Breeders near Michigan

Well, I'm just starting to look into getting a Cane Corso. Later then sooner, maybe a year from now. I'm in Michigan but would be totally willing to travel.
I have and have had lots of dogs. I was a dog trainer for some time, but got tired of training people. Did a little work in Shutzhund, pretty rusty now. Have done lots of rescue. Now I do dog grooming and own my own shop.

So here I am on this site seeing great looking dogs...sigh...

Is there any good breeders near me at all?

That is going to depend on what exactly you are looking at in the breed. It is kind of all over the place so finding a look that right now is what you prefer or even breeders that interest you and perhaps we can help from there. There are several of us on here that have dogs that are from different breeders. My biggest piece of advise is to RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH!!!!

Well, I'm glad I have some time! I know that research takes time.
I'm not gonna do showing or breeding. Mostly I want a dog to be a family/property guard/alert dog.
I'm planning on buying a boarding kennel and needing a good dog just be be with me and watch stuff.

With research, I'll be starting at the beginning. I don't really "know" the breed, but like the dogs I have seen and like what the breed stands for. I want to go with and support a good breeder.
With most other breeds people say to start going to shows, trials, clubs meetings etc... So I guess I'll start with that. I'll take any input and info people throw my way!
Thanks in advance.

The corsi is becoming the new popular thing so be aware that there are a lot of soft dogs being bred. Know the lines you are interested in, talk to people that own them and get their personal experience. There are some good breeders out there but there are lots of less than stellar ones.

As Mary said temperament is crucial in the breed.
That is just as all over the place as type, and equally debated.
As you yourself said, is best to start with dogs you see that you like and begin to go from there.
There is a bunch of CC enthusiasts On this forum with dogs of varying types willing to help you out find what it is you are looking for. The one common denominators is we all love our dogs, the breed and LOVE talking about both, whether or not we agree with eachother all the time :)
Any questions just ask away.

Great place to be!

What about AKC shows? I myself am not a fan of the AKC and see them as mostly money grubbers. That said AKC shows would be the easiest way for me to view some dogs. I know good breeders of other breeds who are mostly AKC with some UKC tossed in and they have fine dogs, because the breeders themselves are doing the correct thing with health and temperament.

I probably will write up a health "do you test for this?" check off list.

I have a pretty darn old AM Bulldogs who is from the basic "Painter/Scott" line. I know how crazy people get about fighting between Bulldog types. Is it the same with CC's ? My bulldog was a rescue, but I truly like the leaner, athletic, working style over the super large, ponderous, extra bully style's, like the "Johnson's" lines have become.

I have never seen any CC's at any Shutzhund competitions yet, but will now start looking harder.
I don't need a soft dog, I don't need a family ~pet~, I don't have kids. I do have a husband, but he's pretty dog smart :)
I would rather have a smart, stable, intense dog to raise correctly.

Hoo boy! I'm getting excited!!

AKC shows are a great venue to see the breeders you are interested in and also how their dogs tend to be have out of the kennel/home setting. There are usually some at the AKC shows and UKC but just check the judging schedule to make sure there will be some attending. Sometimes contacting the breeders you are interested in and asking they will give you their show schedule so you can catch them out.

Also in April there is going to be a Cane Corso Nationals if you can make it out to PA. That will be the place to see a huge number of corsi all at once usually 60+ in attendance.

As long as you demonstrate that you are willing to put the time/effort in and know the temperament and what your old guy is going to be willing to handle then they will try and work with you to see if they can provide it. Just explain what you are looking for and don't settle make sure they can provide it.

There are a couple that come to mind right off the top of my head that are working at it or have titled in it...

Vulcan owned by Ron Ackerman
Damian owned by Marisha Allabouttown
Safir owned by Alla Zilberg
Nasa owned by Annie Wildmoser
Mufasa owned by Bodyguard Cane Corso

There are some lines that are harder than others so you can ask the people that are working their dogs what they think. Most aren't in your area but they I think are all on Facebook if you look them up they are probably more than willing to talk.

We are also here if you want/need a sounding board or if you just have a few questions. We have a gentleman that was here to visit not long ago that has a senior AM Bulldog that wanted to meet our breed and he is like a kid in a Candy store :)

Thanks for all the info!!
:partyguy:

PA is not too far from me really! I was in Hershey for a groomer Expo just this fall.
I'm starting to set the wheels in motion for attending the CCN in April.
That will be so cool!

There are quite a few CC's in working sports :)
There was a working weekend in Chicago at the beginning of Sept, I know that there were a few CC there, Tai Nero has some dogs from Rivale, Marisha with Damian, Angie Stark with Dozer I believe, and Ester (who recently joined this forum) with her girl Biagia (aka Beetle) from Del'Agreste. all those dogs have titled in the working arena. There are a few CC working/training at the SoCal all breed ringers, some working towards their IPO, FR and MR titles.
They come from varying breeders. I know that some also compete in the AKC show ring, NASA, Gemma (owned/handled by Annie Wildmoser) have their CH as does Beetle :) . I know there are quite a few shows in Ohio, with decent numbers of dogs showing, same with in MI. There are CC working pages on FB you can check out.
Good luck and maybe we will see you in PA :D if all goes as planned.

It is probably the place that is the easiest to catch up to most people involved with the breed. There are some good discussion boards on there that have some real helpful people. Good luck and let us know if we can help out :)

You might get more answers if you start your own thread. Or pick a big city near you and google dog shows in ------ the city of your choice! Good luck!

Did you ever find a breeder?
Does the breeder have to be in Michigan?
If No what is the farthest you will go out?
