This may generate some discussion.

Geez. It was a dog being a dog. Mother Nature at work.

But to scream like a silly little girl when your big bully breed is just playing a game is stoopid. If he thought that was dinner, I'm sure he would have been ripping into the girls and not just the seal.

As was said above - Dad knew what to do. He should have made sure the daughter(s) knew too.

Not sure if dunking (not really drowning) the dog would have helped or not... a good "DROP" and "LEAVE IT" would have been much more effective.

Too bad for the seal. I wonder what he was doing that close to people in the first place.

By the way, I decided not to watch any of the video.

I learned to deal with this sort of thing as a child. Our family dog was very well behaved, but he established dominance over other dogs and was very protective. Normally, other dogs did not challenge him, but there were times when the fights would go too far. I learned to break them up.

Our dog also hunted small prey like rabbits, squirrels, etc. that part did not bother me.

When you have a powerful dog, and you go to public places, you must have control.

You should know your dog too. We used to have a beagle that loved to track animals. When he got on a trail, he fell into a trance and would not respond to anything else. I would have to actually grab him and I could see he was confused for a bit, like he awoke from a dream.

When it come right down to the facts, dogs are predatory animals. When there is noise and fighting when taking prey, it is like the sizzle we hear when cooking a steak.

Well said :)

Talking about control. When Jade was very young like 4 or 5 months I had her and the boys out in the woods. I saw Jade really sniffing a spot and went to look. It was Bear crap and Jade started following the trail of the bear. At first I though "oh how cute Jade is hunting bears." then I looked up the trail and saw the bear. I called to jade to leave it and come NOW! she obeyed and we all got in the SUV and left. If she was not trained to leave it or come on command I would have lost at least one dog. Control and training is paramount in dog ownership.

^^Reminds me of a story when I was a kid. We had 2 GSDs and a friend had a lab. My mom, myself and our friend took them all to a local state park to go hiking. Where we were there was a train track and a train came through. All the dogs started running toward the train, however we we caledl our GSDs back, but the lab just kept on running full steam toward the train. We thought he was a goner, but luckily he stopped. I won't ever forget that. Control is so important - you never know what is going to happen!

I agree training and control is extremely important, but Shit happens! Instinct ! Natural ! People need to remember that animals are animals not humans! And that from time to time a animal is going to be hurt or killed, it's just a natural event whether we are in 2013 AD or 13 AD
