  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Anyone got pics of their bullmastiffs?

Two out of three of my BMs were dominant with other dogs, and one was downright intolerant of any nonsense with another dog. My last (pics, avatar) was very tolerant. We were surprised.

We have always used crates for all dogs, no matter what the breed, so we really don't know any other way. We always have the crate door open and even now with adults that don't need to be crated, ever, they will still go in there and lie down when they want to get away and relax.

We worked very hard to train ours not to pull on leash, but once when a dog was rushing at us from the yard we were walking past (chain link fence) my BM decided he was GOING to handle this and his choke chain broke with the force of him heading out. I sprained my shoulder and am lucky it was not dislocated. When they decide to do something, they will do it. You cannot force these dogs to do anything, from clipping toenails, washing out ears, going somewhere they don't want to go, etc. You must train them to trust you or you'll never get anywhere.

This is Major, my most recent one

Nice I'm deciding between a bullmastiff, presa, and a boerboel. A bullmastiff seems easier to have, so I may go for a bullmastiff. They have the guarding capability, strength, gentleness, that I'm looking for.

I can't stress enough to research the health of the lines and stick with breeders who show, and maintain the standard. Health problems are many in the breed. I hope more people post pics because I'm loving seeing all of them! In particular, the dogs running with the lips flying are just awesome!! (thanks for that one, Laura Lee!)

Junior has Ishana in his bloodlines.

This is his mom's pedigree.

GET OUT!! Your Junior's mom and my Gunner were littermates.

Gunner born 12/11/2007. Ishana's Moonlight Sonata x Newcastle's Love Struck Romeo.

Our 3.5 month old is Ishana’s Dancing in the Moonlight and TNT’s Ground Breaker.

Annie’s a pro. Two BOB winners at Westminster over the last three years. We’re lucky we live so close to her. She was over to our house just a few weeks ago and brought with her one of our puppy’s littermates. They fought like brothers often do. It was fun to watch.

hah! Small world. And great looking dogs to boot. I'll more than likely go back to these lines when the time comes to get another one.

Gorgeous girl. My apologies to primehns for hijacking the thread. I’ll be quiet now.

Anyway, back to your request for pictures...here's our puppy Dozer (Ishana's TNT Earthmover) when we brought him home at 8-weeks:

He's almost 16-weeks now. I need to snap a few more recent photos so you can get a sense of the growth progression.

No I'm not into the breeders who mainly show, well I am but, I'm sure show dogs don't regularly beat out breeders that are going for solid temperament, healthy, and genetic testing.

Show breeders are keeping the breed true to standard, and that includes excellent temperament, health and testing. I've been burned before, is the only reason I bring this up.

If you find a non-showing breeder who has amazing dogs, is a reputable breeder (there are many, many wonderful threads here outlining how to spot a reputable breeder) and cares about where the pups go, with excellent health testing and solid plan for their line, then go for it.

Definitely keep us posted on your journey, and post pics the instant you get a pup!!

Ahh thank you, that reall cleared up a lot of questions I had, yeah I will, making sure that I bring the dog into a proper environment though, raising some funds for his extra emergency kinda fund. Probably not getting a pup for a while gonna browse shelters.

Well I can only speak for Ishana, but Annie does both. Her reputation is on the line and if she produces dogs that are not healthy or up to breed standard, she wouldn't be in business long. When we purchased Gunner from her, she brought the dam to our house for two reasons. She wanted to see the environment she was putting her puppy into and we wanted to see the temperament of her dog. She takes a lot of pride in her dogs.

Yes. She loves the breed and does all she can to promote it. And she does a ton of research on potential studs when planning her next litter – not only conformation qualities, but health and temperament, as well.

As an aside, we were very lucky to get our Dozer from her eight weeks ago. Normally, all puppies in Annie's litters are spoken for well before they are even born. Our Gunner died when the litter was already three weeks old. The only reason we got Dozer is because Annie elected not to place him in the home of the applicant she was leaning toward. If I recall correctly, her reasoning was that something just didn't feel right about the situation, that it wouldn't be a good mix for either the puppy or the applicant family, so she declined. If she were in it only to make the money, she wouldn't have given that concern a second thought. That's a responsible and caring breeder.

My bullmastiffs. 11 year old Mabel (fawn) and 6 year old Ruby...great dogs! Mabel the 11 year old has always been dominant with other femalea, but is very soft and sweet with all people. Mine adore children. Truly great dogs!

I just got home from work, & I'm pretty wiped. I'll try to put my 4 cents in tomorrow, before I go back to the grind. BTW I'm putting 4 cents in because I live with 4 bullmastiffs. :)
