Hi all, im new to this site. Just signed up and posted a new introduction in the new person section. Im glad to have found this site to learn, make friends, and see what others is up too. Ok so I know im new but please help as I would for any other person if I knew the answer to a question they would have. Heres the deal. I have a 8 month old Fawn Female Cane Corso. She is my world. I have had alot of issues. I recieved her from a breeder at the age of 6 months. I have had
1. Mange- treated
2. peeing problems in the house- mostly fixed now
3. sometime soft stools sometimes hard- figured the food issue out
BUT............................................................................................ She keeps geeting bumps all over her body that scab up quickly, she sometimes scratch but not alot. we took her to the vet to clear the mange and than took her to the vet for round 2 for the bumps and dry flaky skin. They said it was a allergy of some sort and have her on meds. It cleared up. Now it came back and her skin under her chin is so cracked it bleeds alot. I cant seem to figure out what the bumps, red and black weird spots on her belly is, cracked skin that bleeds and so on. The vets told me its this and that and diffrent meds shes been on with no fix. I have changed her food 3 times, shes on flea meds and is a indoor dog. My wife and I are very clean people and never does she get people food or into any "dirtyness". We also changed her oatmeal shampoo and still problems. So please if you have had this issue and could help out id appreciate any advise. Also she is still crate training. Im tryining to give as much info as possible.
Thank you again Leo and Honor

I would look into feeding her RAW. I know quite a few ppl who it has worked for with allergies.
Maybe Mary can pipe in, I know her male has serious allergies and a raw diet seems to be working for her.

smart_family, The natures choice is grain free and no chicken in it. Its venicen. Im not sure if its still allregies as we have her on two diffrent meds for it. But im thinking it is some sort. With the symptoms i posted God only knows whatr the issuee is :( Going to a vet for a third time and 3 diffrent oppinions or diagonosis would really start to be costly. Im not exactly a millionaire :) lol

Keeping her on meds probably isn't helping her immune system. What about trying a limited ingredient diet? Are you interested in feeding raw? We have some great raw feeders around here that are super helpful.

The natural choice does have chicken fat in it which can cause a reaction in dogs with severe allergies.

smart_family I am very intrested. Just at the moment im concerned as to what her issues are and if they are a allergy issue. The vet said it come be a number of things and still couldnt pin point it. Im so bummed as I stare at her rite now and she doesnt act misserable but boy I feel bad for her :(

I would feed raw. It sounds like your pup may also be dealing with a yeast imbalance. Does your dog sometimes smells like corn chips?

Boy does this sound like me a couple of years ago :( I wasn't dealing the bumps breaking out but overall terrible coat and skin condition and just not getting what was needed from the food. I tried everything you have 2 different medicated shampoos, 3 different high quality foods, Advantage multi just to kill anything that might be causing an issue all to no avail.

At this point we were at the end of it and thought you know what we have always heard about RAW and how great it does for dogs, we have tried everything else at this point so it can't really hurt to try it. Well after one last medicated bath and within 2 weeks of starting RAW there was a marked difference. After 6 mths on the RAW you wouldn't believe it was the same dog, my vet certainly didn't :) I don't know if it is an option for you but for us it did work. If it isn't then I would trying and find a grain-free single protein food that doesn't have chicken (we suspected this was the allergy for our male) and see if you can get it under control. I also would find a gentle bath that isn't going to strip his skin any more than it is now and I would probably take him off the medication as long as he doesn't have an active infection as they can play havoc on the liver and kidneys and if they aren't helping then there really is no point.

I wish I had taken a before picture that I could show you but you can see after pictures of him now (or as he was in October anyway) in previous posts.

angelbears and blackshadow...thank you for the response as i am hoping many will chime in and help us out. I am gonna try a diffrent food and raw here asap. im just so heartbroken and want the best for her and even vets just say "this is what it is, give her these meds and she will be ok" and with a few visits and money spent nothing has helped :(

Could it be an allergy to the flea meds? Have you tried going off (winter time should be safe to do that) - or use a different brand?

This reply about allergies came through on a yahoo group that I follow. It explains a little about why raw helps.

It is not always a matter of "allergies", or of raw making them stronger - which it does anyway. The junk in the food, mostly the high levels of Omega 6 from grains and from the animals who eat the grains, causes the inflammatory reactions. These make the skin itchy, but, worse, they also inflame joints and tissues all over the body. Were she to switch to raw, the food will contain only good and appropriate ingredients - the natural food for dogs, and the itching and inflammation will go away.

Allergy testing is a huge waste of time and money. Folks who switch to raw find that their dogs are not "allergic" to any of the named triggers when the foods are presented raw. This is because the heat of cooking the kibble or canned denatures the proteins, making them difficult to impossible for the body to properly break down. When this happens, the body reacts to the protein as if it were a foreign substance - which it is, actually - and there is an allergic response as the immune system tries to deal with it. The body is doing exactly what it is supposed to do - there are no "allergies", just a healthy response to an invader.

So, all that has to happen is to provide appropriate food, with good Omega 3:6 balance. We see this over and over again; I hope some will cite their own experience, or that posts can be found in the archives.

This was going to be my question. I had some skin issues with my EM, turned out to be a yeast imbalance. We put him on some homeopathic meds to help him, and he is all better now. We changed his food several times, finally landing on Acana Pacifica. It is poultry/grain free, and with fewer things in it that can feed yeast.

I have read that if you suspect a yeast imbalance, have your vet do a blood test to test his tyroid. Here is a link that helped me. http://www.greatdanelady.com/articles/systemic_yeast_mini_course.htm We did not have a blood test done on our pup, since he was so young when the problem started, it was unlikely to be a thyroid issue.

Keep us updated! Best of luck!!

I dont feed raw but from what I have read it is best to sart only with one meat, chicken for example and feed it for a couple of weeks to eliminate guessing if there is a problem. Hopefully Angelbears or someone with experience will explain better.
