Just saw an edited version of this on the news. Mark Kelly has to drag his daughter's dog off a sea lion pup. Poor pup.

Yeah, first off it's nutz that it's Mark Kelly. Were they too rough on the dog, not rough enough? Should they have drowned it as one onlooker suggested (obviously not a dog person, or just a sea lion lover)? Was her dog supposed to be under leash control on that beach?

I think it's sensationalistic media. Is it a pretty story? No. Was there a need for Giffords name to be mentioned? No...it was not her dog. I get really upset when the media exploits situations like this just to get headlines. Like I said, not a pretty story, but as someone who has been around and had animals in my life, it is somewhat understandable. We don't always understand why or what animals perceive as a threat. When I lived in Florida, my boxer would pull down opossums down off the fence at night at least once a week....and he wasn't pulling them down to make friends with them. He was a great dog, and he was not a danger to other people or dogs. But, how do I know what he thought the opossums were? I do know that he was protective, and that they were on "his" fence. Anyway, to cut it short, I think this was a "nature" thing, and all the media hysteria is going to accomplish is to give that breed of dog a "bad rap". My opinion.

I'm not sure I exactly agree with the drowning of the dog but that's just me. And I really don't even know who Mark Kelly is

I am pretty sure than any type of messing with a sea lion is illegal on the CA coast, so I am sure killing one is. That said, i don't blame the dog at all. Then the girls made it a game by playing tug of war.

He is an astronaut and husband of former Congresswoman Giffords, who was shot in the head a couple years ago. And, no, don't drown the dog, although he did clarify and say the dog would then let go and swim.

Ahh ok. I know I had heard the names before but didn't recognize them. I honestly don't think name dropping in this instance is at all important. And I would hope that if they attempted to drown the dog that he would let go & swim but then there's me who thinks, what if he doesn't.

I really don't care that it's Kelly either, it's just nutz that he's already in the news and then this happens.

At the point they say to drown the dog the pup is already done for (as one person mentioned), so there's really no reason to hurt the dog at that point. They may still hear from the fish and game people, or whoever's in charge of protecting wildlife.

ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS PICK THE DOG UP BY THE COLLAR OR BETTER WRAP THE LEASH AROUND THE NECK AND LIFT. THIS WILL CHOKE THE DOG TO MAKE HIM WANT TO DROP WHAT'S IN HIS MOUTH. Per Fact PPD folks do it to pull there dogs off decoys!!

His daughter and the other two were morons and the father who thought it was great to video is a dumbass! .. Sorry for calling them names but a fact is a fact.....

I think the father was the one who eventually came and pulled the dog off. I think the guy taping was just a random guy.

There are laws that dictate a person cannot approach a marine mammal due to the marine mammal protection act as it is seen as a sign of harassment. They are protected. It was and is an unfortunate event that this happened. I go to that stretch of beach often, usually on a Saturday, guess I missed this last one. The end of the article talks about how the pup was beached and could have been a sign of sickness. Honestly I'm at a loss, I love dogs and respect the marine mammals that occupy that beach. Seals, sea lions, dolphins and whales are often seen in those waters.

I don't think it was the owners fault or the dog's fault, legally they are allowed on the beach during this time of year. I just wish they did what Geisthexe suggested sooner to avoid all the drama and pain. The pup could have been saved if they could have pulled it from the dog's jaw sooner. There's a marine mammal rehabilitation center just up the road.

It kinda annoys me that they were slapping the dog in the face. Yes it is the first thought to do but really it just made the dog hold on tighter. As well as grabbing the pup by the tail and basically playing tug of war with an obviously "Bully" looking breed( I don't mean this as an insult just that Bully breeds tend not to back down when hit or tugging).

The dog obviously has a prey drive but other than leashing the dog this really was unavoidable.

Why did the dad take so long to step in?? He managed to get the dog off straight away, why watch while the girls obviously didn't have a clue!?! Maybe if he had the pup could've been saved, sad, very sad.

That went on way too long. Dogs do those types of things, personally, when you own a powerful animal you know that there is a chance for something to happen. I had a gorgeous amstaff that absolutely hated cats. He would catch them, crush them, and then walk around with it in it's mouth like it was a prize. It was something I learned about him real quick and that was why I kept one break stick. I knew he would not let go, so I would have to make him let go and the thing is the more high pitched noises that were made by anyone around, the more he hung on. I just would tell him to drop it, if he did not, then I would use the break stick, open his jaw and take the cat. That was it, we would be done. I feel sorry for the girls for having to deal with that.
