I am not sure either one of us are gonna survive this teenage phase.

Mystic has decided that she likes to dig in my garbage can within the last 6 weeks or so. She has gotten so GD brazen that she will do it while I am in the room. WTF!!!!

So basically every morning I am waking up to garbage torn up all over my house. (She has learned how to knock the baby gate over) Well this morning I woke up to garbage in my dining room, kitchen, 4 seasons room. Oh yeah and a brand new pop that she decided to put a million damn holes in and leaked all over my hardwood floors. So I told her to go outside she laid there with her head down tail wagging just looking at me like.........Mom why the hell are you so mad at me? I am cute remember?? I had to walk over to her grab her collar and guide her to the door(GENTLY of course). Meanwhile I clean up her mess at 5 am. Just what I love to do before work.

I open the door to let her in and tell her to go to her cage. Which normally is not an issue she runs into the dining room and lays down. I am BEYOND fuming at this point...........I walk in there grab her collar GENTLY (which she tries to slip out of UGH) I then try baby talking her trying to convince her to get in her cage. she then LIES down!!!!! WTH!!!!!!! Finally after baiting her with treats I get her in the crate.

I know we are in the teenage phase but what is with this constant BS??? She acts like an abused dog if I correct her now. I am now buying stock in Absolut Vodka.

Please tell me this will end soon....even if you have to lie to me. She is almost 14 months now.

When will this stop? I have never had a dog that had as bad as a teenage stage as her.

Im so tired of this phase also, hope someone can give you an answer so I can see an end to this chaos.

Put the trash can on the counter when you go to bed. I have to do this with Junior if there is something in there I know he wouldn't be able to resist.

I am going to buy a can with a lid this weekend. and honestly thinking about getting an aluminum out door garbage can to ensure she can't get the lid off. It has gotten to the point she will even tear up DIAPERS!!!! How DISGUSTING!!!!!!

Get a heavy can with a lid, if there's food in it they will try to get it.. that's to be expected with any dog.

These phases are why it's important never to slack off o.b. with your dog , the stronger the dog has a foundation in it the less issues you face when these phases come. There's no "sometimes" with a dog, if you let her get away with what she's doing now she will continue.

EM's are very strong willed there's no doubt about that, you give a inch and they will take a mile. Time to get to work.

I NEVER EVER let her get away with it. And have stayed with the OB training as I know better then slacking off after owning Rotties and Dobes. :) I have NEVER EVER owned a dog that would continually get into the garbage after being reprimanded a few times.

The problem of course is that getting into the trash is self rewarding. Definetly a trash can with a lid, and definetly put it out of her reach, and seriously consider crating her at night. At least till she's past this.

do you use kongs at all? Or puzzle toys? Could she need more mental stimulation? Especially now that you're working again and not home with her?

This is her getting away with it in your own words dear :p "I walk in there grab her collar GENTLY (which she tries to slip out of UGH) I then try baby talking her trying to convince her to get in her cage."

You can use bait or lure corrections to teach her to think of the trash the same as a hot stove.

I am starting to crate her at night as of today, as this is just out of CONTROL!!!

She does have puzzle toys and a Kong. She is only alone for 15 mins twice a day, Andy and I work opposite shifts. She is only alone when he drops the boys off at school and when I pick them up.

The garbage thing I get. But what is with the acting like an abused dog thing????

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. What do you think I should be doing?

If I've taught a dog a command and I'm certain they know it 100% they've got about 2 1/2 seconds and I will correct them.

It sounds like your pissed when your doing this so she more than likely knows that and is feeding off it or she's testing you (no way to tell without seeing it in person). So if it's she's feeding off your anger you gotta get that in check, she shouldn't be in the trash can but at the same time that's pretty rewarding for her so your at fault.

Like AB did though I really just wanted to post pictures because if you do nothing.. I'm sure we will have some good post to read :razzberry:

We came home to garbage all over the living room a few times with our first dog (yum, used coffee grounds on carpet!) - which he decided was a fun thing to start when he was ~5 years old... strangely enough, he only did it when we went out to dinner BEFORE feeding him his... hmm.... payback?

Anyway - we bought a "Simple Human" can with a foot-operated lid. Very hefty model. It is now on it's 4th dog, and has yet to be gotten into since (knock on wood) - and that's even after Denna watches me put smelly raw food wrappers in it...

This is the one we have: simplehuman | 30L butterfly brushed steel step trash can w/ plastic lid

As for the rest... yep. Take a breath. Ignore her ratty behavior. Don't let her win!! 6am's not too early for shots, is it? I work from home, so no one to smell my breath. HA!

When Denna pulls the "flop on the floor and won't move" trick, I walk away... count to 5... grab the treat jar and make her come find me. By then she's forgotten why she flopped, and is ready to sit pretty for a treat.

I've found if I don't react to her tantrums, she gets bored with them REALLY fast. She gives me the "ahhhhh, Mom... you're no fun..." RIGHT-O! Then she'll sulk over to do as asked. I WIN!!!! Good Luck!! :)
