he goes outside and comes back in she will go crazy barking at him again. She has never attempted to bite, and when he (or any other male) comes over to her she usually stops barking and becomes almost submissive and trys to stay as close to me as possible. Also, she plays great with other dogs (was very timid of new dogs at first as well, but has come around ALOT since taking her to puppy parties and doggy daycare and loves to play with them now) however I've noticed (as well as the staff at the daycare) that when I come to pick her up to take her home, when other dogs jump on me she will growl and bark at them. The staff said she doesn't do that at all when I'm not there, and she's fine with them as long as they aren't around me. I have 2 other dogs besides her and she doesn't mind when I give them attention etc. (well..she might try to weasel herself in to get some love too haha) but never shows aggression with them about it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Thank you! She was alittle younger when this was taken, but I love the look on her face in it :)

Very cute puppy. It sounds like she has some fear issues with men that may take some work to desensitize her to them. Sounds like you have done great work socializing her and with getting her into obedience classes.

Welcome aboard~ Titan has been afraid of men since he was abused by his former owner. I've been working on socializing him to accept men but afraid a year, it hasn't worked yet.

I've been told by a couple of trainers, that he may never accept men and to take the necessary precautions.

Your pup is young, so key is to expose him to as many men as you can. Reward him when he does well. Tell the men to not look, not touch or talk to the pup. Let him go to them. Always, always keep him on leash around men until he starts accepting them.

Titan is ok around a man until they look or talk to him, then it's game on.

Thanks everyone! She really is a sweetheart and I will keep working with her with her man issues :) Any advice on how I should react when she growls/barks at other dogs when they come around me? (The dogs were not being threatening, just jumping up excitedly) Also, having a little issue with her play biting. I have tried basically everything to get her to stop (tried 'yelping', ignoring her, distracting with toys, stern 'no', pushing her away, holding her on her side until she is calm etc) and it just seems to get her more excited and biting more. I know she is teething right now and that is making it worse, but it just seems to be when she gets really playful/hyper that she does it. She does break the skin sometimes (sharp little puppy teeth!) I have 2 other dogs and have had dogs all my life, but it's been awhile since I've had a puppy (my other 2 I have now I adopted as adults so they were over this stage lol!) I can't remember if my other puppies in the past were still play biting at this age or not. I'm sure it will pass with time, but any suggestions on how to rush it along would be great lol :)

Ignore Bantu

For bite inhibition:

When she bites either yelp an "ow!" or just say "ow!" loudly in your normal voice, THEN GET UP AND MOVE AWAY. If nessecary leave the room. The last part is key. If you just stay there, or push her, etc, you're playing with her.

ALSO hand feed her some or all of as many meals as you can manage. Starting with adults in the household only: put a couple pieces of kibble in the flat of your hand, if she comes in roughly, especially if she catches your hand/fingers in the process close your hand around the kibble. SHE WILL CHEW ON YOUR HAND. Don't let her have the kibble till she either stops OR licks your hand. Then open your hand and let her eat. Once you feel she has the concept everyone in the household should participate, children obvioulsy with adult help and supervision.

Hello; I have what I believe to be a cane corso/rottie female named Bella too! Mine is about 20 months old and a rescue pup. she is beautiful with a sweet, gentle temperament. she is also stronger than I am, but we are working on that. Your Bella is beautiful too and looks kinda like my Bella. What wonderful dogs these girls are.

I love the big ol' bear paws on her, adorable, my pup is just under 5months and he still goes to play bite sometimes, it's been a pretty easy habit to break him of luckily, he realized that hand in mouth means no belly rubs
